2002 Mercedes Benz SL500 Convertible

It’s hot down here in Los Angeles right now, like middle of summer hot and that means a whole lot of cars hitting the road with the top down. There are a number of cars that I associate with LA whose roof’s have been liberated, the Lamborghini Gallardo, Maserati Gran Turismo, Hertz Mustang/Camaro just to name a few. However none of them embody the vibe of the City Of Angels like the Mercedes Benz SL500 convertible does. From a group of gal pals cruising down Sunset Blvd to the media mogul retiree racing to the golf course, this car oozes Los Angeles cool.

The R129 chassis lived a good long life, the object of desire for dentists, producers, athletes and children like myself from 1989 until 2002. Just think about that for a second, this car remained popular and relatively visually unchanged from Bush I to Bush II, that’s damn impressive. Here we have a very clean example with just over 86k on the clock that’s currently located in a place much like Los Angeles, just with humidity and crazier people, you know, Florida.

Tuner Tuesday: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SL RENNtech 6.0 “SLammer”

Since their launch, the R129 Mercedes-Benz SLs have held my attention. Perhaps it’s because I was heading towards driving age when I first got to sit in a then-new 500SL, but regardless of the motivation I really wanted one. My father used to take me to the local Mercedes-Benz dealership in his W113, so even though I was a child who grew up in the 1980s I was never particularly partial to the R107 – and I’m still not. Early Euro-spec cars look nice to me, but for the most part they look a bit too soft and large. So the R129 was a revelation – it looked substantially more sporty and was thanks to a new 5.0 V8 good for 320 horsepower mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. But for some well-heeled enthusiasts, the $100,000 price tag (in 1993!) wasn’t enough. AMG was in a state of flux in the early 1990s, but there was a new kid in town that was grabbing some serious headlines – RENNtech:

Shift It Yourself SL: 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SL vs. 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

The R129 Mercedes-Benz SL was a car met with much anticipation at the end of the 1980s, as the existing R107 SL had been in production since the early 1970s. Few models have had such longevity in the Mercedes product range. In a departure from prior models, both a six-cylinder (300SL) and V8 (500SL) would be offered in the new model. Customers could even opt for a 5-speed manual in the US market with the 300SL, but takers were few, making the early R129s with three pedals quite the rarity. The R107 was available with a six-cylinder engine all along in other markets, culminating with the similarly badged 300SL in 1986 that would cease production along with the rest of the range after the 1989 model year. These two 300SLs here represent possibly the best of the best when it comes to the six-cylinder/manual transmission combo in SLs of yore. We’ll start with this 1988 300SL for sale in northern Germany with a remarkably low 27,000 miles on the clock.

1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 40th Anniversary

While values rise on the R107 Mercedes-Benz SLs, their successor, the R129, has stayed rather stagnant in the market. This isn’t all too surprising, as it is still riding borderline classic status. But as the years press on and the styling cues continue to evolve, the R129 will certainly establish its place as a desirable classic. This 1997 SL500 is one of the rare 40th Anniversary Editions, which featured six spoke Evo II alloy wheels, Crimson Metallic exterior over parchment leather and chestnut wood trim. With just under 40,000 miles on the clock, this is a good way to stand out from the rest of the R129 crowd.

Tuner Tuesday: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL AMG 6.0

If earlier’s 500E AMG 6.0 got your blood boiling but is disappointing because it’s out of reach, have no fear! The 500E, after all, shared many components with the R129 500SL – so it’s no surprise that AMG had its hand in the convertible as well. While 1992 would see the launch of the more official SL60 AMG, there was also a 1991 version. The 1991 was nearly identical but retained the 500SL moniker; underneath, that M119 6.0 was the same and was more than enough to motivate the SL to near supercar levels. However, what’s really spectacular for enthusiasts is that for the loss of two doors and the Porsche connection, you can put the top down and save a bit of money; this 6.0 equipped SL is on the market now for less than half the asking price of the 500E:
