Mercedes gets all the attention for producing some unstoppable diesel sedans and making them available in the US for the better part of a decade. BMW only brought its oil-burning straight-six to the US for 2 years, but it got the benefit of coming in the sharp E28 5-series. Of the few 524tds I’ve seen on the road, most have been beat survivors, still chugging away in spite of less-than-attentive owners. This example, however, may be the best one out there, and certainly the cleanest I’ve seen. Silver on bottle caps looks as good as ever, and the blue cloth interior has held up better than just about any E28’s leather. This 524td has had the same owner since 1987 and looks ready to be classy, comfortable, and decently efficient transportation for another 30 years and 100k miles.

This is an original and very well preserved 1986 BMW 524td Turbo Diesel, which has covered only 173,00 Kilometers (107,500 Miles) since new. It was originally sold in Vancouver, BC and it has had two owners only – the second one since 1987. The car is currently registered in British Columbia, Canada. This unusual and rare BMW is powered by smooth and quite powerful 2.4L 6 Cylinder motor, very economical. It handles great. No visible Rust!! As it can be seen from the photographs, it is in quite good, well-preserved condition. Very rare car sold in North America only in 1985 and 1986.
The interior is very clean, no cracks on the dash. All electrical accessories work – power windows, mirrors, sunroof, climate control with ice cold AC. It drives great.

The 528e I wrote up last month ended up selling with no reserve for $2,400, setting a new record (in my non-scientific book) for clean E28 steals – I thought it’d go for twice that. A no-reserve snag like that is probably an anomaly, but doesn’t bode well for this Canadian’s $6,500 Buy-It-Now. I’d rather have a 524td over the 528e for the rarity and diesel coolness if all other variables were the same, but for now this looks like the more expensive option. Despite the cleanliness, it looks like the seller will have to come down a couple grand if he wants to move it any time soon.
