Transaxle Twofer: 1991 Porsche 944 Turbo Cabriolet and 1992 Porsche 968 Coupe

Here’s an interesting comparison for you! While the 1989 944 Turbo was the last year for the model in the US as the normally aspirated S2 and later 968 took the reigns, in other parts of the world the forced-induction models carried on – and lost their top. That’s right, in Europe you could get a 944 Turbo Cabriolet! They’re quite rare to see – just 625 were produced only in the 1991 model year, and this number represents about 1/10th the amount of 944 S2 cabriolets. Today’s car is pretty slick and already has been imported – but it’s also not very cheap. So, for comparison’s sake, I thought it would be interesting to see the 968 Coupe that the same seller is also offering – also a rare car in its own right, since just 649 were imported for the year. Let’s start with the Turbo:

Pleased to present our 1991 Glacier Blue 944 Turbo Cab for sale.

It is fully up to date on service, including Timing belt/Waterpump, tires and more. The car needs nothing and is ready to drive and enjoy!

The 944 Turbo Cabriolet is a rare car, with only 625 units made, 100 were made with right hand drive and the remaining 525 being left hand drive. The Turbo Cab was made for the U.K. and European markets and was never imported into the United states… We personally brought this one over from Germany. This particular Cab is a little more special, as it sports options like Sport seats, interior in Blue Extended Multicloth, and a Limited Slip Diff in a 5 speed manual transaxle. See option sticker in photo gallery. The car also features a larger Turbo S turbocharger from the factory. We have a binder of documents and records from the previous owner in Germany as well as service work completed here. 2 keys included, a top cover and rear wind fairing. With a crack free dash, overall a very clean and well maintained car and drives excellent! Reach out for more information!

Car comes with service records, books, two keys and a MA title. Happy to assist with shipping.

What a great color combination! I love the Studio fabric interior, and Glacier is a great color. It’s nice that it has the sport seats and a limited-slip differential, and like the US ’89s this one is S-specification, meaning much more punch, better brakes, and better suspension. The price? Far from cheap, that’s for sure. For the same money you can get into much lower-mileage examples, but of course you’ll be going coupe only. Speaking of…

For sale is our German imported Coral Red Metallic 968. Coral red was only offered during the 1992 model year and reportedly only 6 coupes were brought to the USA. This makes this color very rare!

This car is exceptionally clean and shows and drives like new. The previous owner took very good care of vehicle and it is kept with documentation. The interior is near perfect, the seats, carpet, door panels, headliner and all electrical switches. No cracks in the dash. The exterior follows suit. The only thing to note are some small scrapes in the rear bumper shown in pictures. Everything is functional, and the car is fully up to date on maintenance. We completed a Timing Belt Service, front brakes and more here in house. Comes with owners literature, 2 keys, service records and accessories. This car needs nothing and is ready to drive and enjoy this summer! Reach out for more information.

So another European example, and the seller is right – Coral Red Metallic L82H is among the rarest colors of US-market 968s. This one looks great and has the 17″ Cup 1 wheels for good measure, though I think the Cup 2s are a better fit for the design personally. 968 Coupes tend to sell for more than the 944 Turbos do in aggregate, but as this one has higher mileage it’s nice to see a more realistic price.

Of the two, I find the Turbo more appealing on several levels. I’ve always liked the shape of the 944 Cabriolet, and the allure of the rare Turbo variant coupled with a cool color combination puts this one over the top for me. That said, I really wouldn’t mind saving $10,000 and having a very nice 968, either. I think both of these cars are great occasional cars if you have the resources.
