How Do You Take Your Estoril?

Estoril is regarded as one of the best blues ever produced, and while a similar shade has recently appeared on Mercedes, it will forever be a distinctly BMW color for me. I was first struck by this blue when it appeared on the first BMW M car I ever drove, a friend’s E36 M3 sedan. It later appeared on the BMW M Coupes and Roadsters and the X5, creating the best-looking examples of all.

No surprise, then, that my first Estoril car is an E36 M3. Unfortunately this example comes with the diminishing automatic, but it’s in great condition after just 75k miles. If you don’t have the use of your left leg, it’d be a great car. Low-mileage examples of the fantastically-handling but least-extreme M3 are holding strong in the mid-teens, making it a great performance bargain.

Up for auction is a Beautiful Low mileage1998 BMW M3. This is one of the nicest E36 M3’s I have ever seen. It is a One-Owner car that has been babied its whole life. The car was originally sold at Motorwerks BMW of Bloomington, MN. The original owners then moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 2002 where the car remained since. It was owned by an older couple who drove the car sparingly and always garaged it. It is bone stock and has never been modified! Its on overall Excellent condition and now it is looking a second owner to love and care for it!

The exterior of this M3 is in excellent condition. The body is laser straight and there are no dents or dings. The Estoril Blue Metallic paint is in excellent shape. No major chipping or scratches. All of the trim and lights still look like new. This M3 is Carfax certified to have never been in an accident. The car looks just as nice as the pictures show!

The interior is in excellent condition as well. The Gray Leather seats are soft and supple. They are in amazing shape! There are no tears, rips, or deep wear lines anywhere. The carpet is in great condition. The door panels, trim panels and dashboard are all very nice and have no cracks. The headliner is perfect! All of the electrical equipment in the car works as it should (Windows, locks, sun roof, stereo, OBC, lights, etc). The A/C blows cold. The trunk compartment is in very nice shape. All of the original tools and spare tire are there!

Overall the cosmetic condition of the car is excellent. You would never know this car is 15 years old!

This M3 is in excellent mechanical condition. We have inspected and test driven the vehicle over 100 miles and have found no major mechanical problems. The engine starts right up and runs very strong. The transmission shifts smooth as it should. It was just replaced with a rebuilt transmission less than 500 miles ago! The car does not leak anything. This Beemer runs and drives like it should for having only 75k miles! I just had new BF Goodrich G-Force Comp 2 tires installed. The previous owner cared for the car meticulously. The car has ALL the service records since new! Here are some recent highlights:

Next up, we have one of my favorite BMWs ever, the Z3-based BMW M Coupe. This earlier 1999 model shares the smooth (if Euro-jealous) 240hp S52 inline-6. In addition to the epic clownshoe shape, they came in Estoril, cementing their place as an oddly-gorgeous classic. This example has just barely cracked 100k miles and features a matching interior. That leather isn’t my favorite choice, and neither are the unnecessary wheel spacers, but with no-reserve and lacking the highly sought-after and more expensive S54, this could be a great snag.

I have forsale this 1999 BMW Z3 M Coupe in Estoril blue over blue / black interior. This is a rare find with only 118 built in 99 with these options in this color. The M coupe is an outstanding car to drive. Handles like its on rails. Lots of character in a unique, timeless “clown shoe” style. This car features a S52 straight six delivering 240 bhp through a 5 speed manual transmission. This car has been very well maintained with lots of recent maintenance listed below and with 101k miles its in great shape. The exterior is clean and straight with a stunning blue / black interior with minimal wear with just minor wear on the drivers bolster. Lastly, we have a car produced decades before Estoril began beautifying the streets, the classic 2002. A well done restoration with some subtle liberties taken, it’s a truly striking little car. Bidding is starting at a reasonable level, but with the reserve still on it’s tough to determine how much of the claimed $25k in receipt the seller expects back.

The driver seat will recline when using the bottom left recliner (the toggle on the side of the seat does not recline). As many of you know, the modifications are endless on these cars. There are 3 tiny paint bubbles (size of a dime) below the rear window.

1993 BMW M3 Sedan Widebody & Supercharged

Screen Shot 2013-05-14 at 11.23.31 AM

Usually when I see E36 widebodies I scroll on as quickly as possible. They always look like they’re trying too hard and that it would have been cooler with more restraint. Today’s E36 is trying pretty hard, but it’s on one of my favorite modern Bimmers, the E36 M3 Sedan. It backs up the fat arches with a built S50 and a supercharger, developing plenty of twist to spin the fat meats on the back.

I like the idea of a widebody sedan, and if it were my car, I’d let the fenders speak for themselves and go OEM+ with the wheels and bumpers. But for now, it’s a unique take on the tuner M3 that would be a ton of fun for the money if it stays under $15k.

