I ran into yet another snowstorm driving from Philadelphia to Washington, DC this past Sunday. Anyone else tired of this winter? I thought so. For those in warmer climates, feel fortunate. Not only because you don’t have to deal with the white stuff, but because you can enjoy awesome machinery like this S54 engined M Roadster year round. For those not familiar, BMW switched to the more powerful inline-6 in 2001, giving this little two-seater a 75 horsepower shot in the arm, bringing it closer to the European variant that first came equipped with the S50 engine, instead of the lower horsepower S52 version that we got stateside. These S54 engined E36/8 coupes and roadsters are quite rare, making this one for sale in Maryland in an uncommon hue of Laguna Seca Blue even more attractive.

The 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL we featured last week did not sell, but the seller has since discounted the price by $4,000. If the SL roadsters that preceded it are any guide, we might be looking at a point where you can get in an R107 at close to the ground floor.

4 CommentsWhen it comes to open-top motoring, it can be very difficult to beat a vintage sports car. Driving any convertible already brings you closer to the pure feel of driving: the wind, the noise, the immediacy of everything around you. When a vintage car is your chosen vehicle for such an excursion then that sense of immediacy becomes all the more palpable. Porsche’s paradigmatic expression of such a car came in the guise of the 356 Speedster, which remains one of the most valuable and coveted of the marque’s many cars. Production of the Speedster ceased in 1958, to be replaced by the Convertible D model and eventually the 356 Roadster. While mechanically similar to the Speedster, the Roadster featured wind-up windows, a slightly taller windscreen, and cushier bucket seats. Basically, a more comfortable version of the Speedster. Still, the essence of the car was retained and these remain highly sought after versions of the 356. The example featured here is a Silver 1961 Porsche 356B Roadster with Red interior located in Texas.

Comments closedThe 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL we featured last month is back up for auction. Long forgotten amidst other, more popular SL models, this roadster has finally started to see an uptick in values, with good ones reaching into solid six figure territory. Will this one meet its reserve this time around?

Comments closedThe problem with classic cars at times is they aren’t that agreeable to live with on a regular basis. Whether its adjusting carburetors, leaky convertible tops or dealing with less than adequate braking capabilities, there’s always going to be a bit of compromise. Of all the classics, however, older Mercedes-Benzes are some of the best that can blend in with modern motoring. Timeless looks with safety and performance to keep up with modern times makes cars like this 450SL from the mid 1970s an attractive piece. This one for sale in Florida has just under 60,000 miles and wears it’s original paint over a restored interior.
