Wednesday Wheels: Underwater Basketweaving 101

Okay, okay, you’re right – last week we featured BBS wheels too. But let’s just say I have a thing for BBS wheels and I’m in the driver’s seat on this one, so I get to control the radio, okay? Seriously though, BBS wheels are some of our favorites at GCFSB when they’re specified as either OEM wheels, OEM upgrades or aftermarket options. Today we have a few different options for you and like last week, I tried to get one of each marque. Unlike last week, we’re going to focus on specifically the “basket weave” design that BBS popularized. Let’s start with one of the more under appreciated BBS wheels, the RA found on 1987-1992 Volkswagen Jetta GLis:

The refinish on these wheels sure looks great – I actually had a set of RAs that looked just like this, gold with a polished lip. They could be specified from BBS like that in the 1980s; these, however, have been made to look like that from the original all-silver (or super rare Helios Blue) that came on the stock GLis. I think they look great; gold was one of the most popular colors in the 1980s and these would dress up just about any 2002, 320i, E30, A1, A2, A3 or early Audi. The RAs and RMs are notoriously soft, so watch for potholes if you’re running skinny rubber. Have a mid-80s Mercedes or into the “stance” scene? How about the super popular 16×8 Mercedes-Benz spec BBS RSs:

The BBS RS crowd has taken on a life of it’s own, with clean and refinished examples sometimes demanding much more money than the cars they’re put on. I’ve seen ask prices exceed $3,000 for a set of 16″ BBS RSs, but if you look hard you can find pretty clean sets for under $1,000 without tires. This particular set has the benefit of coming with tires, so it’s a bolt on for you Benz folks, and I think they’d look great on a white SEC. Or, you could do what the “stance” crowd does and stick 3″ lips and 175-0-16s on them for that “this car isn’t capable of moving” look. Rather have something a little more modern on your Audi, late VW or Mercedes? How about these factory sport option Audi BBS RCs?:

Year: 2001

Full set of 5 OEM Audi 17″ Forked BBS alloy wheels. These wheels were recently removed from my Audi A6 and are a little dirty. Wheels are in good condition and have some moderate rash. See pictures for overall condition. Wheels include center caps, no center cap for spare wheel.

The BBS RC isn’t most classic basket weave, it’s a neat modern interpretation of the original. This is both a classy and sporty wheel, and one of the lightest 17″ options out of the box if you’re into performance. This set comes with a bonus wheel, but note that it seems to be hard to find these without some curb rash because the spokes are more exposed. The make a nice addition to any B5 or B5.5 Passat, Audi A4 or A6, or some Mercedes-Benz models. Rather have something a little more classically styled? How about some BMW BBS RC “Style 5″s:

The Style 5s are favorites of the BMW crowd to mount to anything buy the 528i they originally came on. Like the earlier RS, they offer great looks, reasonably light weight and the ability to personalize your car with some color. Many often mislabel these wheels as RSs, but in fact they are RCs though they look nothing like any of the other BBS RC models. Often pricing on non refinished sets is below $1,000, but this set has undergone a serious overhaul. If you’re not into redoing the wheels yourself, this might be a good option, as they’re fairly stock looking in comparison to how some redo them. Have a Porsche and looking for something? Well, it just so happens I found you something special:

Few people will ever get the chance to pick up one of these wheels, or a similar but smaller F1 wheel. If you do, it’s worth a laugh. Magnesium wheels seem to defy physics with their light weight – it just shouldn’t be that big and not weigh anything! If you want to roll with the big boys, this is how to do it. You’re not likely to have a 935, 936, 956 or 962, but if you did, these would be perfect for you. Like all magnesium wheels, you have to be careful refinishing them as they have a tendency to crack if mistreated, so best to have them X-rayed before hitting the track. If you like basket weaves, BBS started it off with just this type of racing wheel.

