1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 40th Anniversary Edition

German Cars For Sale Blog turns seven years old this week. Thanks to all our fans who have made this website possible over the years! To kick off our anniversary week a little bit early, we’ll take a look at this 40th Anniversary Edition SL500 for sale in California. The R129 SL is in a sweet spot for collectors right now, with R107 prices trending upwards and the R230 SL being a bit too new to be considered a classic. There were a number of special edition R129s over the years, but this edition with its Evo wheels and Designo paintwork is rather stunning. With just over 14,000 miles on the odometer, this is one for the serious collector.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL

The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL is one of those cars that will always capture my imagination. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve lusted after one of these roadsters. Some friends of mine never liked these SLs but others loved them. Whatever your thoughts might be, these cars certainly made their fair share of appearances in television and movies over the past several decades, amplifying their star power. They also had one of the longest production runs in Mercedes-Benz history, giving prospective buyers lots of choice when it comes to specific years and models. This 380SL for sale in Portland, Oregon represents the end of the 380SL run, right before the introduction of the 560SL, the final version we would see in the US market.

2008 Porsche Boxster S

I’m not sure if there is a more under appreciated and oft maligned sports car than the Porsche Boxster. I was quite fond of the original generation, even had a 1:18 scale Maisto model of the original concept version that would become the 986. I think what drew me to the car was the obvious design nod to the Porsche 550 Spyder, which is art on wheels as far as I’m concerned. The majority of people would say the Boxster is just the opposite. They still look at it as the poor man’s Porsche or the divorcee mobile or the car you get bait & switched into by a shady dealership when by some divine miracle, you make a hole in one at the tournament with a WIN A PORSCHE gimmick. Look it up, that kind of thing has totally happened.

I actually think that’s a good thing because it leaves plenty of these cars out there for those of us who know better than to be swayed by public opinion. The Boxster isn’t without its faults but that can be said of all Porsches right up to the very tip top models that like to catch on fire just for the hell of it. The Boxster is a great choice of vehicle for anyone who just loves to drive.  First one I got to pilot was a 2013 base model with the excellent 6spd manual transmission, top down on the freeway in the middle of December on a cloudy day in Los Angeles. I remember everything about that experience vividly and I think that’s a true testament to just how good of a machine these are.

Convertible Week: 2002 BMW Z8

Debuting at the end of the 1990s, the BMW Z8 arrived during a time when carmakers were exploring the retro styling theme, such as Volkswagen with their New Beetle and Ford with their revived Thunderbird. The Z8 was meant to harken back to the 1950s during the heyday of the 507, a limited production V8 roadster that made an impact with its dramatic styling. Fast forward to 1999 and the Z8 arrived with a V8, this time shared with the E39 M5. The engine was placed aft of the front axle for optimum weight distribution. One innovation the car employed was neon lighting for its tail lamps and turn signals. This was perhaps an answer to what modern day LED lighting can offer. Most Z8s you come across are silver, but this Topaz Blue over red leather example is a real eye-catching combination.
