Wagon Week: 2003 Audi S6 Avant

Audi seems to value their wagons more than most companies, with a long history of wagon variants and perhaps most tellingly a history of producing their highest-performing cars with longroofs. While we never got the RS6 wagon, the S6 was an admirable performer that flies under the radar. Today’s 2003 model is looking gorgeous in black on grey and on RS4/6 wheels. The little details like silver mirror caps and larger rails along the bottom of the doors lend bits of specialness. It may be ubiquitous in the school and playing field parking lots of affluent areas, but its subtlety won’t dissuade those who appreciate a great-looking V8 wagon.

A clean, sinister Avant with V8 power that can carry 5 (and dog) in style is what great wagons are all about, and Audi makes some of the best out there. I used to always assume the smallest models were best – S4, 3-series, Jetta, etc. – but as I’ve grown up I’ve seen the inherent virtues of midsize models, especially as I more practically look at what’s comfortable for 6’4″ humans. While the B5 S4 always seemed like the Audi wagon I wanted, but when I see an S6 like this I think it might just be the Goldilocks wagon.
