A new week, a new R129. This reason I chose this 500SL was of course this wonderfully 90s color of Teal Blue Metallic combined with Lago Metallic. It’s one of those love it or hate color combinations that are tied to an era. You don’t see a lot of colors like these on new cars, if any. But I think of it like the rainbow of colors from the 70s and 80s that were featured on the W115, W123, R113, and so on. These crazy color combos are now admired over the typical sliver, black or even worse, tan. The thing is, color combinations like this only work if they are taken care of. And this 1992 500SL for sale in St. Louis certainly looks like it was.

Transporting the ’70s into the late-80s sometimes results in something a little disjointed. Even only a decade on items that were once loved now no longer are seen in that same light. The 911 we see here may fit into just such a category. Here we have a Cognac Brown Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Oregon, with Cashmere leather interior and 68,400 miles on it. Porsche has offered a variety of shades of brown for their cars throughout most of the marque’s existence, but we tend to see them most frequently in the late-70s to early-80s. Those seem to be the years when such natural tones predominated. In recent years, I’ve begun to notice some of these colors making a resurgence, especially among the darker shades, but still a lighter metallic brown like the one we see here remains pretty uncommon on the roads these days. To be honest these aren’t the most dynamic of colors but in the right light they do look good. And, of course, for those that are a fan the lack of love usually results in a lower cost of entry.

2 CommentsFollowing on to the clean 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300D from last week, here’s that car’s petrol powered cousin, a 1980 280E. While they sold the W123 with the M110 inline-6 in the US market, this 280E was a German market spec vehicle imported to the US in the 1990s. It shows just under 50,000 miles on the odometer and it shows, which makes this car barely a baby in terms of W123 speak. While this might be a target for collectors, this is a Benz that could serve as a practical classic and probably still run until you take your last breath.

Comments closedIn many ways this Porsche 911 possesses a lot of what makes me love these cars so much, but which has seemed to be unobtainable as prices for these early cars have elevated. It’s a mix of original spec and modifications, but it doesn’t stray far remaining true to that original design but still possessing some nice upgrades. It’s neither pristine nor a dog. This is all to say that there is just something about the general ethos of this 911 that draws me in. Here we have a Beige Grey 1973 Porsche 911E Targa, located in New York, with, the seller assumes, around 149,000 miles on it. While Beige Grey sounds about as boring as is possible it does actually look very good, and even if it’s not Tangerine or Viper Green – colors that would really attract our notice – it is still a nice alternative and gives this 911 a gritty feel that works well with its overall aesthetic. I even like the contrast of the Minilite wheels at the rear!

4 CommentsI remember vividly when the Mercedes-Benz W140 debuted. It seemed such a big departure from the W126 S-class, both in physical size and technology. Pouring over the pages of a brochure sent to my father from Mercedes-Benz North America, I marveled at this car’s features, such as the small chrome posts that would emerge from the rear fenders to help guide in parking and the new 6.0 liter V12 that found its way under the hood of the 600SEL, a car which could be optioned with four-place seating. If that wasn’t enough, the W140 could quite possibly be one of the few vehicles to feature an electrically adjustable rear view mirror. If that isn’t over the top, I’m not sure what is. Some folks liked this car for its technical prowess, others derided it for its size and excess in a worldwide recession. It’s hard to think, though, that a quarter century has passed since this car’s introduction, giving way to successors it bore little resemblance to. This 1992 500SEL for sale in South Dakota is a like new example with less than 20,000 miles on the clock.
