The Porsche 928 is one of those cars that is fast becoming a pipe dream for armchair enthusiasts like myself. For years I’ve heard the nightmares people go through to keep these V8 sports cars running, stories which lead me to believe that these cars are either for the very rich or very brave. Even if I had another parking spot to enjoy this hobby I’m supposedly involved with, would something like this be worth the hassle? Whatever the case may be, my interest has been piqued once again with this Bamboo Beige 1981 Porsche 928.

This 928 is about as clean as they come from the used car factory. With only 1 Arizona owner from new, it is a true gem. All original paint, Porsche bamboo beige L523 and is is flawless. The photos do not do this car justice, but hopefully the HD video will. It was always stored in a climate controlled garage, covered and had the benefit of a windshield visor and tinted windows to preserve the interior. No expense was ever spared and it is apparent when driving this 5-speed manual 928. Timing belt, water pump and tensioner are fresh and have already been replaced several times over the course of this 928’s pampered life. The full service history is thorough and photographed below.

Looking over this 928, I find very little to fault with it. Sure, I don’t have as discriminating an eye as Andy over at flüssig magazine, but for the investment grade collector, this car appears to be quite the piece. It ticks all the right boxes: one owner, full service history, a fresh service and a life spent in the Southwest. The 5-speed manual gearbox is derided by some who say the automatic is more suited to this cruiser, but for those who want a more involved driving experience, it’s the preferred choice. The 928 is finally getting it’s fair shake in the collector car marketplace. Earlier examples like these in very good condition are not easy to come by, so a car like this will certainly be sought after for years to come.

Nice example, no body rub guards and phone dials. However it has the front and rear spoilers but it’s not an S model. In my opinion the spoilers detract from the original lines of the early cars. If I came across a 1978-1980 with no spoilers, no rub guards, phone dials and pasha interior I’d snatch it up. Then I’d have to sell my GTS 5 speed to make room.
Very beautiful car, spoilers or not. I like the early rear spoilers – they’re subtle enough. Loving that colour combo. I’d swap my 83SC for this car – such a nice early 928. Will be interesting to see how much this sells for. 928’s deserve their due in the collector market! My guess is they will skyrocket very shortly -2016 might be the year.
For years the 928 never really appealed, but over the last few it’s really grown on me. I especially like the bamboo color on this one – interior and exterior match really well. I agree the prices are set to sky-rocket – I like to keep my eye out for well priced examples locally, like this one (https://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/5356422729.html) but just don’t think I’ll take the plunge given my fleet is already bleeding me dry!
With the year ending, I want to thank all of you at GCFSB for once again providing a great daily read and pointing me towards cars to acquire and to dream about. Well done!
