My Kinda Porsche: 1979 930 Turbo

It’s taken me a while to really get into Porsches. I know that’s weird, especially for someone with an overall massive penchant for all Teutonic autos, but it just took me a while. Maybe it was my preference for the boxy shapes of 80s VWs, BMWs, and Audis, or perhaps it was the general association of the 911 as the go-to cliche sports car. Whatever the sickness was, I’ve been cured. I think the 964 cured me, and now I’m developing a healthy desire for nearly all generations. Still, the ubiquity of the Ultimate Sports Car can make it easy to zone out when perusing eBay’s Porsche section. Today’s cream-colored 930 Turbo jumped off the page at me, hitting all the right Porsche buttons for me.

Engine and Transmission
You turn the key and the vehicle comes to life almost immediately, give it a little gas feel the new clutch engage and the new re-built motor purr with no problems at all. Throughout all the gears this vehicle exhibits absolutely no problems, plenty of power and the race inspired brakes will not disappoint you either. This is a driving experience you will not forget. This is a fast car.

Misc.
Sacrifice – $60,000.00 plus has been invested in this vehicle. If you are looking for a good looking, great running, no issues fun car, this is it.

Fat fenders. Whale tail. Turbo lag. German car in white on black Fuchs. I’m sold. Bids starting at $20k with reserve on. If this is truly a hassle-free 3.3 Turbo, I think it can easily double that starting bid. With early 911 iterations a little too classic, and anything past the 964 a little too modern, the 930 strikes the happy medium for me with classic shape, scary speed, and the kind of dirty aggression that could only arise from the late 70s.

1987 Porsche 959

The Porsche 959 was one of the most legendary vehicles from the 1980s, if not the past century. Born out of the homologation rules of Group B rallying, the 959 enjoyed a four year production run and paved the way for future all wheel drive 911 models. The 959 was also steeped in controversy, as many folks tried, unsuccessfully to import them to the U.S., including Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Canepa Design eventually developed a modification package that included a reworked turbo, engine management system and exhaust, allowing the 959 to be road legal.

There is no telling whether this particular 959 is one of those U.S. legal examples, but these come up for sale too seldom, making it worth the feature.

The seller states:

1987 Porsche 959 supercar.

This is a rare one owner collectible, imported directly from Germany 1988 and kept in a private collection till now.

All service up to 5600 miles done by Stuttgurt Porsche factory, and it has only 7,800 miles. The paint still looks new and the interior is like a new car condition, a beatiful black leather.

This car comes with all books and tools from factory. Once it was over $1 million and it could go back sometime ……..it certainly a rare jewelry for a real Porsche enthusiast to own.

In total, there were 337 959s ever built, and prices reflect their rarity, accordingly. They are still relatively young in terms of a classic car and values seem to be all over the map. Originally costing $225,000 when new, Bonhams sold one for $204,000 back in 2004, and reports have it that Jerry Seinfeld had bought one for $700,000. The asking price of $375,000 seems to be right around the midpoint of the few I spotted for sale online recently.

1986 Porsche 928

We haven’t featured a good, clean 928 in a while, so here you go. I have to admit, I was a bigger fan of the later 928s with their smoother styling, but with a 5 speed manual and a classy color combination, this earlier 928 is rather attractive to me. Incidentally, this 928 features the later 5.0 liter V8, debuting in 1985.

928s usually seem to fall into two categories, either pristine or ones that are clapped out. This example obviously falls into the former category. After witnessing a colleague go through hell who bought a 928 that was run hard and put up wet, well, you don’t want to take a chance on cars with a questionable history and certainly not when it’s one of these.

1993 Porsche 968 Cabriolet

With everyone pouring over ridiculous Cayennes and Panameras these days (yeah, I just went there), we all forget about the simpler times at Porsche. This was a lineup filled with 911s and magnificently balanced front engined GTs. Here’s a really clean, two owner 968 cabriolet. And thankfully, it has three pedals.

The seller states:

Very nice 2 owner car. Only 60K miles, 6 speed, new clutch, Service are up to date, power top in excellent condition, Silver blue with gray leather and blue top.CD , Cold AC, climate control, Runs and drives excellent. Clean title, no dings and dents, carfax certified. Non smoker. Good tires. Good brakes.

I could think of a lot worse ways to spend $14,900. This car got me thinking that I could have had a Porsche for the price of my Cooper S. Granted, my Cooper S is newer and has less miles. Nevertheless, with 60,000 miles and a robust 3.0 liter four, this Porsche would be a solid investment and a lot of fun for someone in a more temperate climate. They are one of those early to mid 90s German classics that are becoming a rare sight on the roads today.

1992 Porsche America Roadster

Phillip dropped us a note to let us know about his very unique Porsche 964 America Roadster. Check it out:

The 964 Wikipedia page states:

A turbo bodied cabriolet version was released in 1992. This had the standard electric spoiler and turbo guards. Mechanically it was the same as the standard model apart from 17″ cup wheels and the brakes and suspension which were ‘Turbo’ specification. Only 250 of this variant were produced in total during the 1992 and 1993 model years.

First owner was a wealthy Western Canadian Businessman, now retired, who had taken triple A ball into Calgary and at one time had a lease on the saddledome. He traded the car in on new Porsche turbo and the dealership wholesaled it out – purchased by a Canadian broker who deals in air cooled, limited editions Porsche – good reputation.

