1999 BMW M Coupe

I know it may seem blasphemous to say, but I get a sense that the new BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe are for those who like to play Madden 2015 in the basement rather than get out on a field and toss the football around on a crisp autumn day. I’m not sure about you readers, but I’m a more tactile person, which makes the original BMW M Coupe the choice for me when it comes to the Ultimate Driving Machine. This Evergreen M Coupe for sale in California is one of under 30 produced and has covered a little over 73,000 miles.

Evergreen is a love it or hate it color. I’m a fan, as it reminds me of the vivid colors Porsche offered in the 1990s, whereas today, it’s hard to get such uniqueness unless you pay out the nose for it through a specialty program such as BMW Individual. Even then, you can be limited to what your heart desires. It’s no secret M Coupes are becoming more and more valuable. The price here is a bit strong considering the mileage and the fact it isn’t a later, S54 engined variant. Sure the color is rare, but may not be to everyone’s liking. Somewhere around the low to mid $20,000 range is probably a tad more realistic in terms of value.

I like the exterior color but not the inclusion of the color inside. Looks like a bad comic book character outfit.

I think they’re doing some filter or processing to tone down the color, if you google “evergreen m roadster,” for example – you get stuff that looks like almost like bright seafoam green….not the pseudo steel grey-green of these pics.

The interior is the similarly confusing to me – some pics look like grey/black 2 tone leather, but I’m pretty sure it’s evergreen/black 2-tone.

I know everyone poo poo’s the s52 engine but if you plan to drive it not bubble wrap it it is the more civilized choice. Same torque curve just a little less top end with no valve adjustments every 10 k. Total track rat!

I know this car is noted as one of the ultimate driver’s cars, but it would need to be kept under a car cover at all times so I could not look at it. The clownshoe reference is flattering this design!

I would prefer the Z4 Coupe. I have read it’s a better handing chassis (is that true?) and you can get a low mileage example for the same price or less.

Rene, I had an advanced student with a mostly stock Z4 M Coupe a few years ago. It was unreal. The car had no faults that I could detect on track – it was fast everywhere, had awesome brakes and more than enough go and was extremely stable and confidence inspiring at near race-car speeds. When I heard it was effectively stock (I think he had Tuner or Dinan sway bars and stickier Nitto NT-01s) I was pretty floored. It’s a much more planted chassis than the Z3s I had been in.
THAT SAID, I have a friend who has one, and on the original run-flat tires it’s pretty diabolical at the limit. It unpredictably breaks away (according to him) and there is no feel for when or how much it’s going to slide. I’ll leave a fair amount of that to tires; he’s a very good driver/instructor and his track car is a Lotus Elise sport, so he understands oversteer and vehicle dynamics well. Interesting that tires could make sure a huge difference but perhaps the sway bars tone it down too.

Z4-M is more classically handsome, IMHO, and I also love it…but, the original M-coupe design sends impulses into my nervous system that make me want to actually steal every single one I see out in the wild, I can’t explain it and I know it’s certainly not a universally shared sentiment. I like them both even more today because they’re of the pre-435 some odd programable driving mode combination era M cars.
