1994 Porsche 928GTS – REVISIT

$_4 (1)

The 1994 Porsche 928GTS that Andy from flüssig magazine featured back in January is back up for sale, with a Buy It Now of $75,000. The 928GTS is the ultimate expression of Porsche’s long lived GT car, and with the 5-speed manual gearbox it makes it all the more desirable as a collector vehicle.

Andy McCulley from flüssig magazine has been lending his expertise on all things Porsche 928 to us here at GCFSB. This is his first post as a guest contributor, so sit back while he walks us through this 928GTS equipped with a 5-speed manual.

Here we have a lovely 1994 Porsche 928 GTS 5-speed. The crème de la crème of the 928 lineup. Although not the slightly more desirable ’95 GTS, ’94 models have been known to fetch a pretty penny when in mint condition. After all, there are absolutely no differences between a ’94 and ’95 GTS other than a slight change in the VIN to indicate the year difference. Furthermore, this example is one of just four known Iris Blue ’94 GTS models and is still with the original owner.

Located in Las Vegas, the owner claims that this example has been driven daily since new and there is certainly evidence to support this claim. While the exterior appears nice in the pictures, the owner states that it has been repainted. Anyone interested in this car would certainly want to have a thorough inspection done to validate that the repaint was done properly. One item to note is the apparent “rippling” in the trim surrounding the passenger side rear window. This may be somewhat illusory thanks to a reflection, but I would certainly recommend asking the owner about it.

The interior is the most salient disappointment, as the steering wheel appears to be either a loss or just in need of a serious deep cleaning, and the dashboard has a few major cracks. The carpet appears to be in decent condition with the exception of the piece on the drivers’ side door panel and the floor mats, which appear to be faded. There is also a crack in the bezel around the shifter, and the ashtray appears to be in rough condition. Perhaps with a thorough detailing this car would appear more enchanting to potential buyers.

1993 Porsche announces no more 928 sales. I traded in my ’87 for a ’93 and they again announced no more after 1995. In fact sales were discontinued in 1995. In early ’97 I was contacted by Mr. Ackerman at Gaudin Porsche and advised that he had found the last three GTS cars available at Porsche North america that had been used by the technicians to answer questions from dealers. Each was a 1994. I took the Pearl Blue version. The car has been driven in the desert from that time on. Seats have been covered and are in excellant condition. Carpets are in same condition. Upper edges of door panels show wear and should be replaced if a collector. Dash has been covered but has a crack above the pod. Rear panel of one side near rear of side window cracking. The wheels could be refinished if a collector.

The auto has been consistently maintained, including regularly scheduled oil and other maintenance by either Gaudin Porsche or Trophy Performance in Las Vegas, NV by Tod Trimble and Jim Deitz now both of Trophy. If replacement was required, it was replaced. No expense has been spared. Radiator, water pump, fans toothed belt and the last new Porsche gear shift knob and leather boot recently replaced. The car is in very, very good condition and everything operates as it should. IT WAS A DRIVER, driven by a little old Lawyer in Vegas but parked outdoors at work as we never added covered parking to our lot. Always garaged at home. Repainted in factory color because of the Vegas sun. I am sure that Mr. Trimble will confirm the condition of the car and can advise on cost of making a colletor car of this DRIVER if that is your wish. Key fob with lifetime key protection transfered with the vehicle. As an avid hot rod builder and driver I find I no longer use this beautiful car as much as I should. However, that does not mean I will give this car away. I would rather drive it until the wheels fall off. When I bought it, I said I would never buy another new car unless I liked it as much. I have yet to buy another new car. I have had four 928’s in my lifetime and there is no other car to match them for in town and highway use.

In case you don’t believe the hype this car WILL do 180 MPH I’ve only done it one=ce, but I had to know! In researching the stats on these (never thought to do it before) this appears to have been one of the first 88 1994 GTS’s built for 1994 year. I am learning more every day…a guy who knows his stuff says this car is the 26th car made for the US and one of only three made in Pearl Blue. Getting even more rare, folks!

As-is, this car appears as though it would make a good driver. However, if it could be purchased for a reasonable price (and given the rarity and desirability of the 928 GTS) perhaps it would be worth restoring to showroom condition. Just a rough estimate off the top of my head to address all of the previously mentioned lackluster items and the inevitability of some unknown issues is $15,000. It is difficult to place a value on this GTS, as 1994 5-speeds don’t come up for sale very often and there remain many unknowns about this car. The ad is not particularly detailed and pictures of the undercarriage, engine bay, paint and option code decals, spare tire compartment and tool kit are not provided. Assuming all of these areas are in good condition, I estimate that the car is worth somewhere between $40,000 to $50,000.

Good assessment, I agree. Cannot understand why there are 3 or 4 pics of the cargo area and rear seats and none of the engine compartment. Unless the intake is flaking off and the GTS intake tube foam is disintegrating (possible/likely on both counts….) It’s an early ’94, likely has the R1 connecting rods in the motor so that’s a bit of a crapshoot, and no commentary on oil consumption, which is a big issue with GTSs.

That said, this is one of 3 Iris Blue 5-speeds, all with classic Gray interior. I was expecting bidding to flatline with the addition of the dash/pod crack pics (where in the world is a replacement set of airbag dash and pod in Classic Gray going to be sourced??) and agree that it could have been presented better. But then anyone willing to consider it knows exactly what it is and what it would take to properly recondition it. I hope it makes $50K, but I think $38-42K is more realistic.

Upwards of ten shades of gray, all conflicting, none of them attractive. Why, Porsche, why?

And what’s up with blue with gray? North vs south? I never get this combination.

I heard that a person’s ph is what destroys a steering wheel, has anyone else also heard that? And that is predicated on having clean hands, since food and all that would destroy it before ph would. And yet … there are real slobs who must have ph that is placebo to the leather in their cars, because of all people, their wheels do not degrade like this. It is akin to people with a certain mouth ph who have horrible oral hygiene and yet no cavities. And vice versa.

The interior appears to be filthy! Ashtray has ashes indicating a smoker, which may explain the discoloration on the steering wheel as well.

928 is always the kind of car in GCFS that I will give a second look. This one is an unfortunately case. Looking at the pictures at eBay, to me, the interior seems to be transferred from another donor car. It is all evidence looking at the trim around the sun roof on the headliner, padding around the seats, etc. I suspect putting back all together with a proper restoration is north of $30K (new interior, paint, and engine compartment detailing). $75K is a sky high figure. I wonder if there is anyone paying that price for a GTS.
