1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

I don’t get to feature these 911s a lot. That is partly due to there not being a ton of them around these days, but also those few that I do see never seem quite right. They’re either not in great condition or simply priced much too high, and while high prices aren’t typically something to dissuade me from writing up an air-cooled Porsche I usually end up passing them by. They just sit in a funny place in the market.

This one doesn’t seem to possess those issues, though even here where the price is at least somewhat reasonable I think it makes for a pretty tough sell. Here we have a Grand Prix White 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa with Midnight leatherette interior and a reported 68,124 miles on it. These U.S market 2.7-liter Carreras must be distinguished from their much more expensive European counterparts, which shared their MFI engine with the 1973 Carrera RS. Those 911s were basically a Carrera RS Touring with impact bumpers. These 911s are not quite that. However, that lack of a shared pedigree means prices are far lower and while their collector potential also is a good bit lower, pricing is at least such that they can make for a worthwhile consideration for those who desire a ’70s 911.

Lime Green 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

When it comes to Porsche’s early pastels I’m not sure any color is more paradigmatic of the genre than Lime Green. Perhaps Pastel Blue, but even that very bright color takes a back seat to the intensity of Lime Green. Put Lime Green on an early Carrera Targa with duck tail rear spoiler and you get a car that just makes me chuckle. Every aspect of it seems hellbent on drawing as much attention as possible. And I have no doubt that’s exactly what it does.

This particular example looks fantastic: a Lime Green 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in New Jersey, with Cinnamon leatherette interior and 74,237 miles on it. Unlike some ads where we wonder how the car really looks this seller pretty much shows us everything. Paint readings even are provided. That shows some confidence in this 911’s quality and it’s certainly not a bad way to sell a car.

1975 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

Another 2.7 liter Carrera Targa. For a model I don’t see very often they do seem to be coming up with more frequency these days. I featured one last week in one of my favorite color combinations, and while this one doesn’t quite possess that same immediate allure…man is it really grabbing my attention!

Why might that be? Somewhat surprisingly, the whale tail is really catching my eye. I always have preferred the whale tail to the duck tail – I think that’s just a product of growing up in the ’80s when the whale tail was more the norm – but generally speaking I don’t typically like the whale tail on a Targa. The lines do not seem to work. Here, though, everything comes together well and I love the look. I also really like the gold accents of the Carrera script and painted Fuchs. That’s surely a much more subjective feature, but those accents combined with the tail are what is putting this one over the top.

Presented in iconic Black over Gold, this US specification Carrera Targa is a great survivor car with an unbroken documentation chain, and showing just 62K original miles. This specific car (9115410024) was featured in Henry Rasmussen’s “Porsches For The Road – The Survivors Series,” with a two full page spreads, as well as a large photo in the table of contents. A copy of the book is of course included with the sale.

With only 184 of these Carrera Targas produced for the US market in 1975, this car is quite rare, furthermore with the color combination – understood to be one of just 36. Originally optioned and delivered with Koni shocks, gold Carrera scripts and gold Fuchs wheels, Comfort Group 2, and black paint per the original window sticker.

With wonderful documentation beginning in December of 1974 (original sales order and window sticker), every record, invoice, and ownership change is accounted for up through the present day. Sold new at De Maria Porsche Audi in Miami, Florida, the car spent many years in the Southeast region, Oklahoma, and in the Northwest since 2005. The file is full of wonderful letters from one owner to the next talking about the car, the care, and their enjoyment of it.

Sporting original finish Fuchs gold 15” wheels, and Bridgestone 215/60-15 (rear) and 195/65-15 (front) tires, the car looks striking in person with the matching Carrera gold script.

