2001 BMW 740iL

The E38 7-series is a firm favorite around these parts, a throwback to the pre-Bangle era in BMW styling’s department, before things got all fussy and bloated. With its angular lines and restrained, good looks, the E38 is a bit like a bouncer in a bespoke suit: brawny but sophisticated looking. Given that many of them were pressed into service as executive transportation, it’s not surprising they mostly appear in subdued colors like black, silver or gray. But every now and again a more adventurously colored car pops up, like this low-mileage example for sale in California.

This long wheelbase 740iL comes in the dazzling color of Impalabraun Metallic. I’ve never seen this color on the road, but in the pictures and polished up under showroom lights, it looks like a gorgeous sandy brown with hints of gold and mauve.  The exterior looks spotless, as does the matching sand-beige leather interior and glossy wood interior trim. Power comes from the torquey 4.4 liter M62 V8, which here has a slight 66k miles under its belt. The only flaws apparent from the picture are some missing pixels on the digital odometer.

The full Sport pack available on SWB models, which added sport suspension and high stall torque convertor to some other cosmetic upgrades, was not offered on LWB cars. But a VIN check shows that this car was optioned with two features that make it a little Sport-like in external appearance: Shadowline trim around the windows, and 18″ M-Parallel wheels. It also has the upgraded Electronic Damping Control suspension.

E38s can be bought for much less than the $16k asking price on this one. But they don’t often show up in this condition, with this few miles and in such a unique color.

I was lucky enough to have owned a nearly identical 7 series, although not the long wheel base version (so it had the full sport pack). It was probably the most beautiful and spirited Euro sedan I’ve ever owned. The color alone made this car stand out with a ton of metal flake and really deep earth tones. I’ve been through a bunch of cars since and didn’t realize I was measuring them all against my old 7 series until I saw the listing. If you can live with a few “old technology” features, this car would be a wonderful purchase. I’m currently driving a Panamera and it’s the closest I’ve come to matching the sport/luxury combo.
