The Mercedes-Benz 300D we featured last month via our reader Jimmy is back up for sale. This car strikes a nice balance between concours condition and one that is clapped out. Anyone that is in the market for a usable W123, take note.

Syncro Westies are a special breed, but today’s Vanagon is cut from an interesting cloth – or lack thereof. While most Westfalias’ tops popped up with a cloth tent, later models like this example could be had with a plastic high-top. What is lost in aerodynamics is gained in weatherproofness, creating a cozy loft and more mounting space for the rack-loving van crowd. While the top sticks out, the overall aesthetics are upgraded but pleasantly subtle, with upsized steel wheels, the great South African grille/light combo and tough bumpers blending into the colorless white/black scheme. The more I look at it, the more I love this van, and we haven’t even gotten to the mechanicals! Those are as good as they get, with an upgraded turbodiesel and Syncro four-wheel drive. No reserve will make this a fun auction to watch, though the low mileage and strong option and upgrade lists will probably take it out of most people’s price range.

1 CommentYou’ve probably noticed, but we have a few favorite specialty dealers here on GCFSB. One of which is 4Star Classics in Hampshire County, England. These folks really take the extra mile to present their vehicles well without making them overly glossy, which is a mistake made by many a forecourt. Good pictures and a comprehensive history go a long way towards moving the metal. So, continuing on with Wagon Week, let’s take a look at this immaculate 300TD for sale by this very dealer with under 40,000 miles. These are cars known for racking up epic mileage, so at this rate, we’re basically dealing with a new car in W123 terms. For fans of rowing their own, this is tasty number, as it comes equipped with a 4-speed manual; something we didn’t see much on these shores. Care to make a statement on the school run? This will have the hipsters drooling with envy.

1 CommentIt seems there’s a never ending supply of good Mercedes-Benz W123s out there. I’ve met a good number of people who have owned or experienced these cars over time and all of them have walked away impressed. With modern manufacturing and bean counters, it’s doubtful we’ll ever see a car engineered to a point like this in the near future. The good thing is, however, that these cars’ durability have kept many on the road, clocking hundreds of thousands of miles each in the process. This 300TD for sale in Georgia has made a few long distance trips, having just broken 160,000 miles. Considering their reputation, the break in period for this final year W123 estate has just ended.

Comments closedAbout eight years ago, I had the chance to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum outside of Stuttgart, Germany. Of all the exhibits, the one that intrigued me the most was a car transporter with models from the early 1980s on it, including a W123 230E sedan in the same metallic blue as we see here on this well-preserved 1984 300D. We’ve poured over the qualities that make these mid-sized Mercedes sedans, coupes and estates great throughout the years, but rarely do they come as showroom fresh as this one for sale in California.
