If you look at my vehicle history prior to my current vehicle, everything has been German. However, after years of flying the flag for the Fatherland, I’ve found myself wanting just a bit more. Something different. For years I took Saab for granted but when they finally closed up shop a few years ago, I shed a tear. Saabs were both obscure and sensible, with sometimes a heavy helping of performance. Such is the case with this 1997 9000 Aero for sale in New Jersey. While I was a bit saddened to scroll through the ad and find out it was equipped with an automatic, it’s a rare instance that you see one of these Q-ships in such great nick. This car represents the final year for the Aero, a model that featured a color-keyed body kit and spoiler, heavily bolstered Recaro seating, sport suspension and special 16 inch alloys. This automatic equipped example keeps the standard turbocharger for an output of 200 bhp, while manual equipped Aeros had a larger turbo capable of producing 225 bhp.

If you ask me, the 9000 Aero still looks good 20 years on. Too many cars these days follow a “me too” approach to styling, which is why I prefer the slightly quirky profile of this 5-door hatchback. Not only that, this car has a cargo space that some SUVs and estates could only dream of. If this 9000 was equipped with the 5-speed manual gearbox and more powerful engine, I could maybe see stretching to the asking price here. Given this is an automatic, however, I tend to think the ask is a bit optimistic. This car definitely fills a niche for the person who wants a bit more space but eschews your typical SUV or estate car. The advertising at the time this car was new was certainly spot on: “Find your own road.”

Something is marred between the front seat belt clips?
These are fantastic cars – I bought a used 5 speed with just under 100k kms and drove it to around 230.000 kms- and still miss it when I see another. With the great suspension, these absolutely incredible sculpted seats and wonderful high-torque low rev-engine, they made for a truly excellent long-distance driver. I routinely used it between the UK and Austria (a good 1500 kms / 900 miles) in straight trips and always arrived relaxed. Gas mileage was also impressive for such a big and powerful car. And as Paul mentions – cargo space, with back seats up or down, is far larger than any non-estate car I’ve owned since.
Would love to own one of these again, but most seem to be scruffy now – and it would have to be the 5 speed.