Two turbos and eight doors: 2004 VW GLi v. 2006 VW GLi

509

Like all Volkswagen models, Jettas seem to draw a very different crowd than the quite similar Golf, and generally that crowd (among enthusiasts anyways) has a bit of a reputation for being….different. Personally, my favorite GLis are the 2.0 16Vs with big bumpers, but Volkswagen has listened to what you wanted over the years, and with age has come more options, bigger bodies and more power. Still it seems that the Jetta falls squarely in the shadow of it’s badonkadonakless brother, the GTi. That belies what a good car the Jetta has become since the original A1; it’s remained the sophisticated and sporty option amongst small sedans while others have come and gone. Today I want to look at two GLi options that are very popular amongst the tuner crowds. Let’s start with a Mk. 4 2004 GLi:

509

Year: 2004
Model: Jetta GLi
Engine: 1.8 liter turbocharged inline-4
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Mileage: 103,000 mi
Price: $6,500 Buy It Now

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2004 Volkswagen Jetta GLi on eBay

2004 VW Jetta GLI, has 103k miles, 6sp. I drive the car daily so miles will go up slighty not much. Once car is sold I will stop driving it. I have a clean title in hand. There is a $250 NON-refundable deposit once offer is accepted. You have 48 hours to leave a deposit once offer is accepted. The rest of payment is in CASH when buyer picks the car up. You will have 7 days to pickup the car.

Runs and drives good everything works. No leaks of any kind. ABS light and ESP light is on. Trying to fix both light issues once I do I will update listing. There are a few spots were the headliner is sagging a little. Like new tires (tires installed Oct 2012), timing belt and water pump (installed last year), throw out bearing with slave cylinder installed last week. New front and rear rotors and brakes pads. Body is in good condition but does have a few marks and blemishes (I have pics of the areas).

Sold as is no warranty or returns. Please ask all questions before making an offer or buying. If you would like to take it for a test drive please email me. If you would like more pictures please email me an email address and ill send them.

I have to admit, I think the 20th Anniversary Edition GTis look a little more tasteful than the GLis with the body kits, but I’ve always loved the 18″ BBS RC option on these cars – they look fantastic. This car offers a pretty tidy package with plenty of speed out of the box, but the new owner can go nuts and modify it to pretty unbelievable levels if desired. I wouldn’t push it too much; the front driver VWs with transverse engines tend to be torque steerers that eat transmissions, suspension components and driveshafts as the power rises, but you could easily push this to 250 horsepower if desired and have a blast. If the Mk.4 is a little too fussy and unreliable for you, perhaps you’d like a little more refinement offered in the Mk.5 chassis, like this 2006:

509

Year: 2006
Model: Jetta GLi
Engine: 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-4
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Mileage: 90,645 mi

2006 V.W. Jetta GLI Turbo
“Only 90K”
Rare 6-Speed
Loaded Leather-Sunroof

This is a fantastic opportunty to own a well cared for 2006 V.W. Jetta GLI. The GLI is the top of the Line in the Jetta Series. This Jetta is incredibly clean, with Very Low Mileage. Every where you look this truck is near perfect. It appears to have always been very well maintained and cared for. This car is in very good condition. It appears to have been garaged it whole life.

The Exterior: is in very nice condition. The paint has great shine and depth with very very minor scratches or rock chips, visible only under close inspection.

This car is loaded Heated Leather Seats, Sunroof, Dual Climate Control,
17″ Factory Alloy Wheels,
Steering Wheel Controls, Xenon Headlights,
Side Airbags
This car is fun to drive and gets great gas mileage.
Car comes with clean Autocheck (No Accidents)
It also has the Factory Upgraded Alloy Wheels with Good Tires.

The Interior: is also in very very nice condition with very little wear,(really no wear) near perfect. It comes loaded with Heater Leather Power Seats, Power Sunroof, Upgraded Sound System.(the radio does show some wear on the preset buttons I have seen it on most of this model), The Seat show nearly no wear, and the foam is not broken down, even where you get in and out it is like new.

This Jetta runs and drives fantastic. It has great power and drives tight, and brakes straight and smooth. A real pleasure to drive. The pictures do not do this Jetta GLI justice, it is much better in person. This is Sporty well cared for V.W. Jetta GLI that is in beautiful condition and are very hard to find like this. That makes this a “DON’T MISS OPPORTUNITY!!

