1977 Mercedes-Benz 300D ‘Coupe’

Just when I thought I’ve seen it all! What we are looking at is a 1977 Mercedes-Benz 300D that somehow was transformed into a strangely proportioned coupe. According to the seller, the body was modified by removing the rear doors, moving fuel tank and fuel door two feet forward, and extended the trunk lid two feet. Try to wrap your head around that. On top of that, this car already exists and Mercedes made of ton of them! Unless this car was modified right in 1977 when it came out, it made no sense why someone would do this. But here it is, in all its mis-proportioned glory. Just to make it even stranger, it is powered by a 1983 OM617 Turbodiesel engine. Let’s take a look:

I know there is a massive yearning for the lightweight aircooled Porsche 911s, but given how Porsche had to deal with, the 991 generation turned out pretty good. It surely isn’t ugly or offensive in terms of styling, and the performance is always at the world standard in terms of how they manage so much performance out of a flat-six engine that fits behind a set of the rear seats. I don’t think there is single variant of the 991 that you couldn’t drive everyday if you were brave enough, granted there was no snow on the roads, and still be extremely comfortable doing it. Even the base model C2 examples, like the one we are looking at today, still brings strong performance terms of power and numbers. The thing I have to wonder is, how far will they fall in terms of price?

As the 996 Porsche 911 glow-up continues to gain steam, more and more of them are coming out of the woodwork at eyebrow raising prices. I still think the black sheep of the 911 family is going to stay that, but they just won’t be as cheap as they once were. Worth it? That is up to you of course, but I think a lot of these prices are reflective of people getting priced out of other 911s, simply grabbing what they can afford, and making the best of it.

Today, we have a 2002 Carrera 2 up for sale in New York with just 18,000 miles. Despite being just the base model, it was a not cheap at all. This one rang in at an impressive $96,810 when new, which was crazy to justify given the Turbo started at $110,000. Still, it is just the base 996 at the end of the day. How pricey could it be? Buckle up!

Hard to believe we are here, or maybe not, but the best of the best 996 Porsche 911 Turbos are transacting for over $100,000. I suppose it was inevitable as rising tides lift all boats, but I didn’t see it coming this fast. Keep in mind I’m talking about the standard 996 Turbo, not the GT2 or GT3, as those are already well into their own categories of crazy growth. Still, would you take this over a classic 930 Turbo? I’m not sure.

1992 Porsche 944 S2 Coupe

In terms of pure value for money with the Porsche brand, the 944 S2 is way up there if you are hunting for a car that doesn’t cost $60,000. A half-decent coupe can still be acquired for $15,000, and the cabriolets are even a little cheaper. Even though these cars are going on 30 years old, they certainly aren’t slow. A healthy example can still put down a 0-60 time in 6.2 seconds, and even more surprisingly the can muster up a top speed of 150 mph. Yes, the maintenance can be pricey, especially when it comes to the timing belt service, but you wanted a Porsche, right?

Today, we are looking at a 1992 944 S2 coupe up for sale in Norwich, England, although I’m scratching my head at the model year. My understanding is that the production was done for all 944 models in 1991, so it’s likely this dealer is going by the registration date rather than the production date. Whatever the case, it is finished in the very rare color of Maritime Blue and has a matching shade of blue on the inside as well. What’s not to like?
