2001 BMW 740iL

While the Mercedes-Benz S class may be the standard bearer for German executive sedans, the BMW 7 series has always been the choice for the more sporting individual, even if the owner is spending most of his time in the back seat. In 2001, as the public learned of the radical design departure of the upcoming 2002 7 series, buyers started a rush to buy what would be the last of the conservatively styled 7 series sedans. It’s rare that a car nearing the end of the production cycle would see a spike in sales, but that’s exactly what happened in the case of the E38 7 series. This 740iL has the M sport package and has clocked just over 60,000 miles.

Thanks for looking! Dan

Considering the mileage, I’d say this car is priced just about right. Anything that reaches into the mid teens for an E38 is a big ask these days. Right around $12,000 to $13,000 seems to be about the ceiling for these cars currently. Sure, they aren’t cheap to run, but where can you get a car with this much space and luxury at this price point? Even the cheapest new cars in America start out at this level. Granted, you’ll be missing the warranty on this particular ride, but the bragging rights in the office car park will make up for it.

10K Friday: The ones everyone wanted! S8 v. 740i Sport v. 560 SEL

509

Two weeks ago I wrote up executive showdown which featured an A8L against a 745i and S500. The general consensus was that while most wanted the Audi, the Mercedes-Benz (though maybe not that particular one) was the better long-term purchase. Personally, I think Audis of this generation sometimes get an unwarranted reputation, but regardless few people really wanted any of these cars as almost all found some earlier generation more appealing. So, run the tape again, this time with the “Greatest Hits”! Let’s start with the Audi:

I can’t deny that I have a serious love affair with the S8. It just looks sooooooo right. This particular example looks splendid in the quite rare Irish Green Pearl and has the preferred look 18″ Avus wheels in good condition from the look of the photos. Interior also looks great, and mileage is low to average for the market. Timing belt service should have been performed so look for that to have been done, and also it appears there is front bumper damage (not uncommon on the low-slung S8), but at below $10,000, this car looks like the best bang for the buck in this group. Older Audis not your thing? How about a classicly styled BMW E38 740i Sport:

VERY NICE 740I M SERIES

509

Not much info, but this car looks splendid in classic black with equally classic M-Parallels. I love the look of these cars, they’re well proportioned and hide their weight cleverly. With around the same mileage of the Audi, this car is a little less complicated overall but consequently also offers less performance. But maybe performance isn’t your thing, and you’d like something a little more “classic” than the BMW? How about the dictator car of choice, a W126 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL?

This is a very clean 1990 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL sedan with 66890 miles. This Mercedes has been very well treated and maintained. This is a fully original Mercedes including the Becker stereo system. This 560 has front and rear seat heaters, and reclining rear seats, which are working properly.

We performed a road test as well as a safety and maintenance service on this vehicle in preparation for sale. The engine runs well and the automatic transmission shifts very nicely. All of the brake pads are in great shape as well. The oil and filters were just changed. I checked the equipment in this car for proper operation. I can verify that all of the following power equipment is working properly: All power windows, power door-locks, power seats, power sunroof, power mirror and antenna. The air conditioning and heat are working. All of the gauges and instrumentation are functioning properly. There aren’t any service or warning lights on.

The pearl grey paint is glossy and brilliant over the entire body. The exterior of this Mercedes is in very nice condition with only minor imperfections. There are some bumpers rub marks, a few bumps and some small scratches, but this car still looks really great. All of the trim is intact and in excellent condition, and the alloy wheels are clean, look great.

The interior has been very well maintained and is in terrific condition. All of the leather surfaces are soft and supple with very little wear, even on the driver side. The carpeting is clean and fluffy throughout this car. There aren’t any rips, holes or damage on the seats or carpeting in this Mercedes. The dash and door panels are in excellent condition without any cracks, fading or other damage. This was a non-smoker owned vehicle and there aren’t any smoke odors or burn marks inside this car.

The title is clear without any liens or encumbrances and is mileage are original. This is a beautiful 560 SEL in excellent condition. I would feel comfortable getting in and driving this Mercedes anywhere.

