The R107 Mercedes-Benz SL always had a bit of a feminine personality to it. This generation SL was certainly more luxury oriented than the W113 SL it replaced. When the R129 took the R107’s place after an impressive 18 year production run, once again a manual transmission was back on the options list. Was this a sign of changing times? While the 5-speed manual SL didn’t last that long, some AMG styling bits went a long way to give this roadster a more brutish appearance. This final year 2002 SL500 for sale in Florida is closing in on 100,000 miles but still looks quite fresh.

We’ve seen this story before: we come across an already rare Porsche model, this time a 911S, which has its rarity compounded by other factors and we end up with a super rare model. But there’s always a minor hiccup. In the case here, added to the rarity of the S is that this is a long-wheel-base soft-window targa. However, it has a non-original engine that while correct for the model was not the engine particular to this car. Exactly how many of these cars exist appears to be unknown, though the R&T article the seller directs us to states that there were a total of 9 of this specific model built in 1969. Even if that number is incorrect, the total is still going to be very low. A non-numbers matching example in this condition can still do very well for collectors, but there is always going to be that sticking point about originality. For the car itself: we have here an Irish Green 1969 Porsche 911S Soft-window Targa, located in California, with 153,000 miles on it.

Comments closedThough it sits in a forgotten corner of the enthusiast realm for most of the time, the Corrado will always be a cool car. While the original Scirocco was a stunner, the second generation was a bit dumpy. The Corrado brought great looks and an allegedly transcendent driving experience with some very appealing engine choices, creating a sporty compact FWD hatchback that had many strengths. Price was a downfall, as it may be for today’s example. It looks very nice in a fresh coat of white paint and the matching wheels – sometimes a death knell – look appropriate. Apparently they were part of a $25k-round of investment though, which should be reserved for classic cars and startup companies.

9 CommentsIt seemed to be it was easier to keep up with vehicle changes year on year, mainly because there were less models populating manufacturer portfolios. As much as a petrolhead as I am, I can’t keep up with all the new model variants cropping up. Many seem to be a mashup of existing models meant to exploit every little automotive niche that might exist. But in reality, they are just variations on a particular modular platform. I still look back longingly to the days when the Mercedes-Benz lineup consisted of mainly the C, E, S and SL classes. It was simpler times and cars like this final year W124 E320 Cabriolet contained much of the DNA that made these cars popular with the monied set. This example for sale in Denver is a one owner car, showing under 50,000 miles on the clock.
