I’ve previously done deep dives on the Coupe GT, and in particular the 1987.5 ‘Special Build’ models:
1986-7 were transitional years at Audi though, as the B3 model was introduced and the company seemed to just throw the parts bin at random models. My ’86 GT, for example, is not a Special Build or a Commemorative Design model, yet it has a digital dashboard. The same is true of today’s 1987; it is not a Special Build, but has one of Audi’s indiscriminately placed digidash clusters. For good measure, and to make things extra hard, it’s also got a body-color rear spoiler, which was a signature of the Special Build and Commemorative Design cars, but not offered on standard GTs. Yet a peek under the hood reveals the 110 horsepower 2.2-liter KX inline-five. Let’s take a look:

It’s a tidy segue to move from the Scirocco 16V to the GT. Today’s car appears to be Zermatt Silver Metallic, and it’s claimed to have only one owner from new. Is that believable? Sure. There are still ‘little old lady’ story cars floating around out there to be snapped up. This car appears to have been parked at some point, and it looks like it sat under a tree. Close inspection reveals rear-end damage that probably explains the rear spoiler being painted, and a look under the hood suggests that this car has far more than 40,000 miles.
Condition is on the poor side overall though it is certainly salvagable. There are some missing or broken NLA parts, and the running condition is not disclosed; nor is function of the aforementioned digidash. All in all, the asking price of nearly $5k is therefore exceptionally hard to grasp, especially considering the automatic transmission. You’re much better off spending an extra 2k on the Scirocco here. Were this a running 5-speed Special Build that needed a refurb, the conversation would be different.
