1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC

$_57

It’s unfortunate that Volkswagen has held firm in its refusal to bring the Mk3 Scirocco stateside. They feel the GTI is adequate to fill the sports car gap in the US market, last filled by this car the Corrado, since it’s exit from the US market in 1994. The choice for lower priced sports coupes is a bit slim these days, especially if you’re in the market for a German manufactured one. Go back two decades, however, and you’ll arrive at the end of the Corrado production run, which found the newly introduced VR6 engine slotted under the hood. The Corrado SLC, as it was dubbed, solved many of the teething issues inherent in the G-lader supercharged 1.8 liter engine that preceded it. This Corrado with 112,000 miles on the clock is largely original with records stretching back over a decade.

1992 Volkswagon Corrado VR6 5 speed, Flash Red w/ black leather interior no sunroof with 112,500 miles in excellent, original condition Florida Car. Clean Car Fax Report and includes original window sticker. $23K car when new!

Extremely well maintained original. Have all receipts since Dec. 2002 w/ 69K miles. Don’t have first owners receipts. I’ve owned the car a very short time (6 months). Bought it for my son who loves VW’s, but would rather have a different one.

Drivetrain:
2.8L VR6 5 speed with 112,500 original miles. Engine runs strong and transmission shifts smooth. Had timing chain, tensioners, accumulator, oil cooler, hoses, belts, thermostat, etc. replaced ($2,400 work) done at 92K in May 2007. Previous owner liked to work on the car himself and said he replaced the water pump, heater core, plugs and wires, rear seal, oil pan gasket, throw out bearing and axles, spare tire, Bilsteins and Neuspeed springs and valve job. Based on what I’ve inspected, it looks like he did this work.

Brakes work great with newer front pads and rotors. New Battery. Tires have plenty of tread. There’s a receipt for mounting four new ones 15K miles ago.

Body/Interior:
No sunroof car
Flash Red exterior w/ paint in great shape. Shines like new. Looks like the hood and front bumper may have been repainted but matches and aligns perfectly. Small half dime size rust spot in typical area below the rear window. Not all that noticeable. Would not cost much to fix. No dents on the car at all, a few paint chips and the rear bumper could use a repaint. Underside and wheel wells look like new. Wheels are BBS original to the car. Rear spoiler raises and lowers as it should. New windshield

Leather seats and door panels look great for a 20 year old vehicle with no rips. Black carpet is in great shape, not holes or stains. New OEM oil/volt gauges installed by previous owner using 1993 gauge pod. Looks good. Aftermarket Pioneer receiver with new Pioneer front speakers replaced the ACTIV system. Seat glides replaced on both sides. Trunk is immaculate

Electronics:
Everything on the car works except the rear wiper and the AC needs charging. It blew ice cold 2 months ago. Vehicle has been incredibly well maintained and looks and drives like it, however, it is 20 years old. Sold as-is.

We featured a 1992 Corrado SLC with an automatic gearbox that sold for $6,600 last December. That car covered about 10,000 more miles, so a few hundred more for a car with the more desirable manual gearbox seems reasonable. With prices of clean E36 M3s rising a bit, it may give a car like the Corrado SLC a bit more breathing room in terms of value. However, another German sports car has stayed fairly stable in the used car marketplace and can be had for similar money, if not much more: the Porsche 944. So will it be the rear-drive balance or sonorous exhaust note of the legendary VR6 that will hook you?

Great car — loved these when I was in high school. Would drool over the original G50 versions when my sister’s Golf was in for service.
