1988 BMW M5

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 12.28.32 PM

The E28 M5 appreciation I speculated on last week appears to be spreading. Not too long ago, a good-condition, middling mileage 1988 M5 would go for low-to-mid teens; it now looks like they could soon cross the $20k threshold, a ceiling recently shattered by “average” E30 M3s. Personally, this is a nice reminder as my M5 comes up on some gut-wrenchingly expensive transmission work that these are special cars. Going into it, I mostly planned on it not depreciating any further, but appreciation is a nice thought. Today’s 155k-miler doesn’t have a lot of info in the add, but inside and out it shows signs of love and care. Does that make it worth a few tanks of gas shy of $20k? We shall see.

The available BBS RCs are a popular choice, but I’d go with the originals. After hearing of many receiving engine rebuilds around 200k, I thought that was the rule of thumb, but I have recently learned that many go well beyond 300k miles. You can only really find out by trying though, which can be an expensive risk to take. Either way, this is a very pretty M5. If you’re interested in the howling S38 in a four door sleeper, it’s looking like the time to buy before they go up anymore. I’d offer $15k on this and go from there.

ohhh I like this….I ma not surprised at all that these are going up in price and doing so at big jumps…
makes alot of sense when you think about it…
only one year of production and even though numbers vary depending on whom you speak too or what article you read…LOL….they made ALOT less of these than E30 M3’s.
problem is that many of these have fallen into the hands of people who could not/did not maintain them properly as the S38 ain’t inexpensive especially if you defer maintenance.
IF this all checks out, service records of some sorts are available, and the PPI comes back good…
I would be good for this at 16to18k.
that said….anyone want to buy an E34 M5????….LOL
cause I can’t come home with this without making some room….wife would pop an artery.
