The E23 7-series is already a bit special, for two main reasons. First, as I mentioned when I wrote up a 733i a couple of weeks ago, you don’t tend to see them on the roads anymore. Second, the beautiful design, which shares a number of features with the shark-nosed E24 6-series coupe, matches anything put out by Mercedes-Benz in the same era in terms of elegance and style. That is not something that could always be said about BMW products, even if they were more fun to drive than their counterparts from Stuttgart. But this E23 is even more special, since it’s a gray market 745i.  Not available in the US, this high-performance model represented the top of the E23 lineup in Europe and came with a turbocharged version of the 3.4 liter inline six cylinder M30 engine (here called the M106) and a host of luxurious and high-tech (for the time) accessories. Very few of these come onto the market, and rarely do they do so in the kind of condition shown here.

In turbocharged form this engine put out about 250 hp from the factory, making for a fast and powerful highway cruiser. The condition of this example looks to be outstanding: the arctisblau paint gleams over a mint-condition black leather interior, the brightwork is shiny and in good order, and all panels appear to be original and laser straight. Which is all to be expected given the ultra-low 33k miles on the odometer. The seller notes working A/C, power windows and seats. A VIN check also shows a sunroof and reveals that those power seats are heated, front and rear.
It’s not clear where the reserve is set but I suspect the seller will be asking for strong money, and that this car will ultimately end up in the hands of a collector. Such a shame: if I had the money, I’d love to use this car to storm up and down the highway.

Man … this would’ve been the dad’s car in 80s teen movies — the mom got the 5000tqw.
Nice car! It will be interesting to see where bidding winds up.
That engine bay!
The seller will hold onto a car forever until he gets the money he wants. I follow the seller, he specializes in survivor American iron so I wonder if he knows much about German cars. That said, the seller always orders and replaces the little things broken or missing on cars, like trim pieces, so I think you could trust you are getting a great example here.
And yes, I would drive this car until the wheels fell off.
