Feature Listing: 1998 BMW M3 Sedan

The E36 M3 is the first M car that I can remember obsessing over. Ever since I got a die cast model of an E36 coupe race car in 6th grade, I’ve dreamt of flying around a track in one of these legendary machines, S52 wailing away at the top of the rev range. While it may be a bit longer before I can fully realize that dream, it seems fate decided to throw me a bone because I finally got some seat time in an E36 and it just so happens to be this very car. That’s right, the M3 which you see before you hath been driven by yours truly. The current custodian of this vehicle lives about 5 minutes away from me so naturally I had to lay eyes and hands on this vehicle if I was to write about it.

Honestly I was a little worried that the car wouldn’t live up to my lofty expectations. I have done my best to quiet the inner child in me that sees these vehicles as something extraordinary and instead look at them as the elevated daily driver that they are. After all if you think about the lineage of the M3, it’s kinda crazy that BMW decided to build a 4-door version. Then again, this was the 1990s, a glorious time for sport sedans, when crossovers were but a tickle in a designers finger and car design was, restrained.

1989 BMW 325ix

This 325ix was rebuilt as a present for the seller’s father, but apparently Dad wanted an SUV instead. I’m guessing it was a sort of homespun “Pimp My Ride” judging by the looks of it – take the old E30 and pretty much redo it top to bottom, with some extra flair added for good measure. I already know the flair is going to be polarizing, but there’s enough good stuff in here to keep it out of the “Friday Fail” column for me. Wherever you think it lands on the taste scale, there’s no question that a lot of effort was put into giving this 325ix a new life.

1997 BMW M3 Sedan with 37k miles

I unabashedly love the E36 M3 sedan, as I’ve repeatedly stated here. Some of it’s sentimentality, while there’s a newer undercurrent of practicality as they are one of the better performance values out there. We’ve seen some crazy prices for E36s, but those usually come in the Lightweight guise. Even ultra-low mileage M3s are usually sub-$20k, but today’s seller is trying to jump on the ///Mppreciation train and perfect E39 M5 money for his E36. I’m all for giving these cars the respect they deserve, but M3s with this mileage used to sit just under $15k, and last time I checked they were not E30 M3s (and they never will be).

Motorsports Monday: 1990 BMW 325i

I feel sometimes that the BMW E30 3 series is kind of like the Mazda Miata of the classic German car world. It’s the answer to almost every automotive question. Whether you want a modern classic to cruise in, a track day warrior or a practical commuter vehicle, there’s an E30 for everyone. This particular one came to our attention via our friends at Classic Car Club Manhattan. One of their clients, Mike, has it up for sale. This is one sleeper of a 325i sedan, with an S50 3.2 liter engine under the hood. Want a dual purpose street/track day car? This would be an excellent solution.

1998 BMW M3 Sedan

Tuner cars can be a scary proposition, with trails of work of unknown quality hiding in places you may not be able to see. At the same time, the lack of originality often drives the price down, meaning you could pick up a lot of fun for reasonable money. I’ve always loved the E36 sedan, and today’s example corrects the E36 M3’s most common complaint of lack of power. Someone put some serious miles on this car, and that leaves even more question marks. More investigation is need, as in “what’s a 90s interior look like after that mileage?” and “what does the E36 suspension look like after 100k miles of burnouts?” But maybe you don’t care, and seeing a 300+whp M3 sedan for the price of average E36 M3s is an open door for the next owner to continue exploring the badass sedan life.

Tuner Tuesday: 1998 Dinan S3 BMW M3 Sedan

If earlier’s Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 911 Turbo didn’t quench your lust for all things purple, I’m happy to offer another Barney-colored treat for you. However, unlike the friendly and more than somewhat irritating children’s star, the object of interest here is the very popular and quickly become a classic E36 M3 sedan. Offering practicality, a stiff chassis with lighter weight than the coupes, this car has turned into one of the more sought after BMWs in recent history. This is especially poignant considering the current state of the rest of the 1980s M market; if you don’t jump on the bandwagon now, you’re likely to miss out. Further heightening the appeal of this sedan is the more rare shade of Techno Violet; a polarizing but popular color, and of course the full spectrum of Dinan S3 upgrades. 10k Friday: 1998 BMW M3 Sedan


Our friends over at MotoringConBrio.com have impeccable taste in cars, as evidenced by their unique photo choices in the weekly “Assorted Grab Bag of Things We Like.” They have a way of reinforcing my car tastes, making me constantly say “Yes! Exactly! I didn’t think anyone else thought quite like that!” while often expanding my horizons, like thinking “Oh damn, you’re right: that French car IS hot.” Case in point; their current garage holds a Euro-bumpered E28 M5 and an E36 M3 sedan. If this isn’t your first time reading this blog, I need not explain more.

Well, apparently the time has come to focus the collection and the E36 didn’t make the cut. A hesitant seller means a lucky buyer, and whoever snags this E36 is among the latter. A clean daily driver with outstanding performance, it exemplifies this model’s aptitude for carving corners with a baby seat in the back. Well-priced with middling miles, MCB writes a description like someone who has read and critiqued a hell of a lot of car ads; succinct with all pertinent info and full honesty. This car won’t last long.

1998 BMW M3 Sedan

Oftentimes, as car enthusiasts, we face a dilemma. Sure, we want a fast car, but more often than not, performance comes with a bit of discomfort. Most of us like the fun of a manual gearbox, but for those who live in urban areas like myself, it gets to be a bit tiresome in the stop and go traffic. What to do, then? Well, the E36 BMW M3 sedan is a good place to start when it comes to automotive compromise. Four doors, powerful inline-6 under the hood and the availability of an automatic gearbox, such as the car we see here for sale in Florida. Dakar Yellow is a loud color if you are seeking to go unnoticed, but it’s a rare hue, for those who would like to be different.

10K Friday: E36 or E46? 1998 M3 Sedan v. 2002 M3 Convertible

Last week’s M3 v. S4 10K showdown wasn’t particularly a success, I’ll admit. No one wanted the question marks behind those two modified cars that were arguably overprice and too-high mileage. I’m back today with another duo, and as always I’ve tried to spice it up a bit. Today we’re going to look at a E36 M3 Sedan versus a E46 M3 Convertible. No brainer? Ah, but the sedan has an automatic and is the semi-polarizing Techno Violet. Not to let the E46 run away with things either, the E46 is the less-desirable convertible with the less-desirable SMG transmission with many, many more miles. Yet, they’re offered around the same price, which begs the question “Which would you choose”? Let’s look at the sedan first:

Supercharged 1997 BMW M3 Sedan


It’s no secret that I have a big ol’ soft spot for the E36 M3 sedan. Beyond my personal experiences, I still see it as a very sharp BMW, a confluence of simple basic design and subtly aggressive modifications. We’ve featured some modified E36s here and superchargers are a common add-on, but this one comes with a more thorough description and a bit more power than the usual supercharger options thanks to Eurosport twinscrew. With a claimed 361 horsepower at the rear wheels, this E36 is putting E92 M3-levels of power at the crank. Some cool factory rarities like the Byzanz paint with no sunroof and a manual combine with the serious mechanical upgrades, light OZ wheels, and an interesting AC Schnitzer spoiler to make one of the cooler total-package E36s I’ve seen in a while.
