The 528e is a bit of an odd duck. The product of the oil crisis of the late 70s and early 80s, this was essentially a gasoline engined car that attempted to mimic the frugality of a diesel, at a time when BMW was yet to bring a diesel engine to the US market (the e stands for “efficiency”). Powered by a 2.7 liter, de-tuned version of the inline-six cylinder M20 motor, what you got was a car that offered all the good looks of the E28 5-series, but with none of the performance to back it up. In other words, you bought this car to drive cheaply and slowly with a bit of German style and sophistication.

You can find plenty of these workhorses on Craigslist for not a lot of money. They usually turn up in worn out condition - which is not surprising, since most were used as commuters – frequently with automatic transmissions. This low mileage ’85 on the other hand looks to be in remarkably good shape, a real survivor in fact, and comes with a five speed manual gearbox. You won’t be winning any drag races in it, but at least that’ll help you wring out the miserly 121 hp on offer from the detuned six up front.
The condition on this one looks excellent, entirely befitting the very low 55k miles on the odometer. The diamond black paint looks great and accentuates the E28’s classic design which, even when marred by US-spec diving board bumpers, looks suitably handsome, in a utilitarian sort of way. There are no cracks in the dash and the black leather interior appears to be in fantastic shape. No details are given about mechanicals or the state of electric accessories; a thorough inspection is called for to ensure it’s as good beneath the surface as it appears up top.
A nearly $6k buy-it-now price may seem a bit steep for something so old and so slow, however charming it may be. This car is probably ideal for someone who wants a nice condition E28 to daily drive, but whose budget won’t quite stretch to one of the fancier and faster models. I imagine it has lots of highway miles ahead of it.
