2006 Audi A3 3.2 quattro S-Line

I have several times bemoaned the fact that, until recently, Volkswagen opted to not bring the 4-door Golf R32 to the United States. However, what they did offer for fans of utility was the Audi A3 3.2 quattro. It was a very expensive luxury counterpoint to the Golf R32 that we often feature, and with effectively the same running gear performance was nearly identical. They’re fairly rare to come by, even in comparison to the pretty rare Golf R32 – most likely due to the hefty premium that Audi charged which put the 3.2 A3 squarely in line with even more commodious options like the A4 2.0T quattro Avant. Once in a while they do pop up for sale though, as a stealthy silver one has today – just in time for the inclement weather in New England:

4WD Week Tuner Tuesday: 2005 Audi A3 Abt Sportline

As I said in yesterday’s Coupe Quattro post, there are a lot of fun Audis that never made it to the U.S. Also like the Coupe Quattro, the A3 isn’t high on many enthusiast’s lists because we got some very similar cars here. However, there were some unique A3s produced and tuned in Europe that never made it to these shores, and this must be pretty high on the list. It’s a model that the U.S. didn’t see; a manual 3.2 Quattro S-Line 2-door A3, which was then modified by noted Audi and Volkswagen tuner Abt. Abt has been in the game as long as some of the other big boys, and ran the factory-backed Touring Car efforts with the early TTs – so sufficed to say, they know what they’re doing. That know-how comes with a price though, and Abt cars are known for being pretty pricey out of the box – so not many have been sold. Take a look at this great rarity for sale today in Germany:

Like my complaints about the second generation R32 were answered with the 6-speed second generation TT 3.2, this A3 has the right gearbox and fun motor combination. Normally I’d prefer a 4-door but the lines of the A3 are prettier than the Golf by a long shot, so the coupe still looks great. The Abt kit integrates reasonably well, though I think the rockers and front spoiler are just a little bit too much. I also much prefer the early 90s Speedline-sourced Abt wheels over more recent offerings, but these fit the car period correctly as they should have been. One neat feature I do really like is the quad exhaust; in 3/4 profile the car reminds me a bit of a streamlined M-Coupe, and that’s not a bad thing at all. For about half the going rate of a second generation R32 then, this car sure looks like a lot of fun – but no, you can’t have it here. Das ist streng verboten!

2004 Audi TT Roadster 3.2 S-Line

Okay, so it’s not exactly convertible weather here in New England, but the dreary weather of late has me wishing for a bit more sunshine and warmth, and what better way to invigorate the morning than some wishful thinking. In this case, it’s in the sunshine-loving and retina searing form of an Imola Yellow Audi TT. This is perhaps one of the rarest first generation TTs available and was as expensive as they came, with the 3.2 VR6 and DSG dual-clutch transmission in S-Line Roadster form. As if that wasn’t enough, this particular model is also basically brand new, with a scant 17,000 miles covered in nearly 10 years. If you long for a new king of the Mk.1 TTs at a cut-rate price, this may be the perfect opportunity:

Upgraded alloy 18″ wheels- upgraded Bose sound system- Premium package- power convertible top- 6 disc CD changer- heated seats- Xenon headlights- Rear lip extension.

This example is nearly perfect throughout and comes impeccably maintained and fully documented.
The original MSRP was over $47K-here is your chance to attain this Roadster at a bargain price. Less than a thousand Roadsters were shipped over to the US.
This TT has been fully serviced since day one and is ready to be enjoyed.

Please call for more information on this stunning Roadster 267.934.2347

Perfect throughout sure sums up how this TT looks, and while the sticker price – a cool $22,000 – sounds like a lot for a early TT, the reality is that the condition of this car probably warrants the price. I’m not a huge fan of the Celebration wheels and wish this had the rare 19″ 3.2 multi-spoke wheels instead, but since they’re in perfect condition I’m not sure that’d be a deal breaker. The real question is if you’d want Imola Yellow – in all honesty, if I were in the market for one of these I think I’d hold out for the equally rare Papaya Orange color. Despite this, the opportunities to get into a car of this condition for this money won’t be frequent, and considering the rarity and condition I don’t think the price is all that outlandish. Now, where’s the sun?