This Car has pass california smog inspection with no problem.

This 560 looks to be in great shape, and while it’s probably the least exciting of the three there is something that is evergreen about the Mercedes-Benz models from this time period. They still exude luxury and opulence even though many of the features are found on base model Kias now. Truth be told, these cars all are bathed in luxury, and although I’m partial to the Audi, I think all three of these cars are winners and offer their own version of classic German motoring with a healthy dose of luxury on a shoe-string budget.

Which would you prefer?

1998 BMW 740i

As far as German executive sedans go, the BMW E38 7 series is a favorite of many. Its successor, the E65, wasn’t as well received by enthusiasts. This was affirmed by the fact that E38 sales jumped right before the end of production, as folks clamored to get the last examples of this beloved sedan. Nowadays people still revere the E38 and despite its popularity, is a still rather affordable luxury sedan to procure. That is, if you are willing to endure the maintenance costs. This 740i for sale in Pennsylvania has a remarkably low 17,400 miles on the clock and represents the pinnacle of 1990s BMW style.

Gorgeous 1998 BMW 740i Sedan. Purchased car last fall from Volvo dealer in Florida as an addition to my collection. I believe car was a trade in from original owner. Car completely sorted out with new tires/ OEM M wheels, Radiator, Headliner, etc. Drives like new, Excellent condition. Even has an IPOD/IPHONE Adaptor! Pre purchase inspections welcome. I am reducing the number of cars in my collection and will sell the E38 if I get a fair price. Check my feedback and thanks for bidding!

The E38 is at that age where it’s not exactly a vintage BMW, but not quite new enough to be considered by your average used car buyer. Thus, you can snag an E38 for reasonable money these days, but be prepared for expensive repairs that might crop up. This car is certainly clean and the low mileage is a boon, but over $20,000 puts this far ahead of other E38s in similar condition, regardless of mileage.

2000 BMW 740iL Supercharged

This penultimate year of the E38 has almost all the refinements made over the seven year run. It has navigation and Xenon lights for instance. While this car isn’t the flagship 750iL model with the 5.4 liter V12, it has the tried and true 4.4 liter M62 engine. A Vortech supercharger bolted on gives the V8 400+ horsepower. While that might not seem huge in the world of German uber sedans now, remember how big a deal it was with this sedans contemporary, the E39 M5, putting out those same figures.

This is the personal car of the owner of the car dealership so you have to believe it was taken care of. If the list of add ons is any indication I think it is safe to say the owner cared about the car. The full list of upgrades is below, but of particular note are the additions that make this 7 series look better to my eye. The M parallel wheels and Eibach lowering springs give it the stance that I really like to see on an E38. The AC Schnitzer and Hamann body kit parts also help. The new coat of paint and black color on this helps give a sleeker look that other E38 models don’t have due to  all, but 2001s having matte black rocker panels and lower air dams. I like the single color scheme much better than the factory two tone.

They are technically complex, but not nearly as much as the next generation. This one miraculously doesn’t appear to suffer from the missing pixels on the instrument cluster or center console.

With over 350,000 produced these are not rare vehicles so currently there are plenty to choose from if this is what you are in the market for. At an ask price of $17,000 and with 136,000 miles this is certainly on the high end of the market. You can find these at half the price with less miles. I bet the seller has a bit of wiggle room in the price. What’s a fair price for this many miles, but also this many mods? Pick this car up and become an instant movie villain.

2001 BMW 740i Sport

The E38 740i Sport is a favorite of ours here at GCFSB. When the photos of the new E65 and long wheelbase E66 7 series emerged, sales of E38 7 series actually increased, as people viewed the radical new design too much of a departure from what they were used to. Now, the E38 is a luxury car bargain, provided you aren’t fearful of what it takes to maintain one. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a 740i Sport in Royal Red, but it certainly is a nice departure from the usual blacks, silvers and grays that we see on larger German sedans. The chrome wheels are a bit too Hollywood for my tastes, but everything else about this E38 is scratching that executive car itch of mine.

