The 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V we featured earlier in the month is now up for auction, still showing about the same low miles on the clock. Why sit there and sulk that Volkswagen won’t bring back the Scirocco when you could have an equally cool vintage one like this?

The below post originally appeared on our site October 5, 2014:
There’s always those few cars from childhood that we remember yet for one reason or another, its rare that you come across them anymore. Such is the case with the Volkswagen Scirocco. I can’t remember the last time I spotted one on the street. To find one in good condition seems all the more impossible. Yet here comes a very mint 1987 Scirocco 16V from our reader Matt with under 67,000 miles on the clock. They don’t come much nicer than this, folks.
Year: 1987
Model: Scirocco 16V
Engine: 1.8 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 66,402 mi
Price: $7,300 Buy It Now
1987 VW Scirocco 16-Valve with original 66.4 kmi. $7,500. All original panels, glass and paint (exception the bumpers, which were re-sprayed prior to my ownership). There is absolutely no rust. Tornado Red, 5-Speed, Cloth interior, non-sunroof, manual crank windows and the air blows cold. (No charging requiredïŠ). Car starts and runs amazing and pulls willingly to redline.
The Story: The car is an original Northwest car (Washington/Oregon) and I am the third owner. I purchased it last year from a dealer here in Portland so I don’t have any history other than Carfax and some limited maintenance paperwork. I have owned 7 Sciroccos over the last 20+ years of various vintages and conditions and can honestly say this the closest I have come to experiencing what they must have been like new. I purchased the car shortly after arriving here after seeing it for sale on Germancarsforsaleblog.com and I had to own it. During the last year I have managed to drive it about 100 miles, change the oil, and wash it and wax it. I thought I was going to adopt it as my daily driver, but I am reluctant to put the miles on it and am not enjoying watching it sit in the garage.
While it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, the time has come to sell it and start saving for a new one in 2016 (fingers crossed). I have done my best to describe the good and what I know needs attention.
I am happy to answer any questions talk specifics if needed. Feel free to call/txt/email. I live in SW Beaverton OR.No joy rides and please don’t waste my time and yours with low ball offers.
The Good:
• All original (except Stereo)
• No known or apparent accident damage
• Perfect Dash
• Perfect Headliner
• Original window Sticker/books
• 2-keys
• 68kmi Carfax verified original miles
• Absolutely rust free
• No Leaks (that I can tell. . .I don’t have a lift however there are not puddles/drips where it is parked)
• Runs Amazing
• Original Bosal Exhaust (perfect balance, not too raspy)
• Original Teardrop rims (good shape, but not perfect. Clearcoat cleans up but is starting the check)
• Tires(Toyo’s) are 70% tread left
• Paint 7 out of 10 (Note: 16V body kit is an off color red (not apparent in pics) and the hood and roof are starting to fail with some minor burn (buffer) marks. The hood is original, but may have been repainted when new. For those that don’t know, VW didn’t apply clear coat so keeping them red is an ongoing battle.
• US Headlights and Bumpers
• AC Blows Cold
• Heater Blows Hot
• Most gaskets/seals/weather stripping is good shape
• Power mirrors work
• Shift light works ïŠNeeds Attention: This is my list of “to-do’s”
• Random Spark plug wires
• Mirror housings are faded (not sure why they painted the bumpers and not these)
• US Headlights and Bumpers
• Suspension is OEM and a bit soft
• 16V antennae needs replacing
• Back deck lift cord missing
• Rip in Drivers seat
• Dents (in particular driver’s door, tried to show in pics. Likely a candidate for paint less dent removal.)
• Passenger CV Joint needs replacing
• Trunk lock gasket
• Exhaust rattles at start-up, but once car is warm it stops
The owner of this Scirocco spotted this very car on our site last year and has done a good job preserving it. This is one of those cars on my bucket list, as I’ve always been a fan of the Giugiaro penned sheet metal. Volkswagen claims they don’t want to sell the current Scirocco in the US for fear of impacting GTI sales. For those seeking something a little bit different, however, it seems to me like a no brainer. The time is ripe, then, to snap up what few good examples of these Scirocco 16Vs are left.

Cool find and amazing that the seller mentions finding it on this very blog!
@Paul – maybe to help future transactions & in the name of powerful archiving you guys could put the VIN (when available) in every listing in that first: mileage, price, etc section. Making it a Google hyperlink so it could be one click searched would be a double bonus.
This blog is often proof that these posts have historic value later on (especially since ebay purges their history and it isn’t searchable) not limited to, but including, when vehicles come up for sale multie times.
On a tangent, I really appreciate when sellers put in a little effort & honesty and list a “needs/concerns” list. Hey, every vehicle needs something…I’m much less likely to pursue listings with no flaws mentioned (ie most used car dealers).
Ry, we talked about it a few times – there were some questions about whether we would be legally involving ourselves to closely with the car if I remember – but Paul could correct me.
This still is a great example from when I wrote it up last year; I love hearing how folks buy these cars. Perhaps we should also adopt the “Alumni” tag when we re-feature a car. It’s the second one this past week – the 500SEC AMG was also a repeater.
Correct Carter, for now, we are steering clear of including VIN #s in the posts (unless stated in the seller’s text) for legal concerns. We’ll keep doing our best to track and follow up on the cars we feature, however!
