In the 1980s, if you had the means and wanted a bit of flash, there were some terrific icons of style to choose from. Mercedes-Benz had the R107 SL. Porsche had the 928. Audi had a slew of Quattro models following the Ur Quattro. And BMW had the 6 series coupe. Known affectionately as “the shark,†the E24 6 series had a lengthy run from the mid 1970s through 1989. A number of variants came and went, but the ultimate was this car, the M6. Packing a 256 bhp inline-6, the aggressive lines of this coupe were further enhanced with larger wheels, spoilers and in some areas, monochrome trim. This 1987 Cinnabar Red M6 for sale in Washington state has under 100,000 miles on the clock and is presented as original.

It’s curious that the M5 and M6 of the late 1980s are fetching less money than the M3, given these were the top dogs in the M range. But perhaps it speaks to the sheer awesomeness of the original fast 3. Whatever the case may be, now is a great time to pounce on one of these classic E24s, as they have already started to see an increase in value over the last couple years.

I would rather spend my money on a nice M635. Better looking, 300 lbs lighter w/30 more hp (that is a ~20% better power to weight ratio for those keeping score), no problematic and bulky rear a/c, more highway friendly 3.73 LSD rear axle, less leather to dry out and shrink, more color choices. If a US M6 were my only option it would be an 88 with the better integrated world bumpers.
I guess one of the reasons sharks like this don’t command big $$$ right now is probably due to their “under the radar” existence. The E30 is so in your face with the flared fenders & rear deck wing that it really stands out when next to any other E30.
The M6 next to a 635Csi is tougher to discern to the regular folk…
Also some of the quirky things that ALWAYS break on the E24, rear a/c, rear suspension, TRX tires on those rims that cost stupid $$$ and don’t give you modern day grip….
this car is a bit nicer in the sense that it doesn’t have the usual Lotus White interior that most Cinnabars came with….
also as ^^^Paul pointed out…MY89 is the year to have…