2001 BMW 740i with Dinan upgrades. California owned 2001 BMW 740i in rare Royal Red on black leather with 83k miles. Mint condition, fully loaded, floor mats, tape, CD/AM/FM, car cover, Xenon lights, jet washers, M Package, records, new front tires, brand new front and rear brakes and rotors, all hoses and belts brand new, new radiator and extra key. It has a gorgeous color combination or rare Royal Red with black interior and is in near mind condition. The top is like new. This car has a 4.4 liter V8 powerful motor that is very tight, fast and smooth. Don’t miss this chance to own this rare beauty with low miles. I have owned this car for the past three years, bought it from a friend of mine and the car has been always serviced on time. Always been garage kept and the car will come with car cover. VIN# WBAGG834001DN87461

It would have been nice if the seller described in further detail exactly what Dinan upgrades this car has. From the pictures, it’s apparent this car has a Dinan cold air intake, but I’m curious whether this car might have a chip upgrade or other modifications. The asking price for this 740i is a bit high considering other E38s we’ve seen lately. The Imola Red 740i Sport that Nate featured earlier this month sold for $15,001 and had 93,000 miles. I’d suspect somewhere around $14,000 to $15,000 is all of the money for this car. While the E38s are still revered amongst the Bimmer faithful, prices haven’t moved all that much to warrant a premium on anything except very low mileage, showroom new examples.

2001 BMW 740i M-Sport

I’ve mentioned before that I consider the E38 to be the unequivocal pinnacle of the 7-series. While new F02s certainly catch my eye (and for some weird reason just make me wish they were made as a wagon…), the 7-series has never been as sporty, elegant and Bavarian as the E38. In fact, has any BMW ever looked this complete? From various angles, it evokes the E31 8-series, the E39 5-series, or the E30 3-series. That’s essentially a litany of the most comprehensively excellent BMW designs ever made. As you might expect, the final production year of 2001 brought a swan song of styling and capability. Seriously, how many cars appreciate BEFORE they cease production? The E38 is in rare company here as people scrambled to buy it once they saw what was to come with the E65. Replete with options, the only thing this M-Sport is missing is the 6-speed manual. That’s a personal preference though, as there is little else to fault on this red on black executive beast.

You are looking at an exceptionally well kept, great looking sport V8 luxury automobile, one of the finest series that BMW makes. This car says a lot about its owner, and has been renowned in the world as a symbol of prestige and class, as well as having great performance. The vehicle has been made and assembled entirely in Germany and consists only of Germany made parts! It’s been very well kept and serviced; in fact it runs almost like a new car. It’s a very unique Imola RED (bright red) exterior combined with the black leather interior adds lot of luxury appeal to it. Judging from the miles and the condition of the car, it has been mostly used on the highway and it has also been garage kept.

There are no reported manufacturer’s defects on this vehicle. The engine is an exceptional V8(282hp, 315 lbs-ft) – one of the most powerful in the segment – runs strong and smooth provides the power you have come to expect from a BMW. The transmission has the BMW mark on it as well and shifts like on a new car, no skips or slips on shifts – actually it does it so smoothly that you can’t feel it shifting. The car runs great! The engine compartment is clean, and free of any leaks. All the electrical options appear to be in working order. This BMW is equipped with a dual-zone climate control system and the AC blows ice-cold. The passengers in the back can also control and direct airflow.

As you can judge for yourself from the pictures – the interior is clean. The seats are 18 way adjustable including lumbar support for both driver and passenger seats as well as bending of the back of the seat – you can actually bent the back to suit your sitting posture. This luxury sedan also sports 5 memory settings so that different drivers can feel comfortably in the same car or for different sitting positions according to the driving environment you face – relaxed for highway cruising, or more hands on for a bit of sport driving… Extra comfort comes from extensive lumbar support for the drivers and passengers seat. As well as a steering wheel that slides into your defined position after you sit in the car. The steering wheel has control buttons for most everything so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. Also has the auto dimming rear view mirror to cope with those who get in behind you and flash you with headlight – for a more relaxed evening – night driving experience.

