1990 Porsche 944S2 Cabriolet

$_4 (1)

In light of the bidding frenzy on the extremely low mileage Porsche 944 Turbo we featured earlier in the week, I had the urge to seek out another 944 to feature, although this time a little less common of a model. The 944 Cabriolet was sold for two years in the US, with less than 2,500 sold here. It came late in the lifecycle of the 944, equipped in this market solely with the 2.5 liter 16-valve engine. This has been a model relegated to relative obscurity, even amongst P-car fanatics. The weather outside might suggest differently for some of us, but it’s a great time to start thinking about that drop top and get a jump on your summer motoring plans. This 944 Cabriolet for sale in Florida has covered almost 100,000 miles but appears in good shape.

2003 Audi S6 Avant

I stopped by my long-time mechanic’s just the other day to discuss some suspension repairs to the Subaru. This particular mechanic – Duarte de Costa at D&F Motorsports in Providence, Rhode Island – has been serving our family now for the best part of twenty years. He even came to my wedding. As our editor Paul said, “That’s when you know you’re into a guy deep!” To be honest, I wasn’t surprised that there was a family car there – Duarte bought my parent’s Allroad when they had enough of the repairs. But also on the lift was my father’s 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo with a headgasket failure. Parked sadly underneath it, though, was the Allroad, complete with collapsed suspension once again. By my count, it’s the fifth time in ten years that the suspension has had to be serviced. But it’s not alone; drive around Providence and you’ll see any number of Allroads bouncing around on blown airbags. It’s become so rare to see a nice one around here, you almost forget that they’re really pretty good looking cars. What’s inescapable for many, though, are the expensive repairs to keep the twin-turbocharged V6 and the active air suspension going. What’s the solution for a good looking Allroad then? Ditch both of those things and get the even more potent S6 Avant:

1976 BMW 2002

During a trip to Germany in 2008, I stopped by the BMW Zentrum in Munich to check out the wares on the showroom floor and indulge in some of their collection from years past. One of the cars on display was an Inka Orange 2002tii. This was my favorite color for a 2002. It really captured the essence of the period in question and gave this car a cheerful appearance. This 2002tii for sale outside of New York City is not quite as pristine an example as the BMW restored car I saw in Munich, but with a 5-speed manual gearbox and some nice leather Recaro seats, you’ll be ready for some long-distance cruising in no time.

1967 Porsche 911S Coupe

By now, we are all familiar with discussion of the somewhat atypical handling traits of the 911. As a rear-engined rear-wheel drive sports car it remains a peculiar design, though one that has been enormously successful. Early in its life those traits were magnified by the 911’s shorter wheelbase. In 1969 the entire 911 range (along with the 912) received a 57mm increase in its wheelbase. The overall length of the cars was carried over from previous years, but the rear wheels were moved further towards the rear of the car, providing better handling balance and mitigating some of the 911’s skittish, tail-happy nature. This would be of particular importance to Porsche’s highest performing model, the 911S. With its lighter weight and increased power the S gave Porsche customers the ultimate expression of these rear-engined cars, but further increased the need for attentiveness while piloting them. Of course, their short-lived nature makes the short-wheelbase models somewhat of an anomaly among the range and therefore quite valuable. The example here is a restored Light Ivory 1967 Porsche 911S Coupe, located in Houston.

1997 Mercedes-Benz G36 AMG

$_4 (1)

A little more than a decade has passed since Mercedes-Benz North America decided to finally import it’s legendary Geländewagen and the truck is still in the lineup after 13 years in the market. Before this, it was up to private importers to bring this vehicle to our shores, most notably Europa International out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Before Mercedes started officially importing to the G Wagen to the US, AMG variants were few and far between. This G-Wagen for sale in California began life as a G320 but has been transformed into a G36 AMG, with the AMG 3.6 liter engine supplanted under hood, along with AMG exhaust, 18” AMG wheels and the requisite brush guards for the correct look. If you’ve wanted an AMG G-Wagen but were perhaps a bit weary of the V8 thirst, this clone could be a good compromise.