Regarding the exterior condition of the car, overall the car presents sharply in person. The rear of car (engine lid, both rear quarters and blending into the doors) was painted in 2011 after an unfortunate incident where the car rolled down a driveway and into a closed garage door. Rear glass was also replaced with a 1977 piece. Front bumper painted in preparation for sale due to chips and scratches. The front fenders, cowl, and hood appear to still be original paint, as well as all interior painted surfaces (trunk, door jambs, etc.). H-1 headlights are fitted, originals are included with sale. Original Targa top material on exterior and interior is in excellent original condition.

The interior is largely original, featuring factory sport seats in black leather. Carpet is original except for the back of the rear seats, and the floor mats. Non-original detail items include a modern stereo head unit and speakers in the doors, metal door release handles, and shift knob.

The car runs, shifts, and drives as you’d expect for just 62K original miles. Mechanically serviced at well-known Porsche marque specialists across the country over the years, the car currently does not have any mechanical needs. The York A/C was fitted from new, and currently works and blows cool air. Upgraded Bilstein shocks in 2014. The most recent service was at 62,300 miles and included an oil change, new battery, rebuilt alternator, brake fluid flush, and new front trunk lid shocks. Currently fitted with an M&K sport muffler, the original muffler is included as well.

This Carrera Targa is offered with the original owner’s manual, warranty booklet, key code card, original factory key (broken, but included), original tool set and blue jack, window sticker, and documentation file from new. The rest of this Carrera Targa compares favorably with the Orange one as well. For one, the price is lower. More importantly it seems much more thoroughly documented. I suppose I should stress that the level of documentation of the Orange Targa might have been perfectly fine, we simply were not told or shown as much within the ad itself. The last piece I’ll add: it appears the Orange Targa has sold. We don’t know precisely for what price it sold, but given that it was priced $10K above this one we can deduce that this one likely is priced pretty fairly.

While the Orange Targa had been fully restored and presented in very good condition, this Targa has received mostly touch ups. The front and rear have been repainted, with the rear’s paintwork being more extensive. The interior is said to be largely original. Some of the carpets and floor mats are not and the radio also is a newer unit. Those points help explain part of the lower price of this Carrera Targa, but I still think given its level of documentation and current condition it’s worth further consideration.


1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

This 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa wears one of my favorite exterior color combinations of Orange over Black. Stepping into the interior the combination comes in a slightly different hue and suddenly is one that I cannot recall seeing. That probably shouldn’t surprise us since contrasting Orange with Dark Blue wouldn’t seem the most likely of combinations, but here it looks good. There is a subtely to this blue that I think helps. A brighter blue might just look ridiculous. It isn’t clear that these colors are original as we must note the careful wording in the ad, but as a restored Carrera it looks really good. Its level of originality will determine whether the asking price makes sense.

Our example has lived the good life in California being sold to a dentist, John Meyer DDS, in September 1974 from Cutright Porsche-Audi based in Santa Monica, CA. It remained documented in his original service manual through 1976. It had changed ownership to a few Porsche enthusiasts over the years before receiving a remarkable 2008/2009 restoration to better than new caliber! During the meticulous restoration, the engine was removed for a top end rebuild by Advanced Engineering of Temecula, California. A full major service was also performed to include new drive belts, plug wires, CDI box replacement with Perma-Tune Electronic ignition, alternator, clutch with correct lightweight Carrera pressure plate and all the proper hardware to refurbish the engine compartment right down to the decal stickers! The vehicle maintains its rust free originality and factory sheet metal, while preserving and all reusable parts.

