1993 Porsche 928GTS

For years there was continuing rumors that Porsche would finally produce a four-door saloon, but it wasn’t until 2009 that the Panamera would appear on the scene. No matter how good of a drive the Porsche Panamera is, I just can’t get by the aesthetics. It’s certainly not the ugliest car ever produced, but it just has an awkward presence that puts its grand touring predecessor, the 928, in a good light. Futuristic for its time, the car has aged gracefully and late model examples such as this 928GTS have begun to appreciate considerably. This 928GTS for sale in Ontario, Canada has a reasonable 66,000 miles on the clock and the more common 4-speed automatic gearbox.

1989 Porsche 944 Turbo with 38,000 Miles

I suppose it’s beating a dead horse just a bit, but it’s astounding what a good deal the overlooked 944 Turbo is these days. You can get a very clean early 86 944 Turbo for around $10,000 – significantly less than what an equivilant E30 M3, Quattro or 190E 16V will cost you. Performance from the turbocharged inline-4 will surprise the other three legends, too. Even in early 220 horsepower specification, the 944 Turbo will easily out accelerate, out turn and out brake the other three. The most aerodynamic of the three, it will also return the best fuel economy on a long trip. The only downside is that, unlike the others, the rear seats are mostly useless to anyone who has legs; but they’re there in a pinch, and the versatility of the hatch in part makes up for some of the downside. But for Porsche, it wasn’t quite enough to have a car capable of besting its contemporaries, so in 1988 Porsche upped the ante with the “S”; an additional 30 horsepower, trick M030 Koni suspension, limited slip differential and forged Fuchs wheels led the list of changes that were carried over into 1989:

1987 Audi 5000S Avant with 45,000 Miles

When it comes to memorable Audis from the 1980s, the 5000 undeservedly gets little attention. That’s especially true when you back out the turbo and quattro versions of Audi’s flagship sedan. But in many ways it was the success of the large Audi sedans that allowed for the more exotic Quattro development – and the 5000 was a revolutionary success. Compared with what was on offer from rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW at the time, the 5000 was downright futuristic and more modern in every way. It was an aerodynamic marvel, quiet and capable of returning excellent fuel economy. It was also hugely practical, too – especially when configured in hatchback Avant spec. Though the sloping rear glass dropped storage space a bit, it wasn’t much – and it’s amazing what can fit inside of these cars. Indeed, I used my 200 Avant to bring a complete 7A inline-5 home; the hatch actually assisted this since we could get the engine hoist over the car – something that would be impossible in most wagons. Still, most enthusiasts want the turbocharged quattro version, leaving the few front drivers that remain throwbacks to a time when a 120 horsepower large wagon was a reasonable option:

1968 Porsche 911 Sunroof Coupe

There are times when I feel like we feature quite a few auctions of a pre-1974 911 and I forget how truly rare it is to come across a quality example of these cars. Still here we are on back-to-back weeks featuring a 1968 Porsche 911 Sunroof Coupe, though this time in a lovely Irish Green exterior over Tan interior. The car featured here was originally a Sportomatic, Porsche’s early attempt at producing a clutchless manual, but the owner asked his dealer to convert it to the full manual transmission. There are some details to work out with regard to the work done on the car – perhaps specifically the statement of a “new interior” – but overall we have a good looking early 911 that has spent its days in California and sits with very reasonable mileage given the year.

Tuner Tuesday: Audiacious Duo – 2001 S4 4.2 V8 and 2003 S8 6-speed

As I’ve talked about many times, the Audi/Volkswagen crowd is one of the most unique in the automotive enthusiast world. The home of polarizing taste, there are both VAG enthusiasts who do a great job modifying their cars and those who ruin them in the pursuit of the being unique. Today we seemingly have one of each; a questionably modified 2001 S4 and a slick looking 2003 S8. Which would be the ride you’d choose? Let’s start with the S4:
