The BMW E39 M5 is a decent performance bargain at the moment, offering big V8 power and grace for a fraction of what they cost when new. However, a good one will run you well into the $20,000 range, which, depending on your budget, can be considered less than a bargain depending on budget specifics. However, move down one notch in the E39 hierarchy from the M5 we featured yesterday and you’ll find this car: the 540i. While it’s 4.4 liter V8 produces less power than the M5, you still can have your fun with the 6-speed manual and enjoy a near similar V8 soundtrack from the exhaust. This 540i for sale in Florida has clocked just under 100,000 miles and has some M5 add ons that will have you doing a double take to figure out exactly what it is.

This is the real thing, my favorite vehicle in inventory, really. This is what I believe BMW is all about. Raw power no excuses, 4.4L 282 hp V8 engine with 325 torque attached to a 6 speed manual transmission. Perfect acceleration, handling, and all that in the comfort of a luxurious sedan. What else can you ask for? If you are a BMW E39 V8 fan, you probably know that they are getting harder and harder to find, especially in good condition.

A 5er like this could be the performance bargain in the E39 lineup currently, as a car like this will run you under $10,000 typically. I’ve always been a fan of the deep inset wheels on these 6-speed manual variants, as they fill out the corners quite nicely on this design. For someone in need of a highway cruiser with some space that will get you there fast, but that allows you to enjoy a bit of the twisty bits, there are few better used alternatives out there.