LET THE PICTURES DO THE TALKING

All inspections must be completed before bidding. All automobiles are sold as is. Items may be subject to documetation fees.

Change to the fifth generation Jetta resulted in a massive increase in quality, refinement, and sophistication for the Jetta, much as the jump from third to fourth had. The 2.0 turbo motor gained power, smoothness and torque over the earlier 1.8Ts behaving a little less like an on/off switch. Early units were noted for oil consumption, but the overall package is pretty slick. Looking at this car in comparison to the A2 Jetta, it’s hard to believe they’re priced pretty similarly. VW did ride quality a favor by swapping down to 17″ “Classics” wheels that are more pothole friendly though don’t look as spectacular; swapping them out for a set of OEM 18″ wheels is easily enough done, like the R32 spec Omanyt alloys that are a favorite of mine, on Ebay now:

Choosing between these two for me is difficult; I prefer the look of the earlier car slightly to the less fussy and rounder design of the Mk. 5, but at the same time it’s hard to argue with the refinement and general improvements in the later model. Mk. 4s can be pretty tough to live with by some reports, and I have not heard the same problem of the Mk. 5 to this point, though being a VW product, I’d expect the unexpected and presume that an engine light will be on in the not-too-distant future. Turbocharged fun, sporty handling, practicality, decent fuel economy, and low entry price make these great options for the daily grind.

Which one would you have?

1988 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V Trophy

Screen Shot 2013-08-27 at 9.19.46 PM

Today we bring you what is, hands down, the nicest MkII Jetta I’ve ever seen. And no, it does not have a twin-turbocharged 3.2l, all-wheel drive or slammed suspension. It is stock in a beautiful way, completely optioned-out as a GLI 16V with the Recaro Trophy interior. You’d be hard-pressed to find any signs that it’s covered even the conservative 90k miles put on over the past 25 years. For 21 years it was a babied weekender and it shows! If MkII Volkswagens are your thing, you should start looking at flights to Ohio.

You are looking at my 100% stock 1988 Volkswagen Jetta GLI with ONLY 90,571 miles. This GLI is in pristine condition inside and out. I am the 3rd owner of this time capsule, the second owner bought it in 1992 with 29,900 miles and kept in a garage for the next 21 years seldomly driving it only on the weekends (less then 3000 miles a year).

This GLI comes equipped with the following options:

-1.8L 16v motor (124hp)

-Manual transmission

-Sunroof

-TROPHY INTERIOR

-Power Recaro seats

-working A/C

-MFA trip computer

-4 wheel disc brakes

This GLI is in 100% original and in stock factory condition and has not been modified or molested in any way. It has all the original factory performance options, even the front air dams that collect air and cool the front calipers are still hooked up and ready for action! The exterior is very clean with no signs of bubbles or paint fading. The undersides of the doors are clean and the shock towers look like the day the came off the assembly line.

The TROPHY interior is in fantastic shape! The power driver and passenger Recaro seats are spotless. The drivers seat is supple and hugs your backside like a glove. There are no rips, tears, or significant signs of wear. The crank sunroof slides back with ease and will give you a great hairdo while your carving up the turns on your local back country road. The suspension feels tight and sure footed, 4-wheel disc brakes provide the stopping power for the 124hp 16v power plant and the clutch actuates where it should with no issues.

This GLI is a true throwback and a blast to drive!

This car is 25 years old and as such it is not brand new. Please expect normal issues of wear and tear consistent with the age of the car, but also keep in mind this is one of the nicest 1988 cars I’ve seen in my life. There are some very minor oil leaks and the car takes a minute or so to run really smoothly when cold.

Screen Shot 2013-08-27 at 9.18.17 PM

The factory tricked-out nature of this car (not to mention year) are reminiscent of the near-and-dear E28 M5. I love it and am extremely impressed at how beautifully the exterior and interior have been maintained. If this were an M5, it might be pushing $30k, but it’s not – it’s a Volkswagen. Bidding is very active but the price is still low. The GLI may forever be overshadowed by its little brother, but I’ve always loved it. Special, low-mileage, and well cared for, if its price stays within four digits I think it’s an awesome buy.

