As my search for “the perfect” E46 M3 continues, this example popped on to my radar screen. Why? Well, for most intents and purposes, it’s “perfect”. With only 10,051 miles on the odometer, it’s one of the lowest mileage E46s anywhere. Condition is near perfect. It’s a 6-speed manual. It’s a coupe. These are all on the must-have list for what I’m considering; that brings us to color. On the inside is N5TT – Grey Nappa Leather. I’m still with you, as I don’t like the all-black interiors on these E46s. Outside is 405 – Imola Red II, a pleasingly blue-red shade that sets the car apart from the normal silvers and blacks that M3s all-too often appear in. Okay, Imola isn’t my favorite color, but when you’re talking about low-mileage 13 year old cars in basically new condition, it’s not as if there’s a huge pool to select from:

I find the journey some cars take to be very interesting. In the case of my Passat, it was a 2001-produced car that was then not sold until 2002; it spent many months between traveling the ocean from Germany to sitting on dealer lots before the first owner signed on the dotted line. Not so with this M3. The VIN indicates that this car was completed July 11, 2002. Carfax then indicates that it hit U.S. customs on July 30, 2002. It was detailed on August 15th, when they also installed the floor mats. Then, two days later, this M3 passed into the hands of the first owner. With that quick turnaround from production, you’d think that the excited owner must have sat with a dealer, ordering exactly the car that he or she wanted, then waited anxiously for it to arrive. And upon that magnificent unveiling in August, they went for a long drive? Nope, it doesn’t seem like it, since by April of the following year the car had only accrued 1,427 miles. Of course, that was a lot compared to what they would subsequently add on, since on average this car only covered 836 miles a year. So, they were keeping it as a collectable? No, since towards the bottom of its depreciation curve, this mint example appeared on a dealer lot in July 2014. And there it has sat for the past year, with only 20 miles driven since. It’s a bit sad, really, considering this is generally regarded as a driver’s car. The fact that it’s been for sale for a year probably indicates that the $40,000 asking price is just too much for the market at this point, but viewed from another perspective, it doesn’t seem that outrageous for what is effectively a new 2002 M3 in a pleasing color combination with the right gearbox. Is it the one for me? Not this time around; it’s far outside my budget, but for the right person this represents an amazing opportunity to own an unbelievably clean M3. If market trends are to be believed, this has the potential to be one of those times that we’ll look back and think “remember when we could have bought a 10,000 mile example for $40,000?”

I’m really rooting for this seller to get his asking price before the predatory bastards at Ent****t Auto Group grab this up for a 40% markup