The power locks, windows, seats and moon roof (and all the other electrical features) all work and are in excellent condition, and it is also one of the first models that came with projector lights, that are still missing from most modern cars. A First Aid kit can be found behind the passenger seats. Even the original BMW set of tools is intact, 14 speaker sound system. A fine PREMIUM surround system makes your music come alive, with fully adjustable settings. Store up to 20 FM/AM presets for the radio.

Comes with all season tires – some of the best tires you can get – on this auto have been rotated, balanced and as you can see, still have plenty of tread left. Not many of those V8 BMWs were made for the US, this is your chance to own a truly unique sport luxurious sedan painted in a RARE IMPOLA RED that stands out. It’s obviously been garage kept, and is in good condition.

This car truly reinvigorates my enthusiasm for the E38 7-series. One needs to only look at the horizontal lines on this car to see what makes it uniquely perfect. The fender lines smoothly integrate to the A-pillar and across the top of the car. The top horizontal crease runs cleanly from the headlights to the taillights with the door handles perfectly integrated. The black bump strip is amazingly consistent around the entire car. Every line on this car is complete, understandable, and deliberate. And thus, it’s an executive saloon that looks perfect in Imola Red.

$17,950 seems a bit high, regardless of how fantastic this car looks inside and out. I think really good E38s are around $12k with the best of the best getting to $15k, and both of those are well above KBB. If this were a 6-speed, I’d go to $16k on it because it’s just so right. For now, you make the choice, but think hard on what the best executive saloon ever is worth to you.

2001 BMW 740iL

The last years of the E38 BMW 7-series took the Big Bimmer to its pinnacle of grace and aggression. More intimidating than the E23 or 32 and, well… do we need to discuss the E65 or after? They look like hippopotomi to the E38’s panther. Today’s slick long-wheelbase looks perfect on M-parallels and mean in black on black. The 4.4l V8 and auto transmission have covered 67k miles, not bad for BMW’s millenial workhorse powertrain. Eleven years have been kind to the car but not its value, so this would be a very cost-effective way to be a badass.

1997 BMW 740i

As we’ve featured in the past, the turn of the century luxury sedans often offer a great value. Clean examples aren’t too hard to come by and the prices for clean ones are generally pennies on the dollar.  The most plentiful of these flagships is none other than BMWs 7 series. The 7 series has been at the top of the luxury segment for nearly 3 decades and has been the poster child for German luxury.

This clean low mileage 7 series for sale outside of Philadelphia has the potential to be a great classic luxury driver.

On July 27, 2001, the last E38 BMW 7 series rolled off the production line. Picking up the baton was a car that polarized the BMW faithful. The E65 7 series. People rushed to buy the last of the E38s before none could be had. These were magnificent vehicles, and towards the end, the M Sport package added a few tweaks that worked amazingly well on such a large sedan. This lower mileage E38 is a nice example of the last of the breed.

With only 60k miles, this is a decent price for a lot of car maintained to a respectable standard. I always enjoy perusing the BMW Car Club of America’s Classifieds because more often than not, the best examples of the breed come up for sale in such a venue. This E38 is no exception.

Along with the E39 BMW M5, the E38 740i is one of those über sedans that is on my radar for future purchase. Every time I return home to Philadelphia, I see a number of E38s, mostly in black, cruising up and down Bustleton Avenue through the Northeast section of the city, a predominately Russian neighborhood. Popular, then, both at home in Russia and abroad. It is still commonplace to see the E38 function as the vehicle of choice for heads of state, executives and wealthy individuals the world over. This particular 740i in upstate New York has the popular M parallel wheels and only 68,000 miles under it’s wings.

The asking price for this 740i is about in line with where current values on these models are headed. The color combination and mileage on this particular car are surely going to garner its fair share of interest. I can’t help but get weak in the knees every time I see one of these sedans. The crisp lines and stance, especially with the M parallel wheels, is just perfect. This, in my opinion, was the zenith of the 7 series. You can have the bloated and overly complex current range. I’ll take an E38, thank you.
