1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Complain about not finding enough interesting 911 Coupes and suddenly you start finding a few interesting 911 Coupes. Funny how that works. This particular Coupe won’t be of interest to those hoping for originality or something to add to a collection, but it is nonetheless an interesting option that should provide excellent possibilities for driving on both road and track. It is primarily the execution and attention to detail that I find most striking about this example. The exterior also presents quite well, something that is not always the case with track cars. A 911 like this takes us back to the model’s roots and serves as a reminder that while Porsche has become very much a luxury brand and the 911 itself remains one of the best luxury sports coupes on the market, much of the marque’s history lies in racing and it is always nice to see well executed examples from caring owners. Here we have a Granite Green Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in British Columbia, with around 118K kilometers on it (~73,300 miles).

1971 Opel Rekord C

One of the joys that continues to drive my automotive interest is seeing cars that aren’t often discussed day to day. They may not be the most attractive, best selling or performing cars ever made, but regardless it’s because of their infrequency that they’re neat to see. No one would claim any of the previous traits for basically any Opel model ever produced. But in what can become a sea of Porsche 911s and BMW E30s, strolling across a clean early 1970s Opel coupe can really be a breath of fresh air. Let’s stop for a moment with our usual programming and take a look at this 1971 Rekord C:

Feature Listing: 1987 BMW 325ic

April 2017 update: The seller of this car has relisted it HERE!

It’s very interesting to me to look back and compare the 1980s offerings from the big three luxury producers in Germany. In many ways, BMW lagged behind the competition early on. Audi launched the B2 chassis in 1980, and it revised the standards of the near luxury market for Germany. There were diesel and gas motors, two or four-door configurations, and even a wagon from sister company Volkswagen. But the real addition gearheads loved was the wide-winged turbocharged and all-wheel drive Quattro, the first of the hot versions that would come to the market for junior executives. Indeed, it was the Quattro that changed the future of the W201, as Mercedes-Benz changed the mission of the future 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth from rally to circuit racer. So, Mercedes-Benz had a track version of the W201, and it also set the standard in build quality. Bringing those reputations to the small luxury market meant a whole new class of clientele and the W201 was massively successful thanks to a bunch of factors. While VAG produced about 1.6 million B2 chassis cars between 1976 and 1987, an amazing 1.8 million W201s made it to market. Those successes put more pressure on BMW, and it responded.

The E30 was without doubt the sportiest of the three out of the box, and just like the B2 is was amazingly versatile. There were sedans and 2-door sedans, and BMW was able to match the Volkswagen Passat with a Touring offering. Hot shoes liked the addition of the Motorsports division M3, which not only met the challenge of the Quattro and Cosworth but exceeded it by nearly every measure. Build quality was great but performance was even greater. But BMW wasn’t done, as it took the versatility – and the small executive market – to a new level. Not satisfied with the diversity of the range already, the Munich engineers introduced a trump card over its rivals by removing the roof. An often overlooked development in the hot E30 market, the ic models would set the standard and demand responses from its rivals.

1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera

Last week I featured a Guards Red 1976 Porsche 930 that probably would have made for an interesting option if the price was right. Unfortunately, the current asking price is not right. Here we have another example, but this one appears to lack the flaws of that Guards Red 930 and as such it likely stands a much better chance of reaching its high asking price. When I came across this 930 I was immediately struck because I could swear I had seen it before, but couldn’t immediately place it. The pictures obviously have been heavily edited with regard to shading and lighting, but there’s a pretty good reason for that: the collection from which this 930 hails was featured in Excellence Magazine’s December 2015 issue and the pictures from that shoot used these same lighting changes. That was the aspect of these pictures that immediately recalled this 930 to mind and I am sure the seller hopes that buyers will recognize the car as being related to those in that article given the praise that was heaped upon the restoration work carried out on those early 930s. As far as I can tell this isn’t one of the three 930s featured in the Excellence article, or at least if it is one of them then the interior has been changed since those cars each had tartan fabric seat inserts. I’m not sure if those seat inserts were original, but I really hope they haven’t been removed because they looked fantastic and provided for a much more interesting interior.

1974 BMW Bavaria

Upon seeing this BMW Bavaria, I thought perhaps Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ BMW 3.0S was back up for sale again. For years, Mrs. Onassis tooled around Manhattan in one of these sedans. The 3.0S was the more luxurious version of what we see here. Importer Max Hoffman had convinced BMW to build a special model for the US market, with fewer options than other variants in the lineup but with the largest engine available. So what we’re looking at here is the forebear to many modern BMW performance sedans, a template that is going strong to this day. This Bavaria for sale in Florida is an older restoration and is equipped with the 3-speed automatic. Not the optimal combination for enthusiasts but fewer BMWs of this vintage come at a lower cost of entry.