It was completely stripped with the engine removed and repainted period correct Porsche Orange (156) single stage paint in factory fashion. The interior is style pigskin leatherette with the rare light basket weave factory inserts in dark blue with factory silverknit nylon velour carpet in matching dark blue. It sports factory “black look” exterior trim, flexible lip front spoiler, and rear ducktail spoiler with Carrera script. This early production Carrera #32, (built August 1973) and not to be confused with the ROW units, is in superb condition and likely one of the most beautiful examples on the market today! It hails most recently from a prominent Maryland collection where it has been kept in a gorgeous, climate-controlled garage since arrival. It will come complete with original manuals & service books, factory tools, auxiliary tire compressor, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. The seller states that the CoA comes with this 911 so that should clear up any questions about the original color scheme. We’re also told a little of its history, but it sounds like there is not much known until around 2009. The original owner had it for only two years after which it moved around. What level of documentation goes with the period from 1976-2008 is left unsaid, but after that it appears to have found its way into a couple of collections, during which time it was restored. Given that we’re approaching ten years since that restoration this 911 still looks in very good shape. I imagine it hasn’t seen much road usage over those years, but we can hope whatever servicing it has received will be documented. There are surely plenty of questions to be answered, but overall this is a very nice looking and rare early Carrera Targa. If it indeed wears its originals colors then the asking price will be on the high side, but not egregiously so. If the colors are simply “period correct” as the ad mentions then I suspect the price will need to drop a good bit.


Raspberry 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

I suppose it should go without saying that this 911 will not appeal to everyone. But it’s very rare and very rare tends to get our attention. This is an unrestored Raspberry 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in California, with 71,500 miles on it. I have never seen Raspberry on any Porsche. It’s a ’70s color and finding it on a Carrera Targa doesn’t surprise me one bit. That it is on a Carrera Targa simply adds to the mystique though. I come across the 2.7 Carrera Coupes with decent regularity, but not the Targa. The Targa I don’t see often and while that would normally suggest we should expect a higher price, it doesn’t usually work out that way. The Targas generally are in less demand. The demand for this Raspberry-colored Targa may even be lesser still, but for the buyer really looking for a uniquely colored Carrera, I think you’ll find this one hard to pass up.

Chequered Flag International is pleased to offer this 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa in Raspberry (N8) with Black interior. 71,500 miles with one owner. Equipped with factory air conditioning. This is a US Carrera Targa. Chassis numbers run from 911541 – 001 to 0174. This is number 121 out of 174 built. Original matching engine (#6451817). Original owner stored it for 15 plus years, on 10/14 he gave it to European Autowerks in Palos Hills IL to get it up and running. The bill was around $13k – with receipts. It runs and drives nicely but I find the clutch heavy and 3rd gear whiny. The body is very straight and rust free with the exception of a couple of areas under the hood. These are the typically prone spots, they are localized, I’ve shown them in the photos. No books or tools. A U.S Carrera is a rare car, Raspberry is an exceedingly rare color. This is a good straight, honest, low mile example. It’s a good usable car but should be restored to achieve its potential. Comes with its original window sticker and Certificate of Authenticity. Inspections encouraged. All sales AS-IS. Sales tax and license fees due if delivered in California.

The seller has done a decent job of making clear the condition of this Targa. It isn’t pristine; in fact, it’s far from pristine. But it’s in reasonably good shape and has only had one owner. Normally we hope that one owner means there will be plenty of records and original documentation, but it doesn’t sound like that is the case here. However, it has had some recent work to bring it back to driveable condition after sitting for a number of years so it comes across as a decent candidate for restoration, and perhaps even over time an owner can slowly bring it back to glory.

The condition, lack of documentation, and probably the color are keeping bidding low. And by low I mean it’s yet to receive a bid even with the starting bid set at a very reasonable $42,500. A trip over to Chequered Flag’s site shows it listed for $64.5K. On the surface that’s not a bad price for a Carrera Targa in such a rare color, but given the necessary work I don’t know if it can sell at that price. It’s rare to come across a 911 like this though even if it is bright pink. We’ll have to see how those competing conditions play out.


1975 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

As interesting as they might be, some cars probably aren’t meant for eBay. I think this 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe may be one of those cars. The intriguing thing about this 911, which also happens to be the aspect about it that will take the most time to figure out, is that it has the body of the Porsche 930. While the ‘Turbo look’ would become a factory option on the 911 in the mid-80s, in 1975 this wasn’t the case. As such, this is said to be a dealer installed option requested at the behest of the first owner who was unable at the time to import the 1975 Turbo Carrera. In line with these desires, the engine is also said to be tuned, though exactly what that means isn’t made clear, and it has received upgraded brakes. That makes this 911 one of the first true Turbo-look 911s to be produced.