One-owner 1997 BMW M3 Sedan

Search “E36 M3 Sedan” on this site and you’ll find plenty of articles where I wax nostalgic about my friend’s Estoril Blue dream machine, so I’ll keep the shoulda-woulda-coulda memories to myself. The bottom line is that the M3 sedan is hands-down the best looking model from the E36 generation. The 4-door proportions combined with the sharper M bodywork completely work, gracefully combining aggression and class, speed and subtlety. I tend to ignore automatics as the 5-speed is pure heaven, which is luckily how today’s clean one-owner example comes. Silver on white/grey is clean if a little subdued. With the E30 M3 getting even more press than usual, this is a bold reminder of what an amazing value the E36 M3 is.

Rear Window Defroster
and more

There’s a little interior wear, while the stock wheels or some nice BBSs and removing the spoiler would make this much cleaner. The good bits are there with what appears to be a very well cared for E36, low mileage and one owner. $7,100 right now is an absolute steal, and just over half of what E36 M3s in this condition have gone for. Anything below $14k is a fair price for this M3, making me think I should join in the bidding!

1998 BMW M3 Sedan

The E36 M3 sedan is my favorite version of this hot BMW. I’ve driven several, both with the 5-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Tight suspension, practicality and a punchy inline six made for a very attractive package. Obviously the 5-speed was the more entertaining drive of the pair, as it gave better access to the entire powerband. As successive generations of M3s have been released, I still prefer the E36 M3 sedan over all that succeeded it. This M3 for sale in Atlanta has low mileage but unfortunately has two pedals. I guess you can’t always get what you want…

1998 BMW M3 Sedan on eBay

This car is perfect and I’m willing to prove it. Make an appointment with any local to me mechanic and I will take it there to get it checked, at your cost.

Private seller and second owner. 1998 BMW M3, Arctic Silver paint over Dove gray interior, with automatic transmission. The car has 30,739 miles and it in near perfect condition. Wheels are perfect with no curb marks at all. Paint is 99% with just a couple tiny rock chips on the front bumper. The interior is also all original and looks great with minimal wear, I’ve never seen 15 year old BMW seats that look this good. It has never had any kind of body work or paint done on it at all everything is original and close to perfect. This BMW has never been modified at all and spent it’s entire life in south Florida until last year when I took it to Atlanta GA. The first owner bought this car when he retired and put 26,000 mile on it in 14 years. I’ve had it for the last year and it has been perfect and trouble free. I just bought a 911 so this needs to go to a new home.

I have meticulously maintained this car and done tons of preventative maintenance including rebuilding all the brake calipers and changing discs and pads with OEM parts. I’ve also replaced all the weather stripping on the outside of the car with OEM replacement parts in the attempt to make this car as close to new as possible. It also has new tires with approximately 2500 miles on them and a 4 wheel alignment. I have never had any problems with this car and it starts up and runs like it is brand new. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

I’ve always been baffled as to why someone would have bought an M car, even if it is a sedan, with an automatic transmission. If this car had a 5-speed, it certainly would be more valuable. As it stands, this might be a $10,000 or so car. If it had the 5-speed, it might be worth the asking price to the right buyer.

1989 BMW 325ix with 62,000 miles

Beginning in the early 1980s, all wheel drive started trickling its way into a number of non off-road vehicles. Audi began to perfect their Quattro system, Mercedes-Benz introduced 4matic, and BMW tested the waters with their ix models. While the E34 5 series was offered with all wheel drive in certain markets, the US received the ix prefix in the form of the two or four door E30 325i.

The ix never took off sales wise in the US and they are quite a rare sight on the roads these days. I did see a few during the years I spent in Boston, which is where I assume a good number of these cars wound up. Amazingly, here’s one of the lowest mileage examples I’ve seen and it’s a relatively short drive from where I live.

1989 BMW 325ix on eBay

For sale is my 1989 BMW 325ix with 62,231 original miles (adult owned) that has been driven only 1000 miles in last 10 years.zinnoberrot (red) exterior with light gray interior. This is one of the nicest surviving 325ix you’ll find anywhere! if you are looking to buy an untouched e30 all wheel drive you are not going to find another one like this.

2.5 liter SOHC inline 6 cylinder. Maintenance is current, valves just adjusted. Runs great and strong without any issues.the car runs ,drives and look like a car with 60k miles.

The automatic transmission shifts perfectly and is very smooth.

The body is in perfect condition with no scratches.the paint is all original and shines just like a new car. This car has never been in any kind of accident and has the vin tag on all of the body panels and has always been garaged and cared for .There are no rust in this vehicle and the car looks perfect.I’d rate the original paint on this car 9.5 out of 10.

The interior is every bit as nice as the exterior. The original cloth seats have no sign of wear or tears and are in perfect condition. The carpet is free of spots & stains and is clean even under the seats. No french fries or coffee stains ! The dash is completely crack-free. The headliner is perfect and clean. This car has never been smoked in.

