1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa

I’ve looked at a few 911SC Targas lately that I’ve really liked and all appeared to be fairly reasonable values, which admittedly was a large part of the appeal. I’ll now fast forward in time a little bit to the 964 to take a look at a 1991 Porsche Carrera 2 Targa. This one isn’t quite the excellent value the others appeared to be, but it comes in one of our perennial favorite colors: Cobalt Blue. I’ve seen a good number of 964 Targas come up for sale over the past few months and as is typical they come in wide ranging conditions. This one isn’t perfect either, but for the most part it looks in very good shape, and as a one-owner 911 we can hope there’s a good bit of history to come with it.

Double-Take: Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet

I have been enjoying my jaunt through the world of classic 911s looking at examples of the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera. We’ve seen a few nice, and reasonably priced, Targas, a couple very nice Coupes, and a very pretty Carrera Cabriolet. That last model will take our focus in this post as we look at examples from both the beginning and end of the 3.2 Carrera’s model run. 1983, the last year of 911SC production, was the first year Porsche produced a 911 Cabriolet and since there was only one year for those models, it is to the 3.2 Carrera that we typically must turn when looking for the combination of a fully-open cockpit with that classic 911 design. I wouldn’t classify the two we see here as especially rare colors since each is more a subtle variant of a common color, but the color combinations are not ones that we come across very frequently. Those combinations definitely bring with them an extra level of scarcity with these. We will begin with the example from the first year of 3.2 Carrera production, a Slate Blue Metallic 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet located in California with Grey Beige leather interior and 48,133 miles on it.

2000 Dinan BMW M5

On Friday, Carter related the E39 M5’s star power, even when found in Green on Tan. Today, I bring you one of the most impressive E39s we’ve seen, a 19k-mile M5 with a heap of Dinan upgrades. It’s not quite the full S2 package, but it has enough points to achieve the DINAN trunk badge. As with all Dinan products, we can be sure that they only add to the M5 experience. If I had that supplemented driving machine, I’d have a hard time parking it, but this one has covered fewer than 20k miles. It’s usually a knock against ultra-low-mileage cars when they’re been tuned, and I guess it keeps this from being a museum piece, but we can be sure that it will command a hefty sum – both for the lack of use and the well-chosen, BMW-approved modifications.

One of One: 1964 Auto Union 1000S Coupe

For some time, the fate of Audi seemed sealed. Post World War II, Auto Union GmbH’s production was focused on the DKW automobiles that fit into the European economic situation much better than the pre-War luxury cars from Horch and Audi. But the market was changing, and Auto Union launched the very pretty 1000SP Coupe and Convertible. But, there was no denying that the 1000SP looked like a 1950s car in a 1960s world. Audi’s production would really have to wait until the launch of the C1 chassis in 1968; prior to that, some re-badged DKW models wore the Audi name but sold only in small numbers. The C1 would prove to be a pretty popular model, though, and the new 100 model would be available as both a sedan and as a 2-door “Coupe S” model. The lines of that model, as with the 1000SP, mimicked more expensive and famous cars such as the Fiat Dino and Aston Martin DBS. It was a pretty large departure from the mini-Thunderbird look of the 1000SP and much more modern. But, it appears that there may have been a missing link developed in the mid-1960s:

1964 Porsche 356SC

Vintages Porsches always have a more limited appeal unless they are a particularly rare model, in which case the limitations become financial. The 356 does have its share of fans, but with the 911 remaining ever popular it tends to garner much of the attention. That is to be expected given the sheer iconic stature the 911 has developed over its 50 years of production, but I remain strangely attracted to the 356. They’re attractive cars that easily show their foundation as the 911’s predecessor. So even if they’ve be relegated behind the 911, the 356 remains the 911’s roots and for that it deserves plenty of appreciation. The example here comes from near the end of 356 production: a Silver 1964 Porsche 356SC, located in Maryland, with a magnificent Red interior and a reported 58,645 miles on it.