1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe

This is about as mid- to late-70s as a Porsche 911 gets. Bitter Chocolate over Tan with black trim and the Carrera script running down the sides. For a while now the mid-year 911s have been some of the least expensive classic 911s on the market, especially when compared to the long-hood examples that immediately preceded them. There have always been two exceptions to that rule: the Carrera 2.7 of the US market and the Carrera 2.7 MFI in the European market. It is that MFI Carrera that we see here and with prices for mid-year 911s slowly creeping up these models have set the bar for the heights these machines can reach. Mechanically similar to the ’73 Carrera RS Touring, the Carrera 2.7 MFI serves as an alternative for those who don’t have a spare million dollars lying around for a RS and the example we see here, a Bitter Chocolate 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe located in Atlanta, comes from the final year these models were produced. These would be the last of the mechanically fuel injected road cars that Porsche would build.

1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Coupe

First we looked at the Targa and now we will have a look at the Coupe. This Carrera epitomizes almost everything I enjoy about the style of ’70s cars. The color (Bitter Chocolate with Gold accents), the Cinnamon interior, the ducktail spoiler, and just the general feeling conveyed by this car fits so well. I even like the slightly chunkier looking tires. This 911 is period correct in all the right ways. Like the Carrera 2.7 Targa featured before it, this Carrera 2.7 Coupe, located in Alabama with 89,476 miles on it, won’t come cheaply, but it definitely presents as a rare and unique color combination that when maintained well should garner plenty of attention wherever it goes and show nice value as well.

1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Targa

I recently have been sifting through older Carreras finding those that looked like a nice air-cooled value mixed in with a few that were in excellent shape and commanded quite a bit more money. I’ll now step back in time a little further to a couple of the earlier 911s to wear that hallowed name. Other than the most modern examples, I have featured almost every Targa model that I can think of during my time here at GCFSB with the exception of the one we see here: a 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Targa located in Missouri with 81,571 miles on it. The Carrera 2.7 definitely is not the model to seek out by value hunters as they command values significantly higher than other mid-year 911s. Stylistically they deliver unique features referential of the previous year’s Carrera RS and epitomize what has become a popular look by those seeking to back-date modern Carreras. Added to all of that, a Carrera 2.7 Targa is incredibly rare to come across.

1974 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera – Brumos Racing MFI Conversion

This one is fun. Not that the other cars we feature aren’t fun, but there’s a little more going on with this 911 to provoke levels of interest that may rise above the norm. What do you do when you build the follow-up to a fantastic car, but have decided not to ship that new model to one of your important markets? Well, for Porsche it meant making use of your racing prowess, and team associations, to undertake a conversion that would transform a standard car into something far greater. Following upon the success of the 1973 911 Carrera RS, Porsche continued to produce a mechanically similar version of that car for the 1974 model year that differed only from its predecessor in its redesigned impact bumpers. However, the US market never was intended to receive that car, but rather received a Carrera that used the standard 2.7 liter engine found in the 911 and 911S produced at that time. The two models are generally distinguished by their injection with the European version known as the 911 2.7 Carrera MFI for its use of the Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection of the ’73 Carrera RS and the US model referred to as the 2.7 Carrera CIS utilizing the Bosch Continuous Injection System that Porsche used on the 911 up until the introduction of the 3.2 Carrera in 1984. All of which brings us to the car we see here. It appears that an early example of the 2.7 Carrera CIS was sent to Peter Gregg of Brumos Racing where they converted the engine to the MFI set-up used in the European Carrera. Presumably later in its life, the interior and suspension of the car also received attention to leave us with this: a vintage 911 both lightened and lowered that possesses one of the most iconic 911 engines Porsche produced during that period.
