2007 Audi RS4 Avant

So close, and yet so far…

Just last month I took a look at a Sprint Blue RS4 sedan. The RS4 really is the perfect balance of a great motor, a great-looking package, good handling, and just enough tech – the sweet spot in used German sedans. Of course, they also offered it as a cabriolet here and an Avant abroad; though the fast five-door was never imported to the US. However, our friends in the great white north have more lax laws on importation; consequently, this 15-year-old example is now for sale up in Quebec. And boy, does it look great!

1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

One of the big things keeping the classic car hobby alive and more importantly keeping these cars moving are the classic rallies. All the way from the top at the Mille Miglia to the little local club drives to the local BBQ restaurant, these events keep the wheels turning. No matter what kind of event you are into and what era car you own, you can probably find something you live.

Today, we have an unusual example for a classic rally, but that doesn’t mean the previous owners didn’t go all-in with the theme. This 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC up for sale in Germany has all the equipment to compete in a number of events and the stickers to prove. Not a brand choice to soak up miles.

2019 Mercedes-Maybach S650

A few weeks ago I took a look at the former king of the Mercedes-Benz chauffer cars, the Maybach 62S. Back when it hit the scene in the early 2000s, it rivaled everything on the road of terms of executive ground transpiration and certainly had the price tag to match. However, now that 20 years have passed, it isn’t so impressive anymore other than it being a look back into the time and doing the math at how much value they have lost. When Mercedes brought back the Maybach name as a sub-brand in 2015, it certainly made more sense to have them positioned as a trim level of the S-Class, rather than trying to pitch them as an entirely new brand. Wouldn’t you know, it fared much better and certainly kept production costs down as the majority of the changes were just to the rear seating and some various trim pieces. In typical S-Class fashion, it followed a heavy depreciation after the first few years but still offers great value if you want to go that route. This 2019 up for sale in Texas offers you a $50,000 discount if you’d like roll around in a previous generation car. Would anyone even notice?

2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT

The world wasn’t ready for the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. When the numbers came out, everyone wondered if they were actually possible. So it has 631 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque. We’ve seen those numbers a bunch of times out of big SUVs and trucks. That isn’t the impressive part. The silly part is that this 4979-pound SUV does 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and can lay a quarter mile run of 11.1 seconds. Not only straight line speed, but it also recorded a 7:38.9 Nordschleife lap time. That is faster than the 997 Porsche 911 GT3. What is going on here?

1977 BMW 530i

Update 8.26.2022: eBay shows buy-it-now sold for $9,475.00. Congratulations to buyer and seller! -dc

Being an Audi fan, I’m aware of what a bad reputation can do to cars. In the 1970s, Audi gained a reputation for unreliability and poor electronics; perhaps justified, considering the many stories that people have about early Audi 100 ownership. However, it’s a haunting reputation that nearly 40 years on they’re still trying to shake. It looked as if by the early 2000s they had done so, but now a generation on, the cars from the Y2K generation have their own problems and have bred more discontent generally from enthusiasts on the outside looking in. The result is that it’s damn near impossible to find a nice condition Audi from the 1970s, and in just a few years we’ll see the same thing with 2000s Audis, too.

Where am I going with this, considering this is a listing for a BMW? Well, the early E12s had their own problems, but notably that was an issue in the US. That’s because to meet US market regulations, the E12 was made slower and more ugly. Large 5 m.p.h. bumpers were fitted, and compression on the M30 was dropped to meet lower fuel standards. Additionally, to burn off hydrocarbons to meet emissions regulations, the 530i was fitted with thermal reactor manifolds. They did as their name suggested, though the reaction unfortunately many times was with the internals of the engine – warping heads and frying valves. It was a debacle that spelled the death of the 530i, reborn as the 528i in 1979. Coupled with rust issues that this generation BMW had, it’s now quite hard to find an original U.S. spec 530i. Yet here’s a lovely one for sale:
