Just when I thought I’ve seen everything, I see something new. It is probably pretty easy to see why I’m featuring this vehicle today, but it’s what it’s lacking that has me surprised. This is a 2015 Mercedes-Benz G550 6×4. Yes, a 6×4. It’s pretty crazy to think that a 6×6 G-Wagen is almost normal to me now, but a 6×4 is an entirely new way to get your six wheel kicks. From what I understand, this G started out as your normal G550, then had another rear end tacked on the end with an axle that isn’t connected to the driveshaft but the braking system is entirely functional. Inside, all the extra room from the extended body work gives you another row of seats and the regular capacity in the hatch area. Surprisingly, all this work looks pretty good and might even pass as a factory job if you are squinting hard enough. But of course, all this comes at what cost?
I know what you are saying. ”Another G-Wagen?” Yes, but if you saw the title and looked at the photo you can understand why. This is a 2016 G300 CDI 6×6. Yes, a G300 CDI, which means this thing is powered by the 3.0 liter OM642 V6 diesel engine and of course, it is a 6×6, too. These special Gs are called the LAPV (Light Armored Patrol Vehicle) 6.1 used for military service for countries around the world. It doesn’t look like much now, but typically these are outfitted to look something like this or this. This 6×6 has also been upgraded with Beadlock 37-inch tires with a centralized pressure system in cab. Just for good measure, it is possible to tow a trailer weighing up to 4400 pounds. How much? It is a good thing militaries have large budgets.
Another week, another G-Wagen. Last week it was the crazy G55 AMG limousine and the week before that it was the short wheelbase G500 for sale in the UK. Today, we have another short wheelbase G but as you might have noticed, this one has a little extra feature. This is a 1999 G500 Cabriolet that was federalized by Europa (read more here about them) for sale in New Jersey with a little over 65,000 miles. It’s a no-frills G outside of that slick power top that will make any Wrangler or Defender owner as jealous as can be. But the price, are you sitting down?
Last week I checked out a really cool short wheel base right hand drive G500 in the UK and explained that you can basically have a G-Wagen any way you want it. Well, today’s G is another way get your kicks and if you haven’t noticed, this one is quite a bit longer than the last G I checked out. This is a 2005 G55 AMG that has been stretched and of course, updated with the G63 bumpers, wheels and badges that seems to be all the rage now. The stretching sadly wasn’t a factory job and because of that I’m going to stop short of calling it a true Pullman and instead go with the more tradition term of limousine. Although this stretching job looks really well done, I do have a couple of questions and one big red flag.
I’ve looked at my fair share of Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens here. From the rusty 1985 280GE for $12,950 to the street-legal monster truck 2017 G550 4×4² for over $250,000, I’ve covered nearly all of them. They all make sense in one way or another as you can basically find a G to do anything you really need it to do. Need a military vehicle? Here is a 1991 230GE. How about a fire truck? Another 1991 230GE. Topless beach cruiser? I’ve got a 1992 300GD for you. But this 2001 G500 3-door for sale in Hampshire, England is a mystery to me and I wish I knew the full story. Let me explain.
As misunderstood and misused as they are, I love the G-Wagen. What started as a utilitarian military vehicle has now evolved into pieces of sheer opulence. One of those early examples of that decadence was the G55 AMG. Mercedes and AMG were throwing the supercharged M113 engine into anything with a Mercedes badge and, common sense be damned, they put it in the G-Wagen. At almost 470 hp and even crazier 516 ft·lb of torque, this G hits 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds. A mere 5.5 seconds in something that weighs over 5,500 pounds. Thank goodness for AMG brakes that come in the package, too!

First off, what a great use of the DVD function in the aftermarket headunit to show a scene with George Costanza in Seinfeld while shooting the photos for this G. I think the seller knew exactly what they were doing and had a little chuckle doing so. Speaking of the photos, these are outstanding. But they are basically all for naught when you write zero description in your listing. Seriously, this listing tells me nothing about what is going on with this G55. You spend the time and effort to go shoot all these photos and follow it up with nothing. This looks like a great W463, but I can’t assume that. I realize that if you are really serious you pick up the phone to call the seller to really dig into what this thing is all about, but it drives me nuts the lack of effort to sell something this expensive.…
Almost two months ago I checked out a 1991 G-Wagen that served Swiss Military well before passed on to civilian use for many more years of enjoyment and constantly explaining what the heck it is. Today’s Mercedes-Benz, and by Mercedes-Benz I mean Daimler-Steyr-Puch, is also a Swiss service vehicle. This one saw service with the Feuerwehr (fire department) in the small town of Stansstad in central Switzerland. From there, it looks like it ended up in the Netherlanders before finding a home with a collector in New Jersey. Unlike the Puch I checked out earlier, this 230GE isn’t a stripped-out spartan workhorse. It’s actually a nice place to be for a service vehicle.

Current owner is an avid collector of rare and unique vehicles and when he was contacted about about this particular G-Wagon he had to have it.
When you drive this vehicle, it is obvious to observed that it was fleet maintained as the motor and transmission shifts smooth between gears.
Steering and suspension also functions the way you would expect, and I personally would have no reservations about driving this vehicle daily for long distances.
Acceleration seems to be much improved over the Diesel model, but please don’t expect this vehicle to throw you back in your seat like a new Ferrari.
Very reliable vehicle.

Earlier this week I looked at a SL550 Mille Miglia 417 that was (dis)graced with matte black paint and red accents throughout. My argument was that it was an SL that no SL buyers wanted. I’m serious, AMG calls these the “Performance Studio Colors” which are “Bold and adventurous and have an iridescent shine, perfectly complementing the glossy black accents of the wheels and roof.” You have your choice between orange, purple, lime green, yellow or red. This 2015 is painted in Sunsetbeam Orange wasn’t just a special color you picked out, you had to drop an addition $20,000 for 20-inch AMG 5-spoke wheels, designo Black Nappa leather with color stitching, designo AMG carbon fiber trim, and AMG sport front seats.…
The Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² is one of the craziest creations to not only come from Mercedes-Benz but the car world in general. I would have liked to have been in the meeting at the Mercedes-Benz offices in Stuttgart when they mocked up the 4×4². But perhaps it would be even more crazy to have been in those same offices when they decided to build these things and sell them to the general public. The already unique G-Wagen had its ground clearance increased by nearly 8 inches and front track widened by more than 10 inches thanks to the wonders of portal axles. This of course was all to make room for 22-inch rims wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion ATR 325/55R22 tires that look like they belong touring the country at Monster Trucks shows rather than cruising down the street in your local (extremely wealthy) town. Now that these squared machines are starting to show up at a dealers like this one for sale in Florida, I had to dig a little deeper to check one out.

I have an affinity for vehicles that have hit the moon milestone (238,900 miles) while looking like they’ve done so with relative ease. For this 2003 G500, it has already hit the moon and is halfway home on the return trip. I think people have an irrational fear of higher mileage vehicles because they’ve either been with been with cars that didn’t age well or they’ve been told that higher mileage automatically means “bad”. There is some merit in that the more miles a vehicle has, the greater the risk of things failing, but I believe that you get out cars what you put in them — which a few exceptions, of course.
