2022 BMW M5 CS

Like the looks of the M2 CS but need four doors…and 180 horsepower more? That’s the recipe for BMW’s 2022 M5 CS, which sheds a claimed 230 lbs from the base M5 while upping horsepower to 627. To achieve the weight drop, the M5 CS utilizes carbon-fiber front seats, twin bucket rear seats in place of the standard bench, less sound insulation, and a carbon hood, front splitter, mirror caps, and rear valance. Also included in the $143,000 base price are forged 20″ wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, revised suspension tuning, and gold/bronze details. It all pulls together for a pretty slick package – if you can afford it. And today’s limited-edition one isn’t hitting the auction circuit anywhere close to sticker. Let’s take a look:

Brands Hatch Gray probably isn’t the color I’d choose were I ordering one new, but it looks neat and is offset nicely by the bronze details. Inside is, rather unfortunately, a sea of black. Okay, the shiny black offsets the matte black, but why didn’t they carry the bronze accents – or body-color tones – inside? To me, BMW missed the mark slightly on this car; sure, it’s mega impressive that it’ll do 0-60 in 2.9 seconds and 190 mph. But if they were going for a lightweight special, why not ditch the heavily AWD and automatic systems to replace them with a 7-speed manual and rear drive? The answer is simple – it wouldn’t be as fast, and today’s ultra-sport-sedan market seems to only about who wins Matt Watson’s Carwow drag races.

Then there’s the price. How is this one the best part of $70,000 over sticker? And who would pay over $200,000 for an M5? The original US M5 stickered for $47,900 and there were effectively no options. Corrected for inflation, that’s about $114,000 – about 10k more than the current base M5’s sticker price. I get that the CS models are special, but I don’t understand paying over double the standard model’s price.

That hump in the front seat would be a deal killer for me.

Wow, those seats look miserable to sit in! And I’m not sure about the shade of gold that they used on the exterior–it’s just not quite right. Maybe it’s just the photos or the exterior paint color. And yes, $200k is insane.

Totally useless car. M5s used to be fast, enjoyable cars. E28, e34, e39 are all-time greats. Even the e60 was a great M5 with a bad transmission. They all had comfort, character and were plenty fast for the road. They did not need a track or “competition” version as that’s not what the M5 is about. Save those for M2/M3/M4, and spend the M5 development budget on making it a more involving and comfortable car. Stiffer and faster are NOT what is needed.

I’ve never understood the purpose of the CS M-cars. The people that I met that have one are all about the ‘flex’, either on Instagram or at a C&C. They drive it for a year or so, get bored, and then move on to something else. They have zero appreciation for the brand.