All equipment and options work correctly including power windows, manual sunroof, door locks, mirrors, rear defrost, original BMW radio and power antenna also HEATED SEATS. The A/C also blows ice cold .the car comes with 4 original BMW mud flaps ,thule roof rack and original ski bag (never used)

It has the original BMW cross-spoke 15″ wheels (including the spare) that are is perfect condition The tires are 205/55-15 with about 5 miles on them (I just install 4 brand new tires). I just replaced front shocks ,brakes all around and front rotors. Timing belt , water pump , A/C belt , alternator belt ,P/S belt , engine oil and coolant were replaced last week (almost zero miles on them). All wheel drive system is also in perfect working order just like everything else in the car.

With about two days to go, this E30 ix has yet to meet the reserve. Few ix models with such low miles exist, so I’d assume the seller is looking for around $10,000 or so. I’d say a more realistic figure might be around $8,000. If this particular car had the 5 speed manual, it might be a bit more desirable in the enthusiast’s eyes. Still, it’s a nice piece and provided the all wheel drive bits are in good working order as stated, it would be an inexpensive way to enjoy the Ultimate Driving Machine all year round.

“A 200-mph BMW 3 Series is one of those deviant cars that we’re just happy to see from time to time. The fact that this one is every bit as easy to live with as the slightly more upmarket M5 makes it the ultimate sleeper.” — Edmunds Inside Line

“Beyond such shenanigans, everyday use is absolutely not out of the question. Just leave DTC on and Power off. The default setting for the seven-speed SMG III (pulled also from the E60) shift rhythm, however, is always at Level Five. For me, this is great since I do that anyway in either the M5 or M6. You can tell Hartge that you don’t want full-time Level Five as the default, sure, but that would, in turn, make you a wuss.” — European Car

“On the plus side, the H50 has the practicality of a 3 Series, including four real seats, highway cruising capability and all the storage any human being could reasonably want from a 200-mph car. Hartge has dressed the interior with a new steering wheel and acres of carbon-fiber, although this is all optional. This 3,680-pound beast is effectively the M5 CSL-Lite that BMW says it simply cannot make.” –Edmunds Inside Line

Hartge Conversion Equipment Listing:

E60 M5 V10 Engine with all associated parts, radiator, modified wiring harness, modified headers, sports catalytic converters.

Own bespoke engine mapping including HARTGE modification of the top speed limit, 7 speed SMG gear box, special exhaust system, modified rear axle, rear differential with 0-100% LSD, modified drive shafts, modified underbody, modified gas tank system.

Low-mileage 2003 Audi RS6 for sale

Before Audi started RS-ifying every model it could, they had a tacit policy of only letting one model of RS out at a time, and rarely at that: first the venerable RS2 in 1994-1995, then the sexy RS4 in 2000-2001, then breaking the chain of Avants and Eurocentrism with the understated monster RS6 finally gracing our shores from 2002 to 2004. This was no quickened divorcee’s TT or beefed-up college student’s A3. While I am glad Audi is making those cars (it’s better than not), the RS6 comes from a purer time when hyper-powered civilian cars were the exception and not the rule and it, along with the E39 M5 and E55, terrified unsuspecting civilians. When I head back to the island I grew up on, I still take the long way home to see if the RS6 is parked outside that one house.

The ad is mainly dealer exclamation points and stats any good German car fan should know by heart, but the beauty is in the numbers. 450hp, 4.6 seconds 0-60, 56k miles, Buy-It-Now at $27.9k. 56k miles is pleasantly low for an 8 year-old driver’s car, and this would be one hell of a ride if you can snag it around $25k. It’s in the perfect hue of Daytona Gray Pearl, and while the white leather is slightly garish, I’d take it.

Just truly one of my favorite sedans ever made, and while the typical Audi maintenance will probably catch up with you, it’s still dangerously close to “affordable” in my book. I want it.

1997 BMW M3 sedan

It seems that when I’m looking around at E36 M3 sedans, a lot of them are equipped with automatic transmissions. Every time I spot a clean one with a 5 speed, it catches my eye. Like this one:

1997 BMW M3 sedan on Philadelphia Craigslist

The seller states:

1997 BMW M3 Sedan. 112,000 miles Silver exterior with Black leather interior.
Excellent condition 4 door with 5 speed transmission. Equipped with luxury package wood interior, power everything – seats with heat, windows, locks, cruise, on board computer and roof. The only options it does not have is the cd changer and alarm. M3 is all stock, absolutely no modifications have ever been done.

I bought this M3 more than 5 yrs ago when it had 92,000 miles on it from a family member. No issues with it at all, everything works perfectly. Well serviced and taken care of, oil changes and services regularly and extremely reliable. Immaculate paint and near perfect interior. I am asking $9.9k or reasonable offers – prices similar to those for sale in the area but in much better shape than what I have seen around. I am selling because I need to get an SUV, I just don’t drive it enough.

While any type of M car is a risk with over 100k miles, the seller seems rather honest in the description. Buying an SUV to replace this fine machine seems like heresy, however. This is a lot of car for $9,900, especially given that it was, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of a sport sedan ever to emerge from

Euro 1987 Alpina B6 2.7 for sale

I give the E30 M3 a lot of love for many reasons.  Foremost, it’s my Eleanor, the perfect car that I’d give up all others for.  Its racing pedigree and gorgeous homologated shape only add to that desire.  But I think one thing that allows the M3 to be held in such exceptional regard is that it’s based off the quintessential, and thus ubiquitous, cheap German sports car, the BMW 3-series.  The fact that E30 318s and 325s are such regulars in beater race series like 24 Hours of Lemons and Chumpcar highlights their quick, cheap, and omnipresent nature.  The fact that the M3 explodes all of the good things about the E30 and is so hard to get ahold of leaves it on a misty pedestal while the lesser E30s pass as mundane.

Automobiles such as this Alpina B6 can distract some 3-series attention from the M3.  From the same North Wales seller as the B9 3.5 Coupe recently featured, this 2.7L sedan puts out more power than an M3 and has it’s own eye-catching styling.

The car looks to be in great shape and has covered just over 80k miles.  The silver Alpina stripes look absolutely awesome on Alpinweiss, and if you’ve read this site much, you know how I feel about those wheels (lust).  I also like the fact that it’s a 4-door.  The massive front spoiler looks like it could use some support via some other body pieces on the sides and back, but the railroad look is cool in its own way, and I love the old black lip spoiler out back.  The seller says it’s quicker than an M3, which it may be in a straight line but I doubt it can match the M3’s homologated suspension bits in the twisties.  Even if the seller is to be believed, the $12.5k Buy-it-Now price is fast approaching M3 territory, to say nothing of the importation worries.  Enticing, but my money would still be drawn to the boxed fenders before the train scoop.

Impeccable, Individual E36 M3 Sedan for sale

A brief switch away from our Budget Theme Week to highlight an exceptional car recommended by reader/commenter Bob…

I believe I’ve recounted it before, but the E36 M3 Sedan was the first fast car I ever got to drive after receiving my license.  My best friend’s dad was a high-powered lawyer who lived modestly but loved his toys, hiding an Estoril Blue M3 4-door and 6 Ducatis behind his unassuming 2-car garage doors.  With carefully timed and worded requests, we were allowed to take it out on occasion and entered active car enthusiasm for the first time after years of reading and dreaming.  The car purred, growled, and clawed its way around the island we grew up on, and thus firmly planted itself in my automotive genetics.  It is essentially why I write for this blog.

Bob alerted us to this exceptional M for sale on eBay.  It’s covered a relatively low 73k miles and is claimed to be “shockingly nice.”  From the photos and description it looks it, an excerpt of which follows.

At EuroWerkz we have bought, sold, owned, maintained, built, modified, showed, and won with some of the nicest BMW M3’s in the country. We are 25+ year members of the BMW CCA. I am a long time member of the E30 SIG as well as an active member of several BMW forums and groups. We love BMW’s we know BMW’s and M3’s and this is one hell of a nice M3.

It took me over 2 years to buy this car from the prior owner and I have enjoyed it for a while so it’s time for the next more permanent owner to enjoy. We would really like to see this car go to a BMW enthusiast who can appreciate it and continue it’s over the top care and maintenance as I see this car as one that will represent the breed 10-20-30 years from now. If your looking for a track car candidate, please not this one. You don’t have a garage space? Please find another car. Live in a big city with sketchy parking? Well, you get the point. There are plenty of excellent condition M3’s out there. This car is just soooo… much nicer than that.

This car looks, runs, and drives like a 30k mile 3 year old M3. It is in fantastic condition for any age and mileage but it is a 12 year old car with just 73k miles. Quite honestly it is the nicest car I have for sale right now and that is saying quite a bit considering our spring inventory of European beauties. You can read below about it’s history, options, and maintenance. Call or e-mail me and we’ll talk about it all day if you want.

Sounds like they mean it!  The custom Calypso Red from BMW Individual is gorgeous and unique, though I’m still partial to Estoril.  I understand that it has been very well taken care of and they hold this car in extremely high regard, though I’m not quite sure why they are SO enthusiastic and think it deserves well over Blue Book.  At writing there’s 2 days left with bidding at $11,400 and reserve not met.  If it’s truly as nice as they claim, I’d say it deserves $15-17k.  Regardless of what forms their opinion, I’m certainly on board in hoping it goes to a true fan and enthusiast with the time and resources to keep it nice.
