Economy and luxury. Two mutually exclusive terms, right? Well, Mercedes-Benz split the difference fairly well in the mid-1990s with the W202 C Class, specifically, the base model, 4-cylinder C220 model. Superseding the 190E, the C class came in two flavors in the US, initially, in 2.2 liter four cylinder and 2.8 liter six cylinder trim. This C220 for sale comes to us from our friends at Evolve Motors in Chicago and is quite possibly the best one that you can currently buy.

As the former owner of the model that followed this, a 1998 C230, I have to say it’s one of my most favorite cars I’ve ever owned. Not surprising, then, that the C holds the record of the longest ownership period by yours truly (a little over 6 years). Even compared to my 2007 C230 Sport, there was just something honest about the W202. It wasn’t flashy, it wasn’t fast, but it went about its business and didn’t ask for much in return. Similar, then, to my father’s 1992 190E 2.6, which was perhaps my favorite of all Mercedes that passed through our family. To find a clean, four cylinder Benz of this vintage is near impossible today, so when they come around, it’s worth jumping on them. My friend who bought my 1998 model has clocked over 200,000 miles on his and it still runs like a top. This car, then, has plenty of life left in it.

Oops! The Ebay link goes to the candy purple 930 that has had so much attention here!
I want to know more about this auction and the forum’s thoughts on these cars because I just purchased my recently departed 93-year old aunt’s 2003 C240 with 45,000 miles. Like the author, I agree: my car isn’t flashy, it’s not fast, but it is tight and competent – almost simple – AND FUN. I am thinking I will sell the 2010 Jag XF Premium (400 hp V8) to keep the Merc as a daily driver.
Any other owners out there?
Wow – a year unsold, that’s a pretty high cost of selling!
Also, those Lexus commercials this time of year with the bows on the cars make me want to throw something at my tv each time…like the market for people that give cars as gifts for Christmas is this large?! lol
How much would it cost them to straighten out the star on the hood and put a d*mn logo on top of the shifter for the photographs? And the same medicinal photos….1 year sitting like that? They couldn’t learn to use filters on Instagram or something?
It’s pretty solid looking, though. Hope it finds a nice home.
Accident on the carfax. Been sitting there for over a year. Price drop from $8999 to $6999. Its a $3500 car to me, keep the bow.
You would be shocked at how many people buy a car for someone’s holiday gift, and ask for a huge bow.
@Ry – You are spot on about the Lexus commercials! I often wonder if the only attention they get each year is from people making fun of them. Glad i’m not alone!
@HOward S, IF this is just a $3,500.00 why would this not be a great buy? Not rabble rousing, just an honest question.
Is a supposed year of inactivity that problematic? What other $3-4000 car would be the same “value?”
I think its a buy at $3500. I dont think as much of it at the 7 grand they want. There could be all sorts of things wrong with it from sitting around. Especially given its a 20 year old car.
