2001 Audi RS4

A fair chunk of the collector world shrugs their shoulders when an Audi rolls by. There are some exceptions, obviously; the Quattro and Sport Quattro have gained notoriety, and of course because it was touched by Stuttgart, the RS2 still has some serious street cred.

Pull up in this RS4, though, and most would have a tough time telling it apart from the 1.8T with vape clouds billowing from the windows. Their dismissal would be unfortunate, because the B5 RS4 is a serious machine. Quattro GmbH turned to corporate partner Cosworth Engineering to modify the 2.7 liter V6 twin-turbo, and the result was pretty astonishing for 2000: 375 horsepower in a manual wagon! Audi’s skunkwork quattro GmbH then gave the car a fitting set of modifications, from a unique interior with Recaro seats to wider track and flares – and, of course, the gaping guppy lower grills. Produced in low numbers, it’s even more rare to see in the United States since none were imported here originally.

Yet a few individuals have gone through the effort of Federalizing their RS4, and when they come up for sale it’s cause for a celebration!

2001 Audi S4 Avant

I’ve noticed an interesting trend over the past few months – vehicles shipped to a Latin American country and then restored. Perhaps this points to a larger issue in the US – specialized work on cars has become very expensive, and far fewer shops are undertaking projects for “average” enthusiasts. Today’s car, a US-spec S4 Avant, is claimed to have been shipped to Puerto Rico and restored. It sure looks good from what is shown, and it has a lot of modifications that should make it seriously quick. Is it worth a roll of the dice?

2007 Audi RS4 Avant

So close, and yet so far…

Just last month I took a look at a Sprint Blue RS4 sedan. The RS4 really is the perfect balance of a great motor, a great-looking package, good handling, and just enough tech – the sweet spot in used German sedans. Of course, they also offered it as a cabriolet here and an Avant abroad; though the fast five-door was never imported to the US. However, our friends in the great white north have more lax laws on importation; consequently, this 15-year-old example is now for sale up in Quebec. And boy, does it look great!