Snow Patrol: 2008 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro Avant S-line v. 2007 BMW 328xi Touring

We had a bit of a surprise a this past week in New England – snow fell early in November throughout most of the area. I promptly updated my calendar for this weekend to change over snow tires – always a bitter-sweet time of year. As much as moving all that snow is a pain, if you have the right car it sure can be fun to drive in! In my case, I’ve been suffering a 8 year quattro drought, but thankfully my wonderful wife lets me sling her Subaru Outback through some parking lots from time to time – and importantly, she lets me take it to winter driving schools. Winter driving schools in general are one of the best ways to learn car control. Effectively, the same things occur on ice and snow that occur on the track – they just occur at a much, much lower speed. Ice and snow point out both strengths and faults in the chassis. Few people drive away from these events without a giant smile on their faces, even when they arrive afraid of driving in the white stuff!

You can buy many cars that are good in the snow or you can slot snow tires onto your winter ride; but if you want to combine some sport, some utility, and fantastic performance in the snow into one package, few do it better than these two. Unfortunately for American consumers, the days of Audi wagons in the U.S. are gone; we’re currently limited to the A4 Allroad. BMW still offers the wagons but at over $40,000 new without options, they’re not exactly affordable for most folks. What’s a German car fan to do? Well, you can look back a few years and find some great options – such as today’s A4 and 328. Let’s start with the A4:

Year: 2008

Engine: 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-4

DUAL ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL
POWER GLASS SUNROOF
TINTED WINDOWS
18 INCH WHEELS
FACTORY FLOORMATS

There’s a fair amount to like here – the S-line sport package coupled with the B7 chassis was one of the best looking A4s to date – while I still prefer the Titanium package, these are still impressive. The quattros have become more “safe” with their AWD system over several generations and the newer quattros generally aren’t as good on snow and ice than the early generations, but they’re much smarter in changing conditions – something important to most drivers. I’m not a big fan of dark interiors and window tinting, but the 6 speed manual is a great match for the 2.0T power delivery. Not a fan of used Audis? How about a BMW:

Audis grab so much of the AWD headlines that BMW and Mercedes-Benz are often left out of the conversation. Despite this, the 328xi has evolved into a very competent car in the white stuff. Coupled with the torque-laden 3.0 inline-6, the 328 makes a great package for both sport and all-weather capability. This particular example looks splendid in dark blue over tan leather.

We are offering a beautiful 2007 BMW 328XI wagon for sale; in very good condition. This BMW is fully loaded with; all wheel drive system, power sunroof, CD player, leather interior, heated seats, and more! The Carfax report shows three owners, no accidents, and 21 service records! The vehicle is clean, has a beautiful color combo and is ready to go. Please view all pictures closely and ask all questions before buying.

BMW has always been known to manufacture very reliable vehicles and this 328XI is a perfect example. This BMW has 67,193 original documented miles. THIS CAR RUNS GREAT!

The vehicle is powered by 3.0L L6 DOHC 24V engine, which runs very strong and smooth. The automatic transmission shifts perfectly into every gear and is noise free. The suspension on the vehicle is tight and drives smooth on the road. The brakes work very well; with excellent stopping ability. All power options and vehicle functions work excellent. There are no maintenance lights on in this vehicle. The wheels are 16″ BMW wheels. The wheels are in very good condition and have some light curbing on them. The Continental tires have about 85-80% tread left. (tire size: 205/55R16).

The overall condition of this vehicle is very good. The exterior is in very good condition. The paint shines very nicely and is glossy. There are some light scratches here and there on the car. Would rate the exterior 8.5 out of 10. Call us and we will go over the vehicle while you are on the phone (724)799-9563. This BMW has a beautiful color scheme, the exterior is Blue and the interior is Tan. The interior is in very good condition. The driver seat is in very good condition and shows normal wear. The passenger seat along with the rear seats is in excellent condition. The carpet is in very good condition and has a couple light stains on it. The floor mats are in good condition and have some stains on them. Would rate the interior 8 .5 out of 10. All of the glass is in excellent condition.

