1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

$_57

I remember the days when you could buy a vintage Mercedes-Benz 190SL for pennies on the dollar. Sure, they weren’t the fastest thing from Stuttgart, but one quick glance and you might mistake one for its larger sibling, the 300SL. But between the original Gullwing and it’s open roofed stable mate and the Pagoda SL that followed, the 190SL was a bit forgotten. Today, however, it’s almost impossible to get into a 190SL on a budget, with the best examples bringing healthy six figure sums at auction. Fast forward a few more years though, and its descendant, the 560SL, can still be a relatively affordable proposition. This white on blue R107 for sale in Florida has just the right look to blend right in at the local yacht club.

1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup Diesel

$_57

For a country that loves its trucks, it’s curious we have so few options when it comes to new compact trucks. The Japanese have been in the game for quite some time, but even their offerings have grown to the point of not quite compact of late. There have been rumblings that Ford is going to get back in the game with an updated Ranger and GM is about to unleash a new Chevrolet Colorado for those who many find their full-size offerings a bit too much. Beyond compact pickups, there was another option years ago, the car-based truck.

Still available in some markets from certain manufacturers, these type of trucks were mainly used for light hauling and delivery duties. Volkswagen decided it would try its hat at its own version of the El Camino formula by offering US customers the Mk1 Rabbit Pickup years ago, known as the Caddy elsewhere. Offered for a few years alongside Rabbits and GTIs, these small trucks have a dedicated following, with many folks tuning them or adding GTI trim. This diesel version for sale in Oregon is in splendid, original condition, having been owned by one family its whole life.

1992 Volkswagen Golf Country

$_57 (2)

Any good enthusiast of foreign cars should have a list of which unicorns they want for each new year of eligible 25-year old import status. This Golf Country reminds me that 2017 will be a big year for me. Just look at it. The first time I saw and found out about the Golf Country I bled from my ears because my brain was spinning so hard. What… The… F? Lifted 4WD Mk2 Golf seemed like the coolest oddball that I’d never heard of. The one comes adorned with awesome Country decals with a ragtop sunroof and has covered just 113k miles. I’m setting an alarm to remind me to set my eBay followed searched to Golf Countrys in three years.

1968 Porsche 912

For those who may be less interested in collectability (though a good 912 may still enjoy collector status) and more interested in having a vintage Porsche to drive on weekends, the 912 still offers a great deal of value relative to many 911s. Intended as Porsche’s entry-level vehicle, the 912 shared the same basic body design and mechanical lay-out of the 911, but rather than the 911’s standard flat-six engine the 912 used a flat-four, initially as a 1.6 liter unit and late displacement was bumped to 2.0 liters. In its early years the 912 sold very well and even provided better handling balance than the 911 due to its lower weight at the rear. These were, in every way, cars intended to provide Porsche’s customers with an experience akin to that of their top-of-the-line sports car, but at a fraction of the cost. Today those same cost savings remain and owners can still appreciate what a ’60s rear-engined Porsche was all about. The example we have featured here is a numbers-matching Sand Beige 1968 Porsche 912 located in Indiana.

1962 Mercedes-Benz Unimog

$_57

The Unimog is one of my favorite go-anywheremobiles, and while this recent bout of Bay Area rain has people driving like kittens walking on ice, I realize the rest of the country has had a hell of a winter that makes driving truly treacherous. All of a sudden the guys who bought snow mogs and have endured the esnuing “crazy dude with a SnowMog” derisions are looking like prophets. Well, if next winter is like this one, here’s your chance to stay ahead of the curve. Recently restored, this beplowed Unimog 406 looks awesome in red with a badass bed basket and is getting a lot of attention, with 57 Watchers on the auction.