Second owner who I bought the car from; Canadian retired Banker from Japan. He is a Classic Porsche enthusiast and very knowledgeable about Porsche. According to him the Porsche has always been garaged/kept warm, never seen snow, virtually not seen rain.

Original owner confirmed it was factory ordered, custom matching interior including back seats (found in many euro cars, but very unusual in American cars, which usually have cheaper rear seat delete.
Original owner reports post ordering and upon its arrival he agreed to allow Porsche North America to use the car on the auto show circuit.

Interior/Exterior:
-Side panels, doors, turbo flares excellent. There are no dings/door marks/scratches. Same goes for door sills.
-Bumpers excellent (both resprayed last year for stone chips-front, scratches-rear)
-Hood / rear deck excellent. Overall excellent except for 2 small stone chips under front headlight which I inherited with car. The paint is in overall excellent condition
-Interior carpet is good to excellent.

1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster

I’m a sucker for cars that have an interesting color combination or rare collection of options. Porsche had some unique colors back in the late 1980s and 1990s, partly due to the fact that Harm Laagay returned to Porsche from BMW in 1989, after completing the Z1 project. This 911 America Roadster was a limited run model with 250 produced. It has the cabriolet body with the 911 Turbo’s flared rear fenders. The car also adopted the brakes and suspension from the 911 Turbo but retains the Carerra’s 247 horsepower engine.

The seller states:

The buy it now price of $39,500 is a tad higher than Kelley Blue Book’s appraisal, but about right for what NADA is quoting. The color may not be to some folks’ taste, but the car is well documented and in good condition, along with having a reasonable amount of mileage for the year. The Porsche 911 is renowned for it’s strong resale value in comparison to other Porsches. Even though 964 models aren’t the most valued, the rarity of the America Roadster is surely to add to this car’s lure in the future.

1987 930 Turbo w/ 2002 993 Body & 2006 engine

An interesting combo here that looks pretty good. The price isn’t cheap, but this machine clearly was built up to a fine standard.

A Protomotive tuned 2006 twin turbo 3.8 is dropped into the 1987 930 chassis and then draped in a 993 look widebody kit.

The seller is claiming 850 horsepower and 0-60 in under 3 seconds with a 210 MPH top speed. I’m sure this thing is fast, but I don’t know about 200 MPH fast.

The transmission has thankfully been uprated to handle the power.

Monster 19″x 14″ rear wheels with  355/20/19 rubber fill out the wheel arches.

$75,000 ask price. Despite all the work that has gone into this car I suspect that this price won’t be reached, you Porsche guys might have a better sense on the value of such a “hybrid.” Questionable vanity license plate not included.

1976 Porsche 911 3.0 Carrera Euro spec

Somewhat unique Porsche here, a Euro 911 3.0 liter Carrera. The average car fan won’t distinguish this from other similar era 911 vehichles, but the Porscheophile will take note of the Euro bumpers and the Carrera 3.0 badge on the trunk. Car comes with Bosch CIS fuel injection and a limited slip diff for better drivability.

101,000 miles show this car was enjoyed. The previous owner was a Porsche mechanic. The seller lists a ton of replaced and rebuilt parts and judging from the fact the photos are taken in a Porsche junkyard I bet I know where many of those parts came from.

This is a nice looking ride with the polished Fuchs alloys setting off the red paint. The $35,000 ask price is probably playing up the rarity of this car a bit much, but hopefully there is some wiggle room in there from the seller.

1991 Porsche 911 Turbo

Another week, another 964 series 911 Turbo, it seems. 1990 saw the introduction of the 964, and one year later, the Turbo bowed with a 3.3 liter engine producing 315 horsepower. The 964 Turbo models are, much like the rest of the 964 range, steadily increasing in value and gaining the attention of collectors. Here’s a fairly clean, early example with late model Porsche wheels.

The seller states:

Here is a sweet 1991 Turbo 911. This rare car is in great shape inside, outside, and mechanically. It has Turquoise Metallic (59) paint and a grey interior. Body and paint are in great shape with the usual paint chips around the wheel flares. The engine number is 61M00854 and transmission number is 2M00855. I have the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity for this car. It is fast and drives like it should, like a race car.

The thing that stands out in the ad is the fact that the car comes with Porsche’s Certificate of Authenticity, important to any collector. The reserve isn’t met at $25,000, but it would be safe to say this car would make it well into the $30k range if an interested buyer exists. Besides the 911 3.2 from the 1980s, I have to say the 964 is perhaps my favorite 911 of them all.

1989 Porsche 911 Speedster

From 1984 through 1989, Porsche manufactured what was, to many, the pinnacle of the 911 production run, the 3.2 In January 1989, production of the low volume Speedster commenced, ending six short months later with a total of just over 2,000 produced. Featuring a low slung windshield and hard tonneau cover, the Speedster was meant to evoke the 356 models of yore. Here is a widebody example with exceptionally low mileage.

The seller states:

This the rarest of the rare: A black wide body Carrera Speedster. It is very low mileage at 17,572. The paint is all original. This is a lightweight no A/C car. This car is untouched other than oil changes. This is powered by the super reliable Carrera 3.2 Motronic engine. It has its original 5 speed G50 gearbox shifting smoothly and flawlessly. Other than a lightly scraped wheel, the car is cosmetically beautiful.

$65,000 is about average for what clean, low mileage Speedsters are going for these days. I’ve seen some as high as $100,000, some as low as $40,000. With Targa, Coupe and Cabriolet prices holding steady, it’s no surprise that the rarest version of them all commands such respect in the marketplace.
