Old Faithfuls: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 240D & 1978 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

The chances are if you read GCFSB, you aren’t a big fan of the preeminent hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius. Still, the car does have its fans. I just get annoyed when I have to ride in one as a taxi. I’ve been known to wait until the next cab arrives because I can’t handle riding in these things. They are uncomfortable, especially when you go crashing about through potholes in an urban environment. The Prius makes me wax poetic for the days I spent in Europe shuffling around in Mercedes-Benz taxis, many of which are similar to the W123 model that we see here for sale in Maryland.

This particular late model 240D is a Euro market model, sure to appeal to those who like the slimmer bumpers and flush headlamps. With a 4-speed manual, you’ll be assured to get the most out of that tank of fuel, as well.

Please feel free to come inspect it on a lift. the car has no options except power steering sunroof and alloy wheels. It has NO A/C. It has 106 kilometers which converts to 76,000 miles. If you want a wonderful 240D to last forever this car is it and will not disappoint. I am located near the DC metro in Suburban Maryland right outside of Washington DC.

The car has new brakes and rotors (all wheels) shocks ball joints, upper control arms, new exhaust, waterpump and Major service (valve adjustment fuel filters etc). It needs nothing.

Say you want the durability of a W123 but don’t necessarily need four doors? This 1978 300CD coupe comes in a rare shade of green. Travelling a quarter million miles is nothing for these cars and this particular coupe looks like it’s ready to gun for the half million mark.

1978 Mercedes 300CD with 225,000 miles. Engine has been rebuilt once and currently leaks a little oil. Tires are new and paint is beautiful. There are a couple of small dents, shown in the pictures and touch up job on the back drivers corner. The car has been taken care of through the years and there is normal wear in the carpet where your feet rub. The seats are perfect and all of the power windows and power sun roof work perfectly. This car still has the original Bosh wipers, first aid kit, spare tire tools and all of the manuals. A Haynes will be included as well. The Paint is original, as well as the Becker Europa II Stereo. The AC is missing the belt and I am not sure if it will be operational. Also, the Cruise Control needs the mounting piece for the cable. The car is a daily driver and I trust it completely. New tires and battery. The car is for sale locally and auction could end early, I have listed this for a friend you are welcome to contact him at dstinnett@cityofalcoa-tn.gov 865-705-2010

As much as I love a coupe, I would probably go for the 240D in this case. You’re not going to win a race with any of these diesel W123s, so I’d probably go for the newer car with a manual gearbox. Mileage isn’t so much of a concern with these cars as how they were kept. Both of these appear to have enough care lavished on them that the asking prices here are fairly reasonable, in light of how strong W123 prices have been as of late.