The BMW isn’t as good looking as the A4, but I really prefer the color combination. Despite this, I think the A4 is a better package overall; manual, turbocharged quattros are always great fun. Prices on both seem to be on par with the market, and the Audi is slightly less expensive, making it even more attractive. Which would you choose?

Wagon Week: Forbidden Fruit – 2007 Audi A4 3.0 TDi Quattro Avant S-Line 6 speed

509

In the world of desirable Audis that enthusiasts want to import from Europe, there are multitudes of wagons; the S2 and RS2 are favorites, but truth be told there were few fast Audi wagons that were brought to the U.S. compared to those that have been available in Europe. There are several generations of RS wagons, S6 pluses, and even the original S4 4.2 V8 is pretty desirable. Notably missing from most lists would be cars like the one today, and that’s a shame because given the option between owning a B7 4.2 V8 powered S4 Avant or this car, I’d choose this car any day of the week and twice on Saturday. Why? Well, first off, there’s the name – one of the longest in Audi history. Not so simply stated, this car is a 2007 Audi A4 3.0 TDi Quattro Avant S-Line, but enthusiasts like to add the 6-speed manual part on. In the realm of cars we didn’t get that are spectacular, this is pretty high on my list. Plenty of punch, a healthy does of sport, the great looks of the B7, wagon and all wheel drive utility and good fuel mileage? Sign me up:

The only reason why we are selling our Audi is we need a bigger car for our (soon) extended family.

The car is currently located in San Diego, CA.

Mind blown. The S-line package really made the B7 a great looking car, and this one is no exception. The list of options alone is impressive, as is the original $80,000 price tag. As diesel wagons go this is about as desirable as one gets. These cars can be chipped and opened up and hang with S4s without much difficulty, but even in stock form the 3.0TDi isn’t exactly a slow car. This car combines all of the wonderful attributes missing from U.S. bound Audis these days – a turbo diesel RS4 Avant look with a 6 speed manual. I keep looking at the price and considering what organs I can do without; yes, it’s covered nearly 100,000 miles but looks pristine and the importation work has been done. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the only 3.0TDi A4 Avant in the U.S., and it’s likely to be the only one for quite a long time. At $27,000, this car strikes me as a very good deal all things considered.

Now, does anyone know what a spleen brings on the open market and how long I can live without it?

2007 Audi A4 Avant S-line Titanium Package

Let’s face it – wagons are awesome, and fast wagons are even better. Until very recently and the monster Mercedes, BMW and Cadillac offerings, Audi was the undisputed king of the fast wagon. While the S4 and S6 Avants grab most of the headlines and attention, the normal A4 was a solid performer in either V6 or turbo 4 form. This was especially true of the B7 chassis A4s, which offered either the silky smooth 3.2 V6 or the torque-rich 2.0T. More than just a pretty face lift of the B6 chassis, the B7 also sported revised steering and suspension that livened the ride. The ultimate of these cars were the S-line with the Titanium Package option, such as the car we see here.

To me, the main appeal of this car is that it isn’t an S4. Sure, you lose a lot of horsepower and sound from that V8. But, you also lose the repair bills from maintaining it. With the S-line Titanium Package, you get the fantastically well proportioned look of the B7, the usefulness of the wagon, and enough sport thrown in to have fun on your favorite road or commute. Did I mention how incredible those wheels look? They’re perfect.

The 2.0T has proven to be a stout motor if you want to tweak it, so attaining S4 levels of performance isn’t unheard of or out of reach. While we’d all love to run around in a sports car every day, the reality it’s hard to fit the wife, the child(ren), the dog(s), and the groceries into that R8 you’ve been pining after. Coupled with the great 6 speed manual, this is a fun, sporty, practical choice if you want to get into an Audi with over 100,000 miles and have your bank account remain in the black! The seller is well regarded in the Audi community and offer only premium examples of the marque, which is reflected in the condition of this car. As such, I think the car is fairly priced especially when you take into consideration the rarity of the the combination of color, manual, wagon, S-line and Titanium Package options.
