1994 Porsche 968

Front-engined Porsches seem to have their own following, especially when it comes to the various 4-cylinder models produced throughout the ’80s and early ’90s. Beginning in 1976 with the 924, these sports coupes replaced the 914 as Porsche’s entry-level model and remained in the lineup for nearly 2 decades under the guise of the 944 and then the 968. In its naturally aspirated trim, a 968 like the one featured here housed a 3.0 liter inline-4 delivering 236 hp to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. Capable performers, due to their reasonable weight and excellent balance, these 4-cylinder Porsches have remained of interest to enthusiasts everywhere as a track car or even as an alternative to the 911. The car we have here is a low-mileage Guards Red 1994 Porsche 968 located in Illinois.

This extremely clean One Owner Porsche 968 in an ever popular Porsche Red with Black interior. The 968 took place of the 944. With just over 30,000 miles this car is very rare for the miles and condition. This car has been stored for the past 10 years in a climate controlled facility. Very few 968’s in the color combination of Red with the Black interior are available.

The 968 has nonetheless carved out its own niche in the hearts of enthusiasts. This is likely due to the 968’s unique combination of speed and practicality, and low production numbers.

The 968 was Porsche’s last new front-engined vehicle (of any type) before the introduction of the Cayenne SUV. The 968 has more power, more refinement, distinctive looks, and a cachet that’s rooted in its rarity. Fewer than 4,500 were built for the U.S. market before production ended in 1995, divided nearly evenly between Coupes and Cabriolets. They were hugely expensive when new–the car sold for more than $60,000 in 1992, the equivalent of $100,000 in today’s dollars

The pictures aren’t the best resolution so it’s somewhat difficult to gauge how everything looks on this car, but from appearances it’s in fairly good shape. The interior appears very well maintained, which brings hope that the exterior is in similarly excellent condition. Also, that appears to be a corded car phone, which is neat. All-in-all a pretty good looking 968 and with a 6-speed manual, it’s sure to provide plenty of driving fun. The asking price strikes me as quite a bit high, but Porsche hasn’t produced a front-engine coupe since ceasing production of both the 928 and 968 in 1995, so there aren’t a ton of options available with low mileage and in good condition.

Uh, $60,000 in 1992? Both my dad’s and my own ’94 968s stickered around $44K new. If he believes they were $60K in ’92 then that might explain the overly optimistic asking price. Nice car, and I dearly miss my 968, but I don’t miss it that much. This one even has the standard 16″ wheels, not even the optional 17s or the far more special M030 suspension.

I love 968s and owned one for quite a while. That said…

$39K is preposterous. Maybe if it had 3,000 miles. Guards Red over tan is very common and red/black is not too rare. If it was some unique color such as Amazon Green or Iris Blue with a deviated tan/black interior… And LSD, and 17″ wheels, and M030 suspension then maybe it would be rare and more valuable.

This is a solid $25,000 car priced $15,000 too high.

Like the others said, quite high for the specification. While 30k miles is very low, it’s just not $40k special. Even with 17″ wheels, M030, and a more interesting color, I don’t think it would reach that price.

Also, the 968 had 240 hp from the factory, not 286.
