2015 Porsche Macan Turbo

Anyone who reads GCFSB knows that your managing editor isn’t too keen on SUVs. After being driven around in a Range Rover Sport yesterday morning, I was impressed. Not impressed as something to drive but rather to be driven in. Occasionally, an SUV will come along that forces me to take a second look, like the Porsche Macan. Based on the Audi Q5, this is Porsche’s smallest SUV. The top model is the one you see here, the Macan Turbo, with a 3.6 liter, turbocharged V6 pumping out 395 horsepower. Mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, this SUV can launch to 60 mph in well under 5 seconds. One curious side note about the Macan is that it is the first Porsche to be offered with a four cylinder engine since the 968, as a base Macan has been released for the UK and Japanese markets with a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-4.

Beyond the performance, the looks are rather handsome. The rear three-quarter view is especially attractive to me, with tail lights that could almost be described as an update of those which adorned the 928S4, GT and GTS. For me, this is a much more attractive looking machine than the oft-maligned four-door in the lineup, the Panamera.

1986 Porsche 930 Coupe

I remarked in an earlier post on the 993TT that the 930, especially the early 3.0 liter examples, remains my favorite of the 911 Turbos. As pretty as the 993 design might be, there is a way in which that beauty goes against the audacity of the 911 Turbo itself. It lacks some of the aggression of the original and for that the original will always remain my favorite. To be fair, there is likely a large degree of nostalgia at work here as the 930 was the Turbo of my childhood and as such will always have a stronger hold on my psyche than other models. So when I came across this one, a Meteor Metallic 1986 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in New Jersey, I figured I had to feature it. 1986 was the first year the 930 returned to the US market and for that we can all be thankful. This particular example shows very reasonable mileage at 50,489 and has a fantastic Burgundy leather interior.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S – REVISIT

$_57

The Aventurine Green Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S we featured in early January is still looking for a new owner and is back up for auction. Pricing remains more or less the same, though the seller has now provided some leeway by making it a No Reserve Auction with a starting bid of $72,500, while keeping the Buy It Now price at $75,000. I can’t help but think that the lack of quality pictures is holding this car back a bit, but at the moment the ad remains unchanged.

1993 Mercedes Benz 500E

For all my talk of fandom concerning older Mercedes models, there aren’t many that I would actually pony up the dough for. Sure I appreciate the W123 for the road warrior that it is and I’ve often day dreamed about enjoying a summer cruise in a Blue over White Leather W124 convertible but neither would satisfy my craving for speed and handling capability. My love of technical canyon roads and aggressive cornering is probably why I’ve always been more attracted to BMW than Mercedes and my fiscal responsibility is probably why I ended up in the middle with Audi. As much as I love brute power, I’ve grown fond of driving a slow car fast rather than a fast car slow up in the twisties. Bottom line is you can only do so many 80-140 mph pulls before the experience becomes boring or you get yourself locked up for reckless driving. But if ever there was a Mercedes that would pull me away from Quattro and Efficient Dynamics and manual transmissions, it would be the 500E.

To me, the rarity of this car is one of the most attractive things about it, only 1,528 were imported to the U.S. during its run. Equally as attractive is its ultimate Q-Ship status, as far as I’m concerned it is the finest example of a factory produced sleeper. Of course that makes sense given that the car was hand built by two of the world’s most respected automakers. Today it’s hard to fathom Mercedes collaborating with Porsche but back in the early 90’s it made a great deal of sense. Mercedes wanted a car to beat the M5 and V8 Quattro, Porsche wanted to show their engineered prowess could be applied to a four door sedan. Yes, I’m drastically over simplifying the whole project but there are those far more knowledgeable on the subject than I who’ve written about the car at great length. I am more than comfortable saying that this example appears to be an absolute peach.

1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

Jeremy Clarkson was fond of saying that sticking a Turbo badge on a car made it better. Didn’t matter the car, if it said Turbo it was good! In this way, the 911 market agrees completely with Jeremy. An air-cooled 911 Turbo is a highly sought after commodity in any guise, and for good reason. Enhanced performance trumps almost anything but the rarest of the naturally-aspirated models and given that a Turbo had a higher cost of entry to begin with we can understand why the market for them has remained so strong. As the last of the breed the 993 Turbo has held a special place in the heart of most Porschephiles, even if its all-wheel drive system dims the ferocity and purity of its dynamics to some degree. But the fact that it is the most advanced air-cooled model and, arguably, the prettiest of all the 911 Turbos lends it credence any debate and it is sure to maintain a high place within the 911 market for many years to come. The example we see here is a Guards Red 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Texas, with Tan interior and only 8,646 miles on it.
