Ministerial Transport: 1997 Mercedes-Benz S420 & 1995 Mercedes-Benz S320

As much as world leaders bang on about climate change and conservation, what is it that we typically see in the car park at the G7 Summit? Big black sedans. With security for heads of state of utmost importance, it’s easier to pack in a bunch of armor and defense systems into a car like the Audi A8 of German Chancellor Angela Merkel than it is a Toyota Prius. The consummate state limousine for many nations has always been one car: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 1990s saw the chains move for this perennial favorite, growing larger in almost every dimension with a new V12 engine on offer and a myriad of electronically assisted accessories. The following two black W140 sedans represent the lower end of what was on offer in the US market, each with low mileage. We’ll start with this 1997 S420 for sale in Texas.

1995 Mercedes-Benz S600 with 4 place seating option

When production of the Mercedes-Benz 600 finally ended in 1981, there was a void for an über Mercedes sedan that wouldn’t be filled until the reintroduction of the Maybach brand in 2002. The introduction of the W140 S-class ten years earlier, however, went a long way towards giving buyers at the high end something special. Enter the 600SEL, which would be renamed the S600 in 1994, with its 6.0 liter V12 engine. If you wanted to distinguish your top of the line S-class even further, you could opt for the four-place seating package, consisting of fully adjustable rear seats, lumbar support and rear sunshade control. A burlwood center console rounded off the look. This four-seater S600 for sale in New Jersey has traveled just under 64,000 miles and is the perfect tool to go play CEO.

It’s pretty amazing when generations of cars come together in value; right now, there are 4 generations of Mercedes-Benz S-class models that all seem to hit market for around the same amount. From the beginnings of the “Sonder” Class Mercedes with the W116 through the W220 cars that are only just over a generation old, there’s a tremendous amount of luxury available in these super sedans and coupes. So what would be your choice? We’ll go by age this time, starting with the W116:

1994 Mercedes-Benz S320

It’s common knowledge that you can get more for your money with a used car than you can new. If you are brave enough to dabble in the art of pre-owned luxury vehicles you can, in fact, get a lot more. So let’s transition from the E320 featured earlier today to this S320 from the same model year, 1994. While it’s not the top of the line S class of its day, this car still cost a pretty penny when new and can now be had for a fraction of its original value. This particular car for sale in California has only 55,000 original miles, leaving a lot of life left for the new owner.

Clean 1992 Mercedes 600SEL, good $ per cylinder ratio

We love no reserve auctions. Particularly ones that start at under $1,000 for a car that once cost well over $100,000 when new. We’ve reported before about how these big Benzs with V-12s  can be a nightmare in terms of maintenance, but this one looked particularly clean and with no reserve, if the price is right, there may be some $s left over to help with inevitable repairs. I think the W140 probably isn’t as bad as the next generation of V12 Mercedes when it comes to work and cost to own, people just give it a bad rap because of the extra cylinders.