1991 Jetta GLI w/ TT 3.2L swap

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 2.36.55 PM

Mk1 and Mk2 Jettas are sharp cars, and the ease of finding and modifying them makes them a great proposition for motivated German enthusiasts. I’ll get it out of the way early that air suspension and a vastly upgraded engine seem like contradictions to me, but today’s GLI has been done well and thoroughly with an eye towards the VeeDub show scene. Highlighting the parts-bin accessibility of VAG, this Jetta has a TT heart, Golf Rallye headlights, G60 flares and Mk3 suspension and brakes. A conventional suspension would raise the desirability factor for me, along with a lower price. The seller has totalled up all of his receipts to price the car, which we know is a common mistake with modifiers.

Reason for selling: Moving on

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 2.37.01 PM

The seller is going to have to be generous with people clicking “Make an Offer” before it actually gets sold, as I see his price as at least 25% too high. I’m sure the TT engine, suspension, work, etc. all cost a pretty penny, and the car appears to be very nice, but no one is going to buy a Mk2 VW Jetta for $22.5k. If he adds up the parts and they really are worth that much, then maybe he should consider disassembly. In reality, he should accept a lower price and pass this nice VW project on to the next enthusiast.

1990 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V

A dying breed, an unmolested pre-93 Volkswagen is a rare find. An unmolested 16v GLI is even rarer. A favorite of VW enthusaists, the 16v GLIs and GTIs are the top level of performance offered in the MK2 (at least in the US). The 1990 model sported the 134 bhp 2.0 16v (it was 1.8L on earlier GLIs) mated to a quick ratio 5 speed gearbox making these cars are a blast to drive. The GLI also offered Recaro sport seats, BBS RA alloys and a GLI trim package that differentiated it from your every day GLI.

This clean Alpine white GLI for sale in Columbus, OH looks like a nice clean slate for a driver, modified car, or a collector piece.

I’ve always been fan of the GLI 16v ever since a highschool buddy of mine rolled up to track practice in one. It was quick and sounded the business when he masheded the gas. While the seller doesn’t offer a whole lot of detail on the car, it’s hard to go wrong with a $1000 price tag. If I had the space, this is yet another car I’d add to the corral.

1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Finished in Helios Blue

1989 was my last summer working as a lot boy (official job title) on my uncle’s Volkswagen lot.  It was a great summer that comes with being 17 but also because of the great cars that VW was rolling out.  The G60 Corrado was just hitting showroom floors and a “special” GLI finished in Helios Blue was introduced as well.

What is a Helios exactly?  The term is used in the VW community with a great deal of awe and deference.  It is a 1,500 car run of GLI’s finished in a color somewhere between a blue and purple depending on the light.  The interior also carries the look and is one of the more unique you will find.

There are not many of these cars left, so when I see a clean one I have to give props.

car does NOT have power windows anymore. regulators are all there as well as wiring behind the center console. i put it all back in. the only thing you would need is the power window center console power window door panels and switches. and regulators.
car has manual door cards from the 89 carat which is the same color as the helios interor.
also the power steering and a/c has been removed.
car has a brand new alternator, wheel bearings, head gasket, tie rod ends and ball joints, new plug wires, plugs
this car is an awesome car and i would not hesitate driving it across the country.
i have placed 2nd at one of the 2 shows i entered it in.
i constantly get compliments in this car everywhere i go.
anyways heres the pics. if you have any more questions let me know.

i am asking $4,000 firm.”

In looking at the pictures it is hard to see 200k miles on there.  If well cared for these cars wear pretty well but that can be a pretty big “if”.  Not sure about the lack of power steering or the ride height, I would prefer to get as close to stock as possible if it were me.  But, it’s not like there are a lot of other Helios cars to choose from.

$4k does not seem out of line, that is not a great deal of money for a daily that you could show on the weekends.

~Aaron.
