1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

How fitting. 

Fewer cars assimilate better in a (literal) sea of eight-figure yachts and apartments than the winged wonder itself, the 300SL Gullwing. Anyone in Monaco can buy an Aventador, 812 Superfast, or Veyron, ride around the entire time in first gear, and call themselves a connoisseur of fine automobiles. The exact opposite of that is true in those cases, and a very quick remedy of that is today’s car, a 1956 300SL Gullwing in Strawberry Red Metallic. This is a car with style and taste, although the exhaust doesn’t backfire and shoot flames when driving past various casinos. Also, it is extremely expensive to purchase, maintain, repair, insure, and really hard to get in and out of wearing anything other than athletic clothes. Still, it is worth all those sacrifices and more.

Back in 2016 when the Porsche 911 R broke cover, GT boss Andreas Preuninger said of it, “It’s a car just for a fun day.” Typical German understatement, the same way they claimed they ” … still looks with pride at the honorable record of the Hindenburg and her crew” after their dirigible had an uncharacteristically rough landing. To me, the 911 R is up there with the GT3 RS 4.0 in terms of the best 911s made in the past 20 years and would without a doubt look to own one if I could afford one. That seems unlikely given what they are currently selling for, though…

The 997 Porsche 911 generation continues to age gracefully in my eyes. It certainly won’t get mistaken for a new car, but I certainly think it a soothing and classic shape that will go down as a “win” for the design team at Porsche. As with almost cars, the facelift model years always get the first look, but I really like the pre-facelift examples just as much as the later cars. Today’s example, a base 2005 C2, is finished in the classic Guards Red over black leather and has just 39,000 miles. The price? Well … at least it is in the ballpark.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

In terms of the king of the hill in the Porsche 911 GT world, there are two. One is the 2011 GT2 RS, and the other is today’s car, the 2011 GT3 RS 4.0. Both of them were extremely limited in production, and most importantly, had a manual gearbox. Because of that, they sell for crazy money. Really crazy money. They have the perfect formula to be a really great collector car, and if you have a half a million bucks to spend, it all comes down to whether you want turbochargers or no. I don’t think either can be called better than the other, but for me, I might lean towards this GT3 RS 4.0.

Outside of a handful of paint-to-sample examples, the 600 cars were either offered in black or Carrara White. Today, we have one in British Racing Green. Naturally, I freaked out and thought this might be the best 4.0 ever spec’d out, but was disappointed to see it is wearing a vinyl wrap and not paint. Still, if you have $400,000, I would suggest this purchase.

1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

Among the craziness of the used car market in the past two years is what has been happening with the 993 Porsche 911 Turbo models. For a long stretch there, you could grab a nice example for somewhere between $100,000 to $135,000. For that amount I think it was well worth the price of entry. It is an unmistakable design, enough pep and power to keep up with modern exotics, and not a total disaster to own like some of the mid-1990s cars that hail from Italy. Now, in 2002, if you want a nice 993 Turbo…oh boy.

This 1996 up for sale in Tennessee is reportedly a one-owner car finished in the sleek Polar Silver Metallic. It has just over 51,000 miles and a fresh engine-out service that ran almost $28,000. I suppose you could say a $28,000 repair bill was worth it when you see this asking price.
