The Mercedes-Benz 500E is a car which needs no introduction to the fans of GCFSB. We feature the model on a regular basis; as one of the most popular super-sedans produced by Mercedes, we’re always glad to see a very mint condition, low mileage model and hopeful for a steal when we see less pristine examples. The possibility always exists that one will sneak in at a cut-rate – a model that has higher miles and a small list of needs, for example, that will allow for a more reasonable purchase price. But as we pine and search for values on the 500E/E500 market, ironically we seem to ignore the model which replaced it in spirit; the E55 AMG. Part of that comes down to both the real and perceived gap in quality between the W124 and the W210 chassis; however, what is undeniable is what that equates to in the real world. Find a not-perfect, higher mile 500E today and you’ll be looking at around $10,000 or more while a mint condition, low mile E55 AMG is available for around the same amount. Which is the better proposition?

I feel as if time hasn’t been all that kind to the W210 Mercedes-Benz E class. We’re almost 20 years out since this car appeared on the scene and with it, a new styling language to take Mercedes-Benz into the 21st century. Under that fresh face was a good old standby in the form of the diesel engine. While most manufacturers had abandoned oil burners in the 1990s, Mercedes stayed on a few years longer in the US and offered the new W210 E class with the 3.0 liter inline-6 diesel that produced 174 horsepower and 244 lb ft of torque. There weren’t a whole lot of takers for this car in comparison to the petrol powered E320, but those who gave it a shot would be won over by the renowned Mercedes diesel durability. This E300 for sale in California has a remarkably low 70,000 miles on the clock, unusual for a diesel Mercedes.

4 CommentsIf you summer in The Hamptons, frequent Cape Cod or wander around an Ivy League campus, you’ll notice a curious thing if you are a car enthusiast. The monied folk often eschew the ubiquitous luxury SUV for the kind of car we see here, the luxury estate car. Many of them are available with all-wheel drive, like this 1998 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate for sale in Texas. If an SUV is a bit too over the top for you, but you still need the cargo capacity and all-wheel drive versatility, this low mileage W210 E class is a good compromise.

2 CommentsAs I scour through endless ads of exotica that appears here on GCFSB weekly, I still find charm in older Mercedes-Benz sedans that some folks may find a bit staid. When it was introduced for 1996, the E class took a radical turn with a front end decked out with oval headlamps, a styling hallmark that would crop up in a number of other models in the lineup over the next decade. This low mileage 1997 E320 would be the last year for the venerable M104 inline-6 motor in the E class, replaced the follow model year by the M112 V6.
