1982 Porsche 911SC Targa

The Porsche 911SC is often referred to as the perfect 911 for the beginner. Following on to the oft forgotten 911 2.7, the SC had a hearty 3.0 liter flat-6 as motivation and was the first 911 to include a cabriolet variant. Now that the new 991 series Targa has debuted with its classic roll hoop design, this is an optimal time to pick up a classic Targa like this low mileage SC version for sale in Massachusetts.

1973 Porsche 911E Targa

I am not usually a big fan of the Targa, but now and then certain examples do attract my attention more than others. Such is the case with this Signal Orange 1973 Porsche 911E Targa located in California. I have always enjoyed the contrast of Orange and Black on any car and there’s just something about the interplay of the Targa’s fixed rollhoop and slightly open interior with the Orange exterior that makes this car a bit more attractive to me relative to other Targa cars. For those who may not fully enjoy the aesthetics of a convertible, the Targa provides a distinctive form of open-top motoring that also (mostly) preserves the original lines of the car.

Old Faithfuls: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 240D & 1978 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

The chances are if you read GCFSB, you aren’t a big fan of the preeminent hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius. Still, the car does have its fans. I just get annoyed when I have to ride in one as a taxi. I’ve been known to wait until the next cab arrives because I can’t handle riding in these things. They are uncomfortable, especially when you go crashing about through potholes in an urban environment. The Prius makes me wax poetic for the days I spent in Europe shuffling around in Mercedes-Benz taxis, many of which are similar to the W123 model that we see here for sale in Maryland.

This particular late model 240D is a Euro market model, sure to appeal to those who like the slimmer bumpers and flush headlamps. With a 4-speed manual, you’ll be assured to get the most out of that tank of fuel, as well.

1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLi 16V Helios Edition

If yesterday’s 1987 Jetta GLi didn’t spark your interest, perhaps one of the most sought-after GLis made will. The 1989-only “Helios Edition” Jetta GLi took the already good economy sports sedan from Volkswagen and followed the “more is better” rule, adding better BBS RA color-coded wheels and awesomely striped and hugely supportive Recaro seats. It was the prototype for what would become the standard GLi in 1990, but this car was decidedly the best GLi we had seen to that point. Only 1500 were made and they infrequently come up for sale, so while today’s isn’t in as good of shape as the 1987 from yesterday, it’s still a bit of an event to see one:

1974 Pinzgauer 710M

$_57

For some amazing and unknown reason, there is a student at the university I work for who has a 6-wheeled Pinzgauer 712M. It is a refreshingly absurd choice in the mass of A4s, Jettas, and tuned BMWs. Yeah, it’s a rich kid making a crazy choice, but I appreciate the creativity.

You know what could make it even cooler? Tracks. Big-ass, go-anywhere, drive-over-Jettas tank tracks. The seller claims they cost $35k new, helping alleviate the fact that the $27k asking price is significantly higher than most of the old military vehicles we feature here. With or without them it’s going to need some love, as the interior is pretty beat. Luckily, the 4-cylinder was made to run on the lowest possible octane, meaning you could pretty much pee in the gas tank and it’d still climb a tree.
