1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E

Every decade there is a handful of cars that arrive on the scene that have the right stuff to permanently leave a mark on the automotive landscape. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Mk1 Volkswagen GTI and E30 BMW M3 are but a handful of motors that have shifted over into the icon category. Their respective manufacturers have tried to rekindle the magic of these vehicles over the years, much to their credit, but somehow, these cars will be frozen in time as some of the greats. This is the case with this car, the W124 Mercedes-Benz 500E/E500. Mercedes has come out with a number of AMG tuned E class sedans in the past two decades, but none seems to capture the hearts and minds like this super sedan with Porsche DNA. Interestingly enough, another icon of the 1990s was built in the same factory as this car, right after 500E/E500 production ended: the Audi RS2 Avant.

This particular 500E for sale in Georgia belies its age and the miles it has covered, looking truly immaculate in Brilliant Silver.

Stunning Twos – 1989 and 1991 Porsche 944 S2s

Yesterday, Paul wrote up a nice looking 968 with lower miles. The problem with these low mile 968s seems to be that people ask a lot of money for them. Now granted, comparing the money that E30 M3s command compared to the 968 asking prices puts them in a less outrageous context, but compared to the prices 944 Turbo Ss or 944S2s command, they do seem out of line. Case in point is todays two stunning examples of the 968 prototype, the 944S2. Effectively the 968 was this car, restyled and with an extra cog in the gearbox. If you can deal with only 5 speeds and prefer the boxier styling of the 944s, these 944S2s are a screaming deal – for now. Let’s look at a black early example first:

1989 BMW 325is

This particular BMW 325is brings back a lot of memories for me, as it is almost identical to my first car, an Alpine White 325is. Mine was of 1988 vintage with the larger bumpers, tan leather interior and slightly smaller basketweave BBS wheels with gold centers. A great car that was, and this ’89 example for sale in Georgia has me pining for another E30. With the slimmer bumpers and nicely contrasting red leather interior, this one is a looker and a decent alternative to those who pine after an E30 M3 but are on a budget.

Wednesday Wheels: Custom ordered 17×7 Corrado Speedlines

There aren’t many times that I’d seriously consider buying a set of wheels and building a car around them, but this may be one of those times. One of the best looking wheel designs in Volkswagen history was certainly when they handed the reigns over to Speedline to make the Corrado VR6 wheels. Unlike the typical BBS mesh wheels we had gotten on performance Volkswagens for some time, Speedline made a race-inspired chunky 5 spoke that was just perfect. Every time I see a Corrado, like yesterday’s Supercharged VR6 Corrado, I always miss the Speedline wheels when they’ve been replaced. Of course, they were only 15″ wheels, and the Corrado does look better with slightly larger designs. Some enterprising individuals therefore took it upon themselves to commission Speedline to do a special build of a 17″ version of the Corrado wheels. Sound crazy? Crazy wonderful!

Afternoon Accessories: 1990-1994 Volkswagen Passat Hella DE E-code lights

While it wasn’t an overwhelming sales success and a large percentage of the problem seemed to be the somewhat polarizing looks, I always preferred the look of the B3 Passat to the Quantum it replaced and the facelifted B4 that succeeded it. I thought the smooth, grill-less look was neat and clean; I liked the GTi-spec 2.0 16V motor, and the original chin spoiler reminded me of the first GTi’s lip. There aren’t many options for modifying these cars though, but one of the popular options – albeit rare – was to install the Hella DE projector light conversion. They’re hard to come by, but there’s a set on Ebay today:
