I hope you like yellow. I always seem to go hot and cold on the color, and honestly that is because it entirely depends on what car it is. Last week we saw a very rare 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 sell for a bunch of money and I’m certain if that car was black, it wouldn’t have sold for that price. However, whenever Designo gets involved, they seem to turn the dial up a few notches. That was the case with this 1998 SLK 320 Kompressor up for sale in Italy. Hold on.
One of my favorite Mercedes-Benz nerd “fun facts” has to do with the 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E. This chassis is quite possibly the most basic model you can find, but it is still loved by many due to the fact it will go for nearly forever as long as you take care of it. So what is the trivia about it? Well, in 1993 you could buy the 300E with an M104 2.8-liter inline-6 or an M104 3.2-liter inline-6. Back when numbers on badges meant something, this was a big deal. Not to mention a little bit of a horsepower difference as well.
Today, we have one of those 1993 model years with not the 3.2, but rather the smaller 2.8. M104 is M104, right?
Once again the internet teaches me something new when I think I’ve seen it all. This is a 1995 Mercedes-Benz 350GD which is fixed with what looks to be a “high roof” body. These weren’t all that uncommon back in the W460 chassis given their utility, but I can’t remember seeing one on what looks to be a civilian 350GD. The seller says it was made for the Dutch Forestry Commission, whatever that is, but this seems like such an odd vehicle to use for such a purpose at that time. Either way, it is now up for sale in the UK of all places and the price is actually really good, as long as you can live without backseats.
I’m a sucker for special editions and crazy packages, and today’s car is something I didn’t expect to see come from Porsche. What we have today is a 2022 Porsche 718 Spyder with the 000 Package. What exactly is that? 000 Magazine, which is a really great quarterly if you can swing the price, partnered up with the Porsche Exclusive department to offer a package that bundled a bunch of different options today. It was offered in four colors: GT Silver Metallic, along with paint-to-sample shades of Brewster Green, Albert Blue, and today’s color, Slate Grey. You also got the interior trimmed in Ascot Brown leather, LED Headlights with PDLS+, brake calipers in high-gloss black, black brushed aluminum trim, and illuminated doorsills in stainless steel with the 000 logo. If you opted for GT Silver Metallic, the pricing came in at $143,380. However, add another $13,000 for those other paint-to-sample colors. All in, you are probably around $160,000. Do you want exclusive? You’ll pay.
Despite Porsche saying they are doing everything they can to produce as many 911 GT3 examples as they can, I still think there will always be more people out there with the money and will to buy them as there are made. They will also buy them at a massive premium over their MSPR if history has taught us anything. This 2022 up for sale in beautiful Beverly Hills, California seems to be following that trend. Although, you might be noticing something here.
